Odd question.......I`m out of this one before I get in

I have my own preferences, I could spend time trying to justify them, but at the end of the day it's all down to individual preference.

I`ll spin this question round on the OP.....which do YOU prefer and why?

Oh dear!!! Best not to call a longtime member 'pal' & you could do a little research of the place to help yourself out.
Your title I find a little confusing, i.e. 'What is your favourite watch' My favourite watch for the past couple of years is a Breitling Chronospace, modern, but now discontinued. You are asking about vintage Rolex, & Omega. now that's a narrow scope.
Should you not be asking....what is your favourite vintage Omega/Rolex.

    Why?

What are you hoping to do with that information?

Please excuse people’s puzzlement but it does seem a fairly vague and banal question.

What do you prefer - sweet or savoury?

We've all got to start somewhere, and it's an interesting question for those who have both.

I prefer vintage watches, and Rolex & Omega appeal for different reasons.

Rolex: Love the stepped dials of the early Day-Date and Datejust models. In my experience the 70s models still keep good time. Very conservative design means they don't look that different from the current models.

    Omega:
Much more variety and interesting designs on the vintage watches. Quality of the vintage stuff compared to the modern stuff is generally not as good.

Maybe you’re right, I dunno. But if I signed up to a frying pan forum and asked ‘what’s your favourite frying pan?’ I’d not expect to set the forum alight with debate.

    Le Creuset.
The obvious choice is the griddle but to be honest, for actual cooking ease, I'd plumb for the heavy bottomed iron pan every time. :)

Good question. I have both, although I actually bought my vintage Rolex new. My vintage Omega is a rather simple handwound. Of the two, I certainly value the Rolex - a 16750 GMT Master - more. Had a vintage Seamaster at one time and that was really nice, with one of those 'beads of rice' bracelets.

In general though I think vintage Rolexes are more interesting. To me, anyway.

Always been a 'sweet' sort of person, though I developed a strong fondness for cheese & onion rolls in my 30s. But I could never understand how anyone could prefer any savoury dish to an apple crumble, or a sherry trifle. Will be interested to see how others feel, though.

Hi Guys Reece is one of my Barbers a great lad and his enthusiasm for watches is incredible but needs a little taming.

He's like a kid in a candy stall and is mesmerized by all the shiny bingly bongly bits of our hobby.

I come to work everyday with a different watch on and he goes Gaga lol.

He comes from the bling world of watches but is slowly getting the taste for the finer things in life and needs a few pointers.

I've recommended TZ to him so don't throw him in the bear pit he's a great lad.

Reece has spent years listening to me waffling on about vintage and he's now turning the corner.

All the poor lad knows is what I tell him which is vintage Rolex and Omega with a light sifting of IWC calibre 89 I loose him then.

I've spent a whole week educating him on the difference between a 5513 and a 14060 and moved on to a 14060m

Two liner and Four liner done and next week we are working on maxi dials.

Oh and everyone is Reeces Pal lol

This is the clincher for me, I can get almost anything I like with Omega. They had digital watches, they had really interesting chronographs (including ones with the Lemania 5100), they had the PloProf - I like several classic Rolex designs a lot, but as a brand, I find them too averse to experimenting. If you asked whether I preferred vintage Omega or vintage Heuer, I'd have a much harder time deciding.

Omega because their back catalogue is much more diverse. That's possibly because Rolex hit the nail on the head with pretty much every model they brought out. Oddly enough I've never received a derogatory comment about an Omega but I have with Rolex.

Likewise - Omega's vintage output is far more interesting than Rolex's (Actually you could extend that into moderns, really, although I'm less enthusiastic about modern Omegas).

    What is your favourite watch

Thread title could have been more specific but such (so called) banal questions are asked all the time on here:-

    “Favourite watch brand?”
“All watches are 69p, what would you buy?” etc.

Personally, I don’t have great interest in those (or any) vintage watches but would probably choose Rolex as most Omega appear small and dressy (though I’m sure someone more knowledgable will contradict this).

I think the real confusion is the gap between the title and the thread itself.

My favourite watch is a Zenith El Primero Class Sport, but I have no opinion on vintage Rolex or Omega as I own neither.

Depends on the era and your definition of vintage but these are pushing half a century.

Omega's dress watches are small and dressy, while their sports watches are big and not. Likewise Rolexes dress watches are small and dressy, while their sports watches are big and not.

On another note, Rolex has Tudor for experiments with retro watches in the Heritage Chrono, Black Bay and probably others. Rolex as far as I can tell have added some red writing to the SD and that's about the only new nod to the past.

