Tough Dilemma - Need help with choice!

So I love a Speedmaster and the recent releases of limited editions has been a pain and makes it hard to make a choice but the Japan only Olympic editions were definitely my favourites.



Currently, I am in Japan and have the opportunity to view and see these watches. Unfortunately, I can’t afford all five watches and the classic Panda and Blue are not in stock with only a 2 month non guaranteed lead time and I will not be here that long and they will not ship even if I pay now because they can’t guarantee having stock!

Therefore, I have the option of the below two which I also like but I would be interested to know the collective WIS views on which one they would choose out of the two! Thanks

Personally the panda is the only one that does anything for me. But if you're dead set to on choosing between the red and green try and think what will match with more of your wardrobe and go with that

Agreed, think the itch for shifting it on for the Panda version will always be there.

Personally would hold out for a panda as previously stated, but if you like them both I would go for the one you think you will get the most wear out of.

I never enjoy being negative, but honestly neither. There is a reason why the two panda variants are more sought after - they're significantly better looking watches!

That isn’t going to happen as these are Japan only and if one does appear then I don’t want to pay silly inflated prices either.

Remember, I like all the models. Just the Panda is my top preference but isn’t available. I will not be unhappy with the red or green because I like them as well.

Good point! I loved the pics of the very similar red & white colour scheme of the Vancouver 2010 when it was released but was concerned that the white hands against the white dial would make it very difficult to actually read the time. However after finally seeing the watch in a jeweller's (in Lake Bled of all places) the on-line pics didn't show the black outline of the hands.

Of course it could be the Speedmaster doesn't have the black outline on the hands, a visit to an AD should hopefully answer any doubts about the red & white colour scheme. For me it's a winner!

I’m with David, I find the hands blend to much and hard to read the red one. If I had to choose between the two, green it is. Although the red kind of reminds me of the Alaska Project Speedy. So basically I’m no help am I.

It's not plating. The gold models cost ~£1100 more than the others.

Red in my view. The green and gold looks odd for not having any gold on the bracelet - would look a lot better if the narrowest links on the bracelet were gold too.

Having said that, the green and gold could look pretty cool on a green crocodile strap.

The panda and the blue are the only real desirable ones and that's why you can't get them.

I like the red bezel one; it reminds me of the red bezel on the original Speedmaster ‘limited edition’ - the yellow gold Speedmasters presented to Nixon et al. to commemorate the Moon landing.

Between the red bezel and the green bezel, a choice for me would be simple. One has a sort of racing vibe (the Speedmaster legacy), the green bezel and rose gold is definitely a dressier, luxury look.

Just curious, have you seen the Ultraman edition? Maybe more of an otaku appeal edition, but I thought it looked great even without the design provenance.

I'd have to go with the general sentiment here. Panda or maybe the blue are nice, the others are just consolation prizes. Save the cash and go for something you love.

I would wait and see if the other two come back into stock rather than buying one because its all they have left. However out of the two i would pick the red personally.

Ok so here is a quick update for anyone interested!

Thank you for all your comments and ideas and I have listened. Whilst there does not seem to be a Panda or Blue version of the speedmasters anywhere in Japan (well Osaka and Tokyo!), I decided not to compromise and go for the red or green version and therefore came home empty handed.

However, the OB did say that they could order one and that it would take around 2 months to arrive but I would still have to be there to pay and collect it. I can’t do that but a kind Japanese colleague has ordered the watch for me and bring it with them when they come to visit before Christmas. It means, I lose the 8% tax rebate but if it means I get the Panda then I can live with that!

So fingers crossed that one of these will be coming my way.
