People whose hand you'd happily shake!!!

It occurred to me this morning on a six-mile hike that my latest post ("slapping" Julian Assange) was contributing to overall negativity within the community. I have been a frequent contributor to that thread, mostly to elicit a laugh, but nevertheless...

I know that TZ-UK members are also POSITIVE players in the world around them, so I thought I would initiate an 'opposite' thread, for positive-minded members to call out people in the world community whom they would especially like to acknowledge.

TO ENSURE THAT THIS THREAD MAINTAINS A POSITIVE FOCUS, I SUGGEST NO ARGUING AND NO CHALLENGING OF ANOTHER MEMBER'S SELECTION.

With these thoughts in mind, I would definitely like to shake the hand of U.S. Senator Jeff Flake, whose heart and conscience forced him to courageously break ranks with his party's leadership, and demand that an FBI investigation into claims against Judge Brett Kavanaugh be conducted. My hat is off to you, Senator!

Happy to oblige. Although I do enjoy the happy to slap thread too.

My first entry here is Ben Fogle. Who I had always thought of as a bit of a reality TV non-entity. I then watched his programme in which he climbed Mount Everest. Anyone who can endure that challenge is alright in my book. Respect.

It's worth highlighting that he is retiring, so is not really standing up to much. If only those who were seeking reelection took a similar stand...

That being said, he'd also be my choice for the past week!

    Louis van Gaal. No doubt.

Here the imitation of Dessaily's kick against Jari Litmanen.

Van Gaal is often criticised in the press. Has to do with his attitude against 'journalistic stupidity' ("Are you so dumb or am I just smart?"). What's not known is the fact that especially young players talk very respectfully about him. There's a very kind and generous man behind the angry-face mask.

Years ago, a colleague and his kids lost his wife / their mother as a result of breast cancer. During the summer, dad and his two kids went to the North Sea coast for a day out - exactly on the birthday of his wife/ their mother. When they sat down for a drink, they noticed that Van Gaal and his wife sat at a table next to them. The kids asked him for an autograph (no cell phones back then). They started talking and the kids told them about their mom. According to my colleague, he felt sorry for the kids and asked them where they lived. Until this day (20+ yrs on!), Van Gaal sends a card or a letter on their mom's birthday with a friendly and encouraging text. That's not the Van Gaal the journalists show us!

Well, the fact that we may mention politicians doesn’t equate to discussing politics. I find it a rather positive thing that we can find good things to say about some of them.
I will therefore nominate someone who doesn’t represent my values. At all.
Emmanuel Macron finally recognised the responsibility of the French military in the death of a young Algerian mathematician, Maurice Audin, when he apologised to his widow.
It is extremely significant because he died after being tortured so it is an essential step in the duty of memory that France owes to its former colony.
It should have been done years and years ago. It was public knowledge. It was even taught at school. Now it’s official.

You forgot the ultimate trial. Putting up with Victoria Pendleton!

(She has my admiration and I watched her battles on the track absolutely gripped but my flatmate who worked for British cycling at the time said she was a right drama queen/whinger)

Jimmy Carter - We need more true Statesmen (and women) like him.
Stirling Moss - For excelling with honour and for that Mille Miglia victory
Mike Oldfield - For producing music that has enriched me, healed me and touched my soul.

None of us is perfect - - including the Roman Catholic Pope. In fact, there is evidence than numerous past Popes have been complicit in humanitarian crimes committed by world leaders, as well as members of their own Church. That said, I believe Pope Francis has gone FAR beyond any previous Pope in correcting Church 'irregularities' and attempting to be a force for peace, love, and goodness in the world.

I would very much like to shake his hand to thank him and encourage him to keep pushing the envelope outward, both within the Catholic Church and the World Order.

Any burial you could reverse with a shovel would be a pretty shoddy one though I guess in some parts of the world sand is all they have to work with.

It was just recreational pedantry really. Sorry OP for the diversion.

Until his passing, it would have been Sir Nicholas Winton. The irony being, he was in a nursing home less than 10 miles away from me and I never bothered. Regret that.

Two or three years ago I nipped over to Goodwood to have a look at a classic car track day. I parked my old banger in the paddock next to an Austin-Healey, the owner guided me into the space and was immediately engaged in conversation by someone else so I had a quick look at his car (a really nice and original 100S) and wandered off. I was back 15 minutes later to have a chat with him but the car and owner had apparently packed up for the day. And you already know who it was. I was completely gutted, I've listened to his music since my dad bought the first album when I was very small and I still listen to it now.

    My hero since childhood:

    Sir Jackie Chan.

    Also:
Iain Banks ( for his imagination and amazingly intelligent writing style. But most importantly for coming up with the Socialist Anarchist Culture, where I wished I was),

Sir Isaac Newton, Einstein, Descartes, Euclid, Archimedes, Euler, Gauss, Ramanujan and James Clerk Maxwell. In no particular order, but all geniuses of the highest order and despite my daydreaming, I'll never be the equal of or meet.

Stephen Hawking and Sir Roger Penrose also.

Dennis Ritchie for developing the "C programming language."

Looks like except for JC and Sir Roger I wouldn't be able to ever shake hands with :(

I never met Hawking, but we had Roger Penrose round for lunch once years ago. Fascinating chap and I really enjoyed discussing virtual particles with him, as well as developments in superconducting.

Some figures from history, some have already been mentioned by previous posters i.e. Sir Isaac Newton, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks etc.

From people I've known, I'd love to go back and shake the hands of a few teachers that, looking back, were pivotal to my development.

Virginia Wade and "H" from Steps.

On a more serious note, anyone who flew with the RAF in WW2. Amazing men (and not forgetting the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary who had to be able to fly any of dozens of planes to make sure they were in teh right place when needed).

Was thinking about Sir Tim, but thought of how zombified a lot of us have become in it's present implementation/state.

Ken Thompson did "B" from a different programming language. Dennis built upon that with "C" and made it far more approachable etc. I believe Brian did say that Dennis did it solely and he had no input except co-authoring the seminal reference book with Dennis. I may be wrong, but I believe that is the gist of what I've read up on it.
