6000 GBP and not a Submariner

Now that a boxless, unserviced, mass produced, 15 year old, unremarkable steel Rolex can command 5.5k - 6k I thought it would be interesting to see what else was available for that kind of outlay?

    New or second hand.

I'd go with the boxed IWC Ingenieur on the SC for 3k and a steel JLC Master Control for 3k give or take. All bases covered.

    Note: I own a sub so I'm not a 'hater' (🤢)

A Tudor 58 and Tudor GMT for that budget.

  3. #3
I'd vote for BB58 too. Or Omega Speedmaster with sapphire sandwich.

Seiko SLA025 can be had new out of Thailand for £3,500 and a Speedy pro can be had new for £2,500

Quite like the look of a JLC Master Compressor Navy Seals myself

Tudor BB58 and keep the change, or add a Pelagos.

    A Speedmaster Professional, a 2254, an X-33 Gen. 2, a PRS-29AM and a G-Shock and still have change for a nice meal out.

It’s a good point (and I also say that as a Submariner owner).

Pondering cashing-in a few watches to consolidate towards an Explorer II 16570, I realised that it wouldn’t be worth it to lose my Tudor Black Bay, Grand Seiko 9F Quartz & some other(s) in order to do so – they all have their own especial virtues, so losing three in return for just one makes little sense.

So I guess that I’d plump for a Tudor Black Bay, Grand Seiko 9F & second-hand Speedmaster over a single Submariner.

That said, I’ve kind-of already ignored my own advice by buying the Sub in the first place, but some things just have to be done, don’t they?

Would have to be a Speedy and an Areospace Evo for me with change left over.

Despite all the suggestions, I would still go for the Sub.

If I had that sort of dosh, this would be my choice - a lovely thing and a smidgen under 40mm.

If two sub-Subs doesn't seem an exciting way of complementing a Sub, how about something smaller (and sadly rather less submersible)

Model ref is 42052, size 37mm

I'd go for a Speedy Pro, BB58 and Longines Legend Diver. I think that would be do-able for 6k, just.

Modify my original post and substitute ‘Submariner’ for ‘5167’ and ‘6k’ for ‘25k’. There are a limited stock of people, even on a watch forum, who’d sit 25k in one watch - including me. Particularly one so utterly vanilla.

£6000 is a long way toward something truly special; after more saving, my choice would be a Sea Dweller 43 or an older gold Daytona. Fewer, better, watches is a decent approach . You can only wear one at a time.

The Submariner in all its recent incarnations leaves me utterly cold. I've tried; I just find it bland. The argument about it being a classic design doesn't sway me particularly either as that in itself doesn't prove inherent aesthetic value; just mass appeal.

As others have mentioned already there seems to be a sweet spot around the £2-3k mark, and owning both a BB58 and a sub I can't honestly say that one is (at least) twice the watch the other is.

To my eyes that sub looks at least twice as good as the BB. The average Joe on the street (in the office) will think the Tudor is a Sub copy worth £50

I agree having owned two subs, one ceramic and one pre ceramic.
I don't like the speedy or Tudor alternatives but love the SD43mm and if one comes up at RRP I would find the extra cash in a heartbeat.

So the best alternative to a overpriced 6k submariner is a 10k, bigger but fundamentally pretty much the same, Sea Dweller?

I've just sold a sub 16610. I loved it when I bought it and it was my first Rolex. But after 7 years of ownership I just got bored.

I picked up my El primero or GMT Master much more often than the submariner.

Why not go for a GMT? The flash of colour from the pepsi makes a big difference imo

From the pictures I prefer the looks of the black bay. As for the average Joe who cares. I liked the look and feel of the bay that much i purchased one last week.
Red bezel with metal bracelet. It is one of the least expensive watches I have but certainty the very best value for money. Still like the Rolex GMT Pepsi though.
Could be my next buy ( after titanium seamaster )

I have to agree as well. Finally picked up my SD43 and it really is something else. If one can be picked up anywhere near RRp and you can ‘spare’ the cash then go for it as I cannot believe it would disappoint.

Have been thinking along similar lines as the OP as to what is purchaseable given what has happened to vintage Rolex prices. It’s almost possible (not quite but the gap is narrowing) to sell a red sub and pick up a new gold sub !

Gotta love my new sub - being a tight Yorkshireman the fact depreciation is virtually non- existent helped my decision making

Two watches for me- a Black bay 58 or Planet Ocean 42mm 2500/8500 and a Zenith Chronomaster El Primero 36'000 VPH Automatic or a IWC Portuguese chrono.

I would have thought that 6k will bring some rather nice JLC's into play.

There was a time I loved these over Rolex, I still do really like the GS but a 16600 is top of my list next.

I’m not a Sub owner, but I do have a GMT-II on my wrist that I purchased when it was less than a month’s salary, rather than secondhand car territory (and would really struggle to justify buying these days).

There’s an awful lot that could be had for 6-6.5k, and I’m certainly interested in what else passes muster as classic, dependable and what passes for “value for money” in this hobby of ours :)

My collection runs to about 6k and I’d love a few things distinctly middle-of-the-road-but-solid to augment it.

My suggestion would be (perhaps a touch over budget):

    - Vintage Rolex Oysterdate (~£1.5k)
    - Omega Speedmaster (3.5k)
    - Nomos Tagente (1.8k)

    Else:

    - Vintage Rolex Oysterdate (~1.5k)
    - Sinn 756 (£1.8k) or the Speedy (3.5k)
    - Seiko Samurai (£320)
    - 3 weeks in India (~1k), probably just taking the Samurai, else add £20 for a beater Casio.

There are endless permutations, and I’d love to throw in some JLC or something more interesting.

So Joe in the office dictates your opinion?

I can't in any way dispute something seen through your eyes as opposed to through mine, but your opinion in this post seems to come from a strange place.

The average Joe on the street tends to see a Sub as a Sub copy worth £50...

But not the reissue ploprof. I think it was a thing of its time. Shamed somewhat by the seadweller pound for pound... but even more so in its modern incarnation.

Why not a used “new style” Rollie OP or 1st gen Pelagos which in time increases in value or 2 or 3 micro’s?

Own both an Ingenieur and a sub, clearly, IWC is, at least a esthetically, a superior watch with less great marketing though.

It seems that 'increase in value' and 'a good investment' have become the staples of Watch buying, before the recent spike in prices I'm fairly sure this wasn't the case.

No - the fact I have a Kermit dictates that I think it looks twice as good as the BB ;)

    This...

Or a better new one from £7,800 from Official Watches.

I love them as they are so understated, but these things tend to depend on whether one wants to impress others or oneself.

My current watch collection is around £6k.. The Rolex Explorer 1, and Citizen Chronomaster.

Chronomaster for everyday comfort and perpetual calendar so true grab and go, and Explorer is quick to set for more formal occasions.
