Question Who's on here from British Blades then?

So i know a few people on here who used to frequent the very British forum of all things pointy and sharp aka British Blades, but i wondered if I could get a roll call as interested to know who's still around and say hi, now that BB is no more :(

I notice for example that Rapidboy hasn't posted in quite a while, but that Saint Just is around as is easilyled (with a different TZ name).

As they say, its just for fun and out of curiosity.

Is that a forum for young "blades", as in dapper young dandies and their society antics?

    If so, I am envious!

I've included a few definitions from the OED here to help members identify if they meet the criteria:

Blade - A dashing or energetic young man.
‘the director, a young blade in an oversized suit’

‘Our guide, Thomas, is an enthusiastic young blade.’

    • ‘It isn't hard to see why the makers of the upcoming film chose to cast him as the spoilt young blade.’
    • ‘In the nightclubs of wartime London, young blades trying to impress their girlfriends would turn up sometimes wearing German uniforms.’
    • ‘I should mention that we young blades came from the north side of the bog, a distance of more than two miles.’
    • ‘They were triumphant and he felt like a dashing young blade in football.’

So clever my foot fell off.

Looks like one definition and a few examples of use to me, but perhaps there are a few definitions of definition.

Me too. Different handle, as Spydienut was taken :).

I hadn’t posted on there for a while, but sorry to hear it’s no more.

Any similar forums out there for enthusiasts of all things edged?

As many above were and as i am on here, another infrequent poster. Made a few blades along the way and enjoyed buying many more

Yes, I was on there. Built up quite a collection of EDC folders that I make precisely no use of whatsoever ... really should see about how to move some of them on.

Also got some kitchen knives made through makers on there.

Also very sad to see it go.

EDGE MATTERS would be my suggestion, I'm registered but am not active. Was recommended to me by ex BB mods and mates.

I believe you can sell legal knives on here and must abide by relevant selling regulations.

Otherwise there are several groups on facebook where you can sell too. I want to shift a chunk of my collection as i dont use them and sadly need the money right now :(

I was there, shame it ended for whatever reason. Maybe it was more in vogue back in the day, as it seems no other U.K. based site has been able to compare on the same scale.

Yep, I on there for a good while. Same as here really, window shopped a lot but not much to say.

To paraphrase from a thread on edgematters which some of the ex-moderators contributed to, Martyn, the owner became unable to maintain the site and he was the only person authorised to interact with the hosting company. He was unwilling or unable to delegate that authority to any of the moderation team.

It makes you wonder how many other forums founded by a single person or linked to a business have a single point of failure. Although you might argue much of it is trivia, the loss of information and relationships that followed are sad. I wonder if anyone has studied the failure or closure an internet forum.

For example, I wonder what the situation would be here at TZ and at other forums I post on if anything similar were to happen to the owners.

The important difference with many places to BB, is that Martyn was by all accounts a total bell-end.

Very good points raised. Without a doubt the loss of information and relationships on BB was a big loss to the knifemaking / collector / enthusiast community.
Was BB a failure? I don’t believe it was. As previously mentioned it was major a resource of info, advice and a very popular marketplace for the sale/trade of custom knives . Since BB ended there was a lot of speculation over Martyn’s health and reasons for its closure. Although a loss, as Martyn was the forum owner it was his choice/right to pull the plug.

Definitely not a fanboy here but, the few dealings I had with Martyn were good. And there seems a lot of irony in that comment when you observe what’s going on at other knife related forums.

I didn't mean it was a failure at the time. I meant it has now failed, kaput, etc.

Spent more time (and money) that I like to admit on BB before its untimely demise. And more recently on Edgematters.

I thought sharp things were expensive....... until I started looking at watches!

I was an infrequent poster on there (as I am here...) under a different username. I signed up for EdgeMatters but it doesn't seem the same.

I began to find all the UK based shooting and knife forums rather depressing places to be with the new law looming....

I was on BB, I'm on Edge matters too, Same username

I won a Taylors Eye Witness Barlow made by Russel at a BB meet up here in Sheffield at the fat cat..

A fella local to me had me pants down in a trade, I swapped a beautiful mk2 BSA Superstar and a Webley Hurricane for these, He said he was told that one of the Spiderco was a clone, Turned out they all were!!

I was supposed to be putting some knives together as i'd sourced antler, Cow and Ramshorn, Nice burr woods, Blades and other stuff needed but one of my sheds collapsed and the contents were crammed in to the garage where I was to do the work

I erected a new and larger shed, Stuck all the stuff back in but there was more somehow so I still couldn't get in!!

Recently dropped on this old Mammoth tooth at the bootsale, Was going to saw it up for scales but couldn't bring myself to do it!!

He made some great stuff; and seemed a great chap.

Shame the archive showing his work vanished when the lights went out a BB. Never understood why Martyn didn't just sell or gift the site on when he was unable or unwilling to continue.

    Sad.

Would like to see that - he did some nice carbon fibre stuff, as I recall, and I was smitten by a horse chestnut handled one if memory serves.......?

He was extremely unwell iirc, and thus his making took a back seat. I recall a post from someone reporting he was back making, but in what capacity I know not.

Very much rough and ready knives in my experience (though far far better than Michael May and Trevor Ablett) but luckily with a relatively low price so couldn't really expect too much.
