I've looked into SEO for a few projects - most of the old tricks are a bit tough to get working due to well, everyone doing it.

The key is content, content and content. Start writing articles (if useful for potential buyers even better!), back linking to the site and keep it up. Try and get featured in local/national online newspapers/sites too and getting them to link to your site. The more you build your online presence the higher you get ranked. Easier said than done of course!

Not an SEO specialist but do work on website content and design occasionally. My only comment, hopefully constructive, is that the some of the images on the landing page are quite low resolution (the first image ("Marilyn") particularly and actually look out of focus as a result even on a laptop screen. The images on other pages are fine but the landing page looks like a they've used dummy images as a mock-up to allow for the tile effect.

You need to make better use of the core meta tags for starters e.g. title / description / keywords - make them relevant to the specific page content - don't get carried away though, keep within each tags character limits.

Recommend running each page through one of the many SEO page analyser websites online - fix any issues reported.

Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools - once done add you site manually, and work through the options / settings e.g. adding sitemaps.

^ as CrazyP said... play nice... the old 'tricks' will probably have a negative impact as they are very well known now.

The old tricks WILL have a negative impact. Google has made it clear repeatedly via Matt Cutts.

I would say that your site is weak on content to rank properly beyond your local area.

I would recommend a proper keyword research, then use that to write meaningful content.

For example, those technical notices are great in pdf. But they are not helping your ranking, whereas they could if they were also pages that people would look for.

It’s always difficult to give info which will be unpleasant to hear when you’ve worked hard on making a very clean website.
Also, organic searches are massively boosted by a sustained Adwords campaign. If only because it brings traffic, and if that traffic doesn’t bounce it tells google that your site is of interest to people when they land there.

Thanks for all the comments, the site is done in wordpress and its showing green in the SEO area for each key product, but still needs a lot of work as you have said. I have tried to do his myself recently but its all a bit lost on me. The images on the first page use to high res but when we checked a few SEO checkers they said the load time was to slow and to reduce image size!!

I am currently trying to get a blog to work but the wordpress addon does not seem to want to work, but its prob just me doing it wrong.

Will get to work on what you have suggested.

Regarding images, make sure you link them at the size you use them.
Get rid of all the unnecessary info like Exif, camera etc. PunyPNG or JPEGmini are your friends.
Your about page and your contact page do not show well on mobile. I believe that from 1st August Google ranks by mobile, not by desktop version anymore.

The mobile experience is a bit broken for me. Couple of issues:
    1. When you open the menu the width of the main content div isn't adapting, the extra width then makes the page resize to prevent a horizontal scroll.
    2. There looks to be a height issue on the main content div that doesn't always allow the browse button to be hit.
I'm sure there are more but that was a quick glance.
I'd say from an SEO point of view the first step is to get some tracking so that you can see where people are coming from, which terms they're using to find you etc. Then you can see how this lines up with your aspirations - how would you like people to land on your site, once they've landed what would you like them to do? Is the goal to get them to call you?
Getting the tracking right should mean you can see how any changes you make impact conversations.

Indeed my wifi is so crap I cannot open your site -or any other- on my laptop so I couldn’t check if you had GA but it’s absolutely essential as it is the only way you’ll learn how people find you, and whether or not they found what they were looking for.
You mention selling internationally: SEO for the WWW is different from SEO local. Make sure you cover both aspects.
Also, nothing to do with SEO per se but your offer page lacks consistency and logic: some floorboards have just a name, others have an area (sq metres), others have what I suppose is what they should all have, a price per sq metre.

My main business is fully eCommerce so totally relies on Google for business, SEO is very in depth and a few comments here will help but you really need a outsourced team to correct everything and put you on the right path.

Google changes its algorithms on a regular basis, so you need to know what you are doing is correct and not damaging your ranking, also social media plays a huge part in SEO now as does reviews so dont overlook those, luckily we had a good basic idea of SEO before we got a team on board which gave us a head start, but a good idea is not good enough, so expert advice is paramount if you want to get near page 1.

