The Complete Price Guide to Watches (Shugart, Engel and Gilbert)

I have two copies of the "Complete Price Guide to Watches" one dates 1999 and one 2011.

These US books are like Glass's Car Guide, and do the same thing as Glass's but for watches with values for condition, average, extra fine, mint.

    For few example (mint)

A 1969 Omega Speedmaster Pro (Moon Watch) was valued at $750 in 1999. In 2011 the same watch was valued at $1750

A Breitling 806 Navitimer SS was valued at $1400 in 1999. In 2011 the same watch was valued at $2300.

    A Submariner ref 5513 - $1600 (1999) and $4000 (2011)

    A Paul Newman Daytona SS ref 6241 - $12000 (1999) and $60000 (2011)

If anyone is interested in knowing whether their watch (needs to be pre 1999 ideally) is listed and the estimated values feel free to post and I will try to respond.

The book also included pocket watches and some clocks if you have anything of interest.

Please note this is just a bit of fun and not intended as a platform for folks to discuss the increases in the vintage watch market. There are other threads for this.

    Information required.

    Reference if you know it
    Year (if known)
Metal type used (gold, stainless steel, etc)
Does it have a bracelet or strap.
    A picture would be good.

    Many thanks.

    I've got a copy of the 10th (1990) edition.

    Your examples :

Rolex Daytona (non-screw down crown and pushers) - $2500

    Plus

    Rolex GMT Master II $800
    PP Nautilus $2200
IWC Royal Navy Mk X $600
    Rolex Luminor Panerai $3500

These books often get the values badly wrong.

    IWC Royal Navy Mk X $600 - $600 (1999) - $1500 (2011) - so no increase between 1990 and 1999!
    Rolex Luminor Panerai $3500 - $2600 (1999) - $35000 (2011)
    For completeness

1999 would have been a good year to by an early Panerai - assuming one actually came up for sale.

In the pre-internet era these guides were more relevent, but some of the valuationscwere always open to question! The guide was based on USA prices, in the mid-90s the price differences from country to country were more significant.

I have a couple frm the late 90s, they provd to be more interesting than useful.

In one book, they made up names for Bulova vintage watches if they didn't know them.

In 1997 and long before I had the slightest clue about watches, I bought a Breitling Intruder tax free in the Caribbean for about $650. Stupidly, I didn’t like mechanical movements at the time and I recall a mate bought a Breitling Colt which was a tad more expensive. Even despite my ignorance, I would have jumped at getting a submariner for about the same price.

I remember seeing the Intruder in the UK at Beaverbrooks or similar for £1000 at the time.

Hi, no mention of the Intruder, sorry.

Oh sorry, I would’ve been surprised if there were. It was one of Breitling’s dead ends.
