Price guidance please - SS Rolex DateJust 1603

Hi

I'm thinking of selling my vintage SS DateJust 1603 on it's M stamped Oyster 78360 BCT. Very strong runner , no recent Service history though.

Serial dates it to approx 1974 , also comes with original papers too....sold in Anchorage , Alaska during June '76.



I'm thinking around £2850....does that seem reasonable ?

I am sure people with far more knowledge than I will be along soon but it sounds a little expensive to me, I would have thought more circa £2300 - 2500.

It is a very nice looking watch.

I'd have thought that it depends what you mean by running strong. I.e as someone just wearing it, or according to timegrapher.

That said, if running strong, then from the ones I've watched and seen sell, seems around 2k tends to be an common price. Can't comment on the value the original papers add.

Very nice looking DJ. I’ve owned a few and looked and lots of DJs over the years and yours looks like it’s worth £2850 all day long.

You do see DJs on this forum cheaper than that but they all have issues of some sort.

I would only offer £2000 tops because it is going to need a service and assuming it goes back to Rolex, you can, in all reality, kiss goodbye to about £600 depending on how much needs replacing such as a lens etc.

For a non-quickset 1603 with 1575 calibre (rather than a quick-set 16030 with 3035 calibre) I think this would be a high price, especially from a private seller.

In 2019 I have just sold a really tidy 1601 (essentially the same model, but for having the dearer, fluted white metal bezel) that didn't have its original papers but did have a Rolex UK service card, having had over £1,000 of service work carried out in 2017. As a dealer offering a two year warranty I priced that at only £2,299. You can still see it if you look on the right website.

Some original dials, such as those with wide, double-track batons might add some interest, but yours has the simple batons in the style of later or service dials. I prefer that myself, but those who value a watch for its vintage qualities may prefer the older styles.

You can ask what you want as there is no right answer and everything is worth only what a willing seller and buyer will agree on, but in an already excited market I think you're squeezing a little too hard.

I thought the 1600 series from the early '60's onwards should have a " T SWISS T " dial fitted until their discontinuation ?

Think so, but it's the style of batons on which I commented. They are the thinner type, no?

Very interesting Haywood. Your 1601 at £2,299 with a two year warranty sounds a nice buy (it must have been someone bought it!).

For some time now I have seen prices asked for used watches in SC with no guarantees similar to the money asked from retailers who have to supply warranties.

Sales corner used to be good value but rarely is nowadays in my opinion.

Google "1603 wide boy" and you'll see some images of dials with the extra wide markers to which I was referring. Possibly some porn as well, but that's Google's targeted ads for you.

I paid just under £2500 for a Buckley dial 16030 with 1 year guarantee from a local bricks & mortar dealer in Q3 last year.
