    Motorcycle Insurance

    In preparation for (hopefully) getting my bike licence and buying a new bike, I wanted to make sure the insurance cost was going to be 'reasonable' before going too much further.

    I ran a couple of comparison sites for my current favourite bike (BMW F750GS) and it came out with a starting price of just over £200, which seems very low - although I'm mid-50's with good car insurance history. The big-name brands (Carole Nash and Bennetts) were closer to £500. For these prices, I was selecting a low voluntary excess, no pillion and around 4000 annual miles.

    The surprising thing was that the comparison site came out with a bunch of insurance brands that I've never heard of, so I guess it's just a different specialism than car insurance?

    Anyway, any recommendations on this? Is it worth trying to combine car and bike into a single policy (although not sure my current car insurance company offers this)?

    I’m in a similar position and a little ahead of you having passed my DAS a couple weeks ago. I have just insured a new Bonneville T120 (1200cc) with 4K miles, pillion, garaged for £200. Carole Nash.

    I`m 51yrs old with maximum no claims discount, IAM advanced test, been riding for 30+ yrs . Currently riding a 2004 BMW R1150RT valued at £3500, unlimited mileage, SDP & business use, also volunteer rider for Blood Bikes. Bike is garaged with an approved Oxford disclock and a Meta cat3 alarm.
    Insured with Bennetts, I pay £134 fully comp, with RAC breakdown plus helmet/leathers covered.
    Look at spending a couple of quid on security and it can greatly reduce your insurance premiums. Hope this helps and good luck getting the licence.

    Another shout for Bemoto insurance - I’ve got all 4 of my bikes (400,750,900 & 1050cc) insured fully comp under a multi bike policy for just over £300. I’m no teenager mind at 46yrs old...

    I changed from Carole Nash with my two-bike policy, for a 54-year old Northerner with full no claims, bikes garaged overnight, 18-year old Honda Hornet 600 (<£1,000)+ 2014 MSX 125 (£2,000 value)
    I will look at BeMoto prices next year.

    Carole Nash £330
    Bennetts £221
    MCE = £221
    RAC = £172

    No breakdown cover or other extras - I opted out.
    But it does have protected no claims / business use / Fully comp

    Carole Nash said they could try to match the cheaper price - I said they were miles away, so if they could match a cheaper price - I would not deal with then anyway, for trying to rip me off by over £90.

    I'm on 8 years no claims and my Hayabusa cost 215 fully comp with LV=. They also insure my cars (Honda Type R also 215). First quote - Hastings
    - was around 550.

    Not bad for Hertfordshire I feel.

    Must admit, I'm pleasantly surprised by the relatively 'low' prices you guys are paying, and it certainly does not sound like it's going to be a huge cost - even for a green/grey rider like me!

    I'll definitely look into security products before I buy the insurance - but first I need to finally settle on which bike to get (and pass the test, of course).

    Carole Nash are thieves!

    They resisted 3 demands from me - to provide proof that the underwriters had assessed the risk higher and there was additional premium to pay - before having to admit it was a reduction in premium.

    They are also incompetent chimps. I would quite happily see every one of their ‘handlers’ out on the streets.

    If you have one bike - just go with one of the mainstream brokers (bikesure, Bennets etc)

    Or give a call to Cornmarket in Belfast - I find them very good for multi-bike

    Hastings are proving to be totally incompetent regarding a claim for the theft of the other half's bike. Can't send out even the most basic paperwork or call back, have fobbed us off to a claims company.

    I have my Harley insured with Carole Nash. Fully comp £227 for the year. They can be annoying sometimes but I can't be bothered with the shopping around lark.

    The Carol Nash 50% overcharge on £227 means that other providers will be able to get your fees down to £120ish for the same, or similar insurance cover.

    Just paid £130 for fully comp, with legal, pillion, ride any bike, helmet and leather and breakdown (RAC) from Bennett’s for my R1200gs. That’s with full no claims, and I’m 43.

    For comparison I pay £500 multicar for an A6 avant and an M3 SDP and business.

    And of course, it's at the sharp end of the insurance process where it really counts. I had a negative experience with Hastings a few years ago with a claim for my daughter's car, so they are already crossed off my mental list of possibles. Thanks for the feedback.

    My car insurance is about £240, so hopefully, I'll be able to get a decent bike insurance for a similar amount (bearing in mind my total lack of bike experience/no claims) - which is quite a bit less than I was expecting, to be honest.

    I used Aviva insurance. Its a pain as the motorcycle bit is phone based, but they were the cheapest to insure my bike on a London street.

    Once this claim is settled I certainly won't be renewing with them!

    What multibike providers do the forum recommend?

    Motorcycle Direct Thornbury, good premiums but I've not made a claim with them.
