Thread: Rolex 1665 vs 16660

    Rolex 1665 vs 16660

I'd like to add another vintage Rolex to my collection. However, I am not sure which SD to choose. The DRSD is too expensive for me. It would have to be a Great White.

Or the second option is the 16660 with a Pallettoni dial.

What would you recommend? Especially in the current market. The prices are becoming crazy.

One more note. I usually wear my watches. At least once a week.

I have owned both and to be honest the 16660 is a bit to much like a 16600. If you really want the vintage feel and look then it has to be the 1665 complete with its Superdome.

I have a rail dial 1665 and it really is a joy to wear.

A matte dial 16660 is imho very different to the later dials and in itself quite a rare watch being available for not long before the dial changed

They are both lovely and have that warm vintage feel that comes with tritium 'non' surround dials

but nice as an early 16660 is I agree with Andy the 1665 is just that bit more special with plexi and dimensions and given prices are not too far apart I think 1665 GW is the way to go.

Its not the dial which makes a 16660 like a 16600, it's the flat sapphire crystal.

The crystal on the 1665 is domed plastic hence although unique is more similar to the 1680 and 5513.

    Nice watch BTW

Letting my 1665 go is my biggest watch selling regret and believe me, like many on here, Iíve got a LOT of watch selling regrets.

    Lovely.

I must say I do struggle to understand why some people are willing to shell out £15k on a new Ceramic Daytona or Pepsi GMT (especially the GMT) , when for similar money they can have one of the best watches Rolex every made, al be it 40 odd years ago.

It seems that 1665 is getting more votes. I'd love to have a Rail Dial, however, the prices are becoming crazy. Mondani has just sold one for 30k EUR.

I searched for what seamed like an eternity and came across the one pictured. Full set, serviced even had the shop receipt from the original buyer

Nice one, the bezel insert seems to be a service part. Am I right?

But Iím loathed to fit it as I like the faded blue and vanilla pip of the insert installed

This is a very nice piece. Congrats! The bezel insert and the date circle seem to be original, right?

I know that the market is really like that. Just comparing where is was about two years ago. That's what is ridiculous, the pace of the increase.

Slapping the word COMEX onto the dial doesn't do it for me I must admit.
Takes the eyes away from the rest of the lovely dial.

In what way do you think it improves the dial?

I enjoy reading about the COMEX history and diving backgrounds and would welcome one in my collection.

Agree regards the history but just not the aesthetics.
