Thread: Bloodhound SSC in administration

It's interesting to read that these first runs are more about how to slow it down safely rather than all about getting the vehicle up to speed, it certainly adds a dimension to the project that I hadn't even considered.

All sorts of stability tests etc, see profiles.

    Update See also RUN REPORT – RUN 29 (HST 8) – 6 NOV 19.

Reading that and their other reports I gather that they are running from NW to SE at Hakskeen Pan.

Some of the history behind their choice of location is here.

Ian Warhurst expected to get a big sponsor on board who would stump up the majority of the cash.
I think he’s been surprised that not a single company has been interested.

Fair play to him for putting his money in to keep the project going. I can fully see why he doesn’t want to bankrupt himself though.

    Hopefully funding will arrive.

It’s a shame but I can’t see a lot of spare cash sloshing about this year

No idea, doubt that's why others here are keen on seeing it succeed.

More likely a spurious reason to justify the project.

It is an endeavour that challenges what has gone before using the best of simulation, materials and engineering expertise which will have many spin off's over time.

Stop being so negative and short sighted.

    Of course it will.

What's gone on before isn't very different anyway.

I doubt this forum is populated by the intended demographic..

Might as well just shut down the ISS, Mars rover while we're at it. Space telescopes? What a waste of money, not like we can do anything about the asteroids we see heading towards earth.

Of course - motor vehicles haven't changed since they were invented either.

If you think so, but I think those other projects are certainly worth pursuing.

This car is just (trying to go) a bit faster than a similar one.

To be fair, the point being made is that pursuing a goal to beat 1228 km/h by another 60km/h is not exactly going to change anything in terms of human endeavour or technology. It will just get the team a new world record.

I am not suggesting it makes it unworthy, just that maybe he should manage to get funding without begging from the media platform he is given.

The technological and dynamic challenges to achieve what they are aiming for is significant and not to be dismissed lightly.

The original goal of Bloodhound was to reach 1,000mph (1,609km/h) which would have been quite a leap.

I am sure I am underestimating the challenges but that’s part of the deal about getting funding. Aiming for 1000 mph is a major step. Aiming for an extra 50 mph is just adding a booster rocket to the existing record holder.

Well, if Bugatti's cost and development to push another few mph out of the series of Veyron variants is anything to go by then it's probably a bit more involved than that, but I understand the analogy.

The law of diminishing returns is both involved and expensive.

The difference being that VW can afford funding it and the public (well, a very limited fraction of the public) can actually buy it.
As it is, it appears to be about attaching 4 wheels and a jet engine to a rocket and firing the damned thing one way, then the other.

I am playing devil’s advocate as I know it’s a lot more complex but the finality isn’t exactly different. And he hasn’t been able to secure funding, which also means he hasn’t been able to a) define the budget realistically and b) keep the original on board to add what was missing.

To me, that is the appeal. In that there is far more to it than just sticking a rocket on the existing car. Else you'd then just stick two, three, four. At those speeds thrust becomes a minor variable. That's when new bearings, lubricants, tyre materials, coolant systems and all that lot get developed. A whole lot comes out of such endeavors, beyond a simple speed record.

Using two of those Typhoon EJ200 engines, Eurofighter have managed to routinely achieve 1534 mph.

Ok, it’s in the air, but would it be a major technical achievement to get it to do 1600 mph?

Most people would probably think not, and I think a lot of investors are probably wondering about the relevance of a project that aims to break a land speed record.

I get the STEM thing, but I think they’d have more funding success if they were basing it all around more sustainable technologies.

Either that, or I believe the flat earthers have some funding going spare after the termination of a recent programme...
