Audio recording of the last minute of WWI, now 100 yrs ago

Don't know if it's posted here already.
The Imperial War Museum has released an audio recording (!) of the last minute of WWI on 11/11/18.

Metro says: eerie. I can't think of any other word.

I found out recently that the last British soldier died at 10.58 on Armistice Day .
Along with 3500 Americans who hadn’t been informed of the deal by their sceptical leaders .
    Terrible waste of life .

    Poignant.

I am currently on part 6 of this Dan Carlin epic about The Great War.

Amazing if you have the time and place to listen.

That short recording is so moving.
The bird that started tweeting a little while after the ceasefire - how beautiful and what a contrast.

Never ceases to amaze me does WW1. We went to the Somme last week to film some drone footage for a school Remembrance event and to give students further insight.

Here it is, music was a sticking point but it is what it is.

Amazing! Worth its own threat! No, more than that: this is one of moments I would suggest to send it to a newspaper. It's SO good, it's worth to go 'viral'!

Plenty of 4k drone footage that we used to compile the video. We've tried various media outlets but no takers.

Incredible how it just fades away then stops. 4 years of fighting finishing like that.

I cam across this the other day. A graphical day by day record of French fatalities.

    https://www.lefigaro.fr/fig-data/tombes-champ-honneur/

Its quite something, really highlights how static it all was.

I saw this on the BBC yesterday, very poignant. What you're hearing isn't an audio recording of the sound created by the guns, it's an interpretation of that sound recreated from the last remaining piece of "sound ranging" tape. The Smithsonian explains it better than me.

It just brings home the pointlessness of it all, the last tommy was killed 90 mins before the 11am armistice but the last soldier to die was an American killed at 10.59am, the order to cease firing was telegraphed to the signal huts along the lines at 10.00am on the 11/11/18.

There is also The Great War https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUc...PEDf69RRVhRh4A on Youtube. They've just completed a review of each week of WWI starting into 2014 100 years from the start through to 2018 which is a pretty big undertaking. I believe they recently started a WWII equivalent.

Going fron gunfire to silence to birdsong is very moving indeed.

Thanks for posting, I felt quite emotional listening to that.

Thank you OP. From the link to the Metro that you posted I followed another to a post...link...that explains the work behind their recreation.

The latter includes "The birdsong is a modern sound effect, and was added to emphasise the silence after the guns stopped firing."

Plus, I'd never heard of the Chinese Labour Corps...had you? See IWM link and Wiki. I knew about the stalwart efforts of the Chinese laundrymen on Royal Navy vessels (link) but never guessed that the Army had anything like it.

Given what's gone on since WW I...will we ever learn?
