BBC news has more on the story.

    Brilliant! Absolute genius!
So clever my foot fell off.

Love the fact theres now an argument as to whether it’s now increased or decreased the value of the piece! Brilliant - raised a smile in these all too serious times..

Wonderful stunt. I would be interested to know who the seller and buyer was. I doubt Sotheby's were impressed as it might have cost them over £150k.

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

The whole story raises some questions. Like:
    - how was the action (destruction) set in motion right after the sale (Banksy is known not to be a fan of the inner circle of art buyers)
    - surely, after handling countless amounts of paintings, the auction-people must have noticed that there was something going on: the must have been an additional weight as a result of the built-in mechanics.
    - was Banksy in the room to set the shredding into action?
    - ...

The BBC article raises some questions as well!

It is however, a great moment in art history!

It certainly does beg the question of whether Sotheby's were in on it...

The frame was essentially an upside down shredder with a viewing pane that would've required a power source; mains or battery, and the capability of receiving a remote signal (I would suggest over a mobile network).

With that said, I would be extremely surprised if Sotheby's didn't inspect such pieces prior to sale.

Brilliant stunt whatever the truth of the matter, even the expression on the girls face is whimsical compared to the print, £1.1m destroyed.

I suspect Sotheby’s were aware . Its unlikely it wasn’t examined thoroughly before sale.

I wouldn’t call it a stunt : its probsbly more of a performance Art in itself. And it was fun . I doubtbitbwas a real auction but if it was I suspect the imfamy would have maybe doubled the auction price by now even in its shredded state

I think it wasn’t a cross cut shredder for a reason.

Nice PR stunt, the whole Banksy thing is novel but the mystique behind it is simply the art world generating cash.

Agreed, they are almost as bad as Rolex, on the plus side my Banksys have probably gone up in value by 10%.

Exactly, complete stunt to increase the subsequent value, very innovative though.

My brother almost sold one of his choose your weapons for 4.5k in January 2011. He's glad the eBay sale fell through and he didn't get around to relisting it..

Dont. Please just don't. I sold my Golf Sale print a few years back because I'd got a little bored with it and wanted to buy one of those fancy new flat screen tvs. I got around 800 - 900 in the end - less than the auctioneers actually made on it if you factor in the buyers' premium.

    Unsigned?

Choose your weapon has gone from 4.5k in Jan 2011 to probably 45k today

If you're struggling to collect Rolex, spare a thought for the banksy collector!

Yes it was unsigned. Had the 'Pictures on Walls' authentication. Not as big a jump in value as the one you mentioned though!

The more Banksy tries to be anti establishment, the more he is revered by the establishment, this stunt has just made this piece worth much more than the buyer paid, it reminds me of the Bill Hicks statement on marketing. Video NSFW.

Looks like a modern analogy of what will happen to Britain if Corbyn gets in

I live in Bristol, so see a lot of his stuff and also stuff he's influenced, he is a genius at this stuff, but as per the previous comment, the establishment around art is so bad, no matter what he does it just gets taken in even more, his message is just missed even more with the likes of this.

Goes with Tracey Emins bed and the emperors new cloths, is it art, or will “that” pay for anything

I don't even think these two artists should be in the same sentence, Emins 'bed' was just someone who tries to be controversial being controversial and was derided for that, and being just totally lazy and made news due to the negativity around it. Banksy put a bit of thought and effort into what he did, and did what nobody had really seen before, which made the news for the positive aspects.

As much as i don't tend to care about any of this stuff though, i can remember several Banksy works, Dismaland, his New York stunt, the Israeli wall and a few others, and they do have an impact compared to an unmade bed, or a dead sheep.

I’ve just come back from the Mocomuseum in Amsterdam, they are currently showing the first ever formal Banksy exhibition, along with Icy&Sot, Warhol and Dali.

    Well worth the entrance fee

I was there on Saturday. Very thought provoking, which, I suppose is the whole idea.

That was my take away from the exhibition too. He might be anti establishment / poverty / police state and present that in a confrontational manner. But, there is a lot of truth in his art
