Keys fell down windscreen vent - Peugeot 3008

    Chaps,

After 9 hours behind the wheel coming home from France, in the last 10 minutes my keys fell out of the tray on my dash and gently plopped down demist vent on the drivers side.

Wife got a hand to it but alas couldn’t hold on.

I’ve had a magnet on a string down there to no avail.

Any ideas how I can get these back without the dash coming off?

Can they fall out onto the road?

    Thanks,
    Martin.

Coathanger uncoiled and bent straight, with a hook at the end?

Bent paperclip instead of magnet on a string?

One of these? Has an extendible grabber on the end.

    Take the demist vent out.
If you use a wide flat tool such as a butter knife or spatula and gently work it between the dash and vent edge, then you cab pottery the vent out.
It will pop back in after and seals on a foam gasket.
No change of them ending up on the floor - inner and outer body are sealed.

I remember the good old days when the key was safely plugged into the ignition keyhole.

We have 2 cars - one with a traditional key and handbrake, one with an electronic fob and big start button and a button instead of a handbrake. Guess which items are fitted to our ‘luxury’ car and guess which set-up my wife and I prefer! Sometimes fancier really isn’t better - in fact it can be a downright pita!

Add an endoscope to that and you've got a perfect combination, one I've used many times around the house and garage.

Ordinarily I'd 100% agree with you, but my current car has both a starter button & keyless entry (both a new novelty to me), so my keys never even have to leave the ultimate safety of my trouser pocket.

That said, I'm generally cynical about over-engineered/over-complicated things, so we'll see how long it lasts until something breaks (the spare key already needs a battery replacing and is consequently iffy in performance). Modern technology is great when it works, but oftentimes simplicity really is best.

    Thanks all.

It was my door keys that went down.

    Bendy magnet thing delivered today.

About to have a probe about.

    Cheers,
    Martin

This - you'll start dropping things down air vents just for the fun of it.