And in answer to the other question about Omega vs Heuer, as much as I like the latter and have a few of them they really are a one-trick pony. I've never been interested in their divers, they're not much more than Submariner clones, and while the chronos they did make really are lovely they're pretty much all two- and three-sub dial chronos. Plus a couple of digital watches. Over the last year or so my Omega collection has included iconic (and compared to Rolex, under-appreciated) divers like the PloProf and 1000M, chronographs like a 321 Speedy Pro, Mk2 racing and Flightmaster, electronic and quartz watches like the Beta 21, Marine Chronometer (and Stardust), Albatross/Montreal and 1040 Lemania-powered chronograph divers in the 176.005 (non-Jedi) and Big Blue. That's some serious firepower and all from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s. I also have a 2531.80, surely one of the best allrounders out there and a new and current titanium X33 Skywalker (designed for and worn by astronauts like Tim Peake).

Wowsers. I'm wearing my 911 right now but am really tempted by the 910, it's just I don't really like the flat case. I wonder if anyone's been able to fit the 910 dial, hands and domed crystal to a 911 case?!

Hi Reece, welcome to the forum.

I’d suggest looking into the history of the two companies. The founders, Louis Brandt and Hans Wisldorf, took different approaches. Arguably that is why Omega seem to have a more diverse and interesting range of vintage and modern watches whereas Rolex are more dominant today, with classic designs and the best mass produced simple movements.

You’ve got plenty of time to make your own mind up by the sound of it :).

I don’t have an Omega but I have several of a sister brand that appeal to me more than any Rolex design. I love some of the 30s and 40s Omegas. That said, I have a Rolex that I inherited that means more to me than just about anything I own.

I have a Le Creuset griddle pan but gave up using it years ago as I found everything sticks to it. Perhaps I didn't season it properly when I first got it?

To the OP: Perhaps my comments were a bit hasty. It's quite difficult answering a question that's so vague though. I'm sure you've already been told this, but if you're seriously considering buying vintage then you need to factor ownership costs in on top of the initial cost of the watch itself. Both of the brands you mentioned have their own challenges and pitfalls, more so since Omega resticted the supply of parts that Indie watchmakers used to have free access to.

For me, the Omega designs from the late 60's and early 70's are very hard to beat.

    And, wow :)

When wearing vintage Omega dress watches it feels like I am wearing my Dad's long service reward watch.

When wearing vintage Rolex dress watches it feels like I am wearing black sheep of the family Uncle Roger's stylish, ex fighter pilot and cad like watch given in appreciation by his adoring chums...

I decided to take a chance on this one - will post more about it when it arrives.

Its to replace a manual 285 movement one with a linen dial that I had to move on due to sentimental reasons

Aside from the dials on these 60's Seamaster's I really like the case backs

Vintage dress watches are what first sparked my interest and something I always end up coming back to

Not for me - I broke the knob off my Le Creuset lid and was shocked to find that a genuine replacement was 4 times the price of a generic (unbranded) alternative. Thank goodness that sort of mark up doesn’t happen in the watch world🤨

Back on topic, I agree with Gray’s sentiments - my Dad has an Omega dress watch, so the (ageing) teen rebel in me rules them out - speedie excepted probably.

Tried hard with this. Narrowed it down to about 20. Will give it more thought by which time I will have changed my mind.

That's usually the reason people give for keeping stuff, but then I checked: "of or prompted by feelings of tenderness, sadness, or nostalgia." So that's a shame. But I think the incoming looks like a cracker, and I hope it brings with it good tidings for you!

I have a 1970's Omega Seamaster which I've had since new and still love it. I'm not so keen on most of the modern Omega models other than the Railmaster. I have previously owned a Rolex Explorer 2 and a Date Just but, didn't really gel with either. The one watch I would love to own would be an Omega CK2129 pilots watch.

Now BadenH has vouched for Reece and explained the rationale behind the question maybe it’s worth some serious consideration

If I was looking at say a divers watch would I go Seamaster 300 (165.024 for example) over 5513 Sub? My heart says the Omega but my head says Rolex. I lusted after the 165.024 long before the 5513 came onto my radar.

If I wanted the date version of either I’d still say the heart draws me towards the Omega.

Switching to Chronographs: well I currently own three modern Speedies (Silver Snoopy and both Speedy Tuesdays) I’ve flipped a FOIS earlier this year. If I was contemplating a vintage one it’s the Omega again. Pre moon Speedy wins every time over a Paul Newman Daytona (ignoring the prices of any of them). In my opinion the old Newman is just ugly

So for me it’s vintage Omega from the 60’s. Roll forward a decade it’s more likely to be Rolex.
