Where to sell a number plate

I've started looking into this and the amount of online companies saying they're the best is ridiculous. Can anyone recommend a good tried and tested company for selling a plate?

    Cheers

Most are useless imo and give a “valuation” of X which in reality means they’ll advertise it for 3X on the offchance someone will buy which is very unlikely at the multiplied price.

Only company I’ve had genuine prices from i.e. near a private sale price is Elite Registrations and quite honestly that has only happened on 4 or 5 character dateless plates which have a high chance of selling.

Seriously suggest you try SC or eBay but you have to take a realistic view and not say “valued at £xxx so I’ll accept valuation less 10%”.

Timing is everything when buying and selling number plates.

I have two, one for my wife and a cheaper one for myself.

I bought a plate for my wife as a 20th wedding aniversary pressie back in 1991 and paid £4,200 for it. It was SUE ***. I bought when the market was booming and good quality plates sold within days and haggling was pointless.

About 20 years later, someone left a message on the windscreen explaining that he was a private buyer and he would like to buy the plate. To cut a long story short, he offered £10k.

I contacted Elite Registrations who offered me £12,750 for an immediate sale. Presumably they would re sell at a higher price.

My wife said not to sell and we still have it today.

Today, 26 years after the initial purchase, the price is now only around £4K due to a flat market.

    So get your timing right.

Bought and sold a few and ebay however much i dislike like it was always better than the so called expert companies.

Prices now are low due to DVLA issuing numerous so called private plates by the thousands.

    It's X17 MAA

I've already fallen into the trap of believing an online valuation and will likely just put it on eBay

    From an earlier thread -

My ex wife bought me the plate as we got married on the 17th and the MAA is my initials.

In terms of the valuation (£550 valuation, £450 asking price) it came from the web company 'National Numbers'. In hindsight I'm thinking they may be over valuing it to encourage me to sell through them so I am happy to listen to offers

I don't see a high value on that, as I've found out with mine: LU57 FUL not even a cheeky offer - and it's a whole word!

Can't imagine there's any value in that really, but I could be wrong. Ebay is the best bet I think.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. It'll be going on the bay tonight and I'm expecting very little for it. Will probably start it at £50

Might be better off giving it back to your ex wife, save on ebay fees!!!!!!

Assume your talking about regtransfers etc, some of their prices are laughable!

Haha that would be sweet on something svelte, surprised it hasn’t sold at your asking let alone less!

I guess Joe Public generally miss the playfulness of plates.

X13 and X20 are both on DVLA at £499 all-in.

Unfortunately there’s little demand for prefix numbers, I managed just £250 each for M5 DVM and S55 DVM on eBay and they have some car connection (BMW/Subaru).

    Good luck
