That’s northern monkey services for you. It all works seamlessly in London.
And they wonder why it’s no one’s first choice! One shortish journey, tram and train. No way to buy an integrated ticket so I use both providers apps on my phone.
App 1 requires you to buy in advance then activate the ticket when you need it. App 2 requires you to buy ticket only when ready to travel as it activates automatically. Needless to say with App 1 in mind I accidentally bought in advance and had to ring for a refund.
How hard would it be to standardise on a process given both are local services? Bunch of morons acting in isolation.

I’d rather sit in my car in traffic for an hour than spend 20 mins jammed into a train with the general public!
You are not wrong. It’s a shambles. Our oyster equivalent is years away. Once they’ve had 200 meetings about pandering to all the stakeholders and coming up with a compromise that no one likes, least of all the poor customer.
Thankfully I’m off to collect a car 😀 No more of this if I can help it!
Agree the payment options are seamless in London, and it is really the only way to travel. But give me a car any day over public transport. Privacy, Air Con, Radio, Telephone. Whatever else you could need.