I keep a close eye on our online store sessions per day, no doubt as they are increasing so does our business, to the point you could work out your future income based on your click rate per day.

PPC (Pay per click, Google adwords) also helps your SEO and of course sales, but again this is a minefield and unless you know what you are doing you could blow a lot of money on pointless clicks in a day!

Find a company that you can trust to take on your SEO, while they sort this out and push you up the rankings you can work on other aspects of growing your business.

Got to remember this, you could be the best in your business but if no one knows your out there then you will not get the business.

I have my own digital marketing company. I have just messaged you a few questions but I would echo some of the comments on here. Local and national are very different.

I’m on mobile at the moment but will have a proper look at the site when I’m back at my desk.

Edit: Have had an initial look at it now. Ignore the large images red flag as they are essential to your type of business.

I worked for a large agency for years and we had some flooring clients who although weren’t my clients I ended up pouring through the data a few times and first thing I would say is that flooring is massively competitive online so you would have a fair amount of time to get results.

You are likely to need to mix Seo and PPC for this site and don’t neglect Instagram as it can be fantastic flooring/kitchens. Much less saturation nationally on insta in the UK too

My advice would be to hire Screaming Frog to do a full on site audit. Not cheap, probably coming in at around 5k, but they are absolutely anal and by far the best SEO agency I’ve ever hired. It took us ages to work through the audit they did for us as it was so comprehensive. I thought I had a really good handle on SEO but these guys made me look like a clown.

Once everything on site is optimised, throw lots of good content on the site with regular blogs/articles dripped on over time.

Then hire 10yetis for some PR and hopefully some decent backlinks.

    Thank me later!

Thanks everyone, we use to have a London store which took care of sales but we have relocated it back to Leeds. So now we are having to try find some extra work. Some great advice I think I will suggest to the directors to go down the paid route as it will get better results. Not sure they will sign off on 5k but will see. I am working on the social media side of things, got most up and running but not done instagram as yet.

The paid route is a good suggestion . But be careful: SEO is a daily job, or almost. Therefore you must make sure that there is someone to continue the job after the agency. It’s a moving target, especially if your competitors are active on that front: if they start competing for the same keywords as your niche, you will spot it on G. Analytics. You need to have a strategy to deal with it.
I personally believe that a good internet marketing agency would be a better bet. But of course it means a monthly budget. I believe that nowadays organic on its own will not allow you to rank except if you have an outstanding USP that you can translate in a medium to long tail keyword.
I would recommend a meeting with the agency to get an understanding of what they do and what they can achieve for your business.
I would also recommend some sort of form to fill in, whether for a brochure or a quote, that would act as a conversion goal as you cannot sell from your site.

Youtube vids can they be used to improve Google SEO as Google own Youtube?

The algorithm Google uses is secret so SEO is (educated) guesswork.
However the understanding is that google’s aim is to maximise user’s satisfaction; that is, user of its search engine’s satisfaction.
Therefore to rank you must have many visitors who stay on your website when they find it: it will mean that what you offer is relevant to the search they made. Better still if they then talk about you and link to your website. If you have a Youtube video that will help you achieve that, then it will de facto improve your SEO. But it’s irrelevant to Google owning Youtube.
You could be forgiven for thinking that putting porn would make your site ‘sticky’ (sorry, couldn’t resist). It doesn’t. Unless of course that is what you’re selling.

For marketing ор SЕО tasks, you need to use not only typical tools such as mailings and similar services, but you still need to conduct analytics and watch trends constantly. For example, learn how to track facebook ads in google analytics https://www.owox.com/blog/use-cases/...-facebook-ads/. After all, any analytics and the study of new articles leads to new results and great opportunities.

Gosh, it's a long while since I tinkered with websites and I remember an old trick using a single pixel gif in the same colour as the background but labelled with your keywords, eg keyword1.gif, keyword.gif etc. Things have come a long way since!

    From t'web:

Starting July 1, all new sites will be indexed using Google’s mobile-first indexing.

Google has announced that all new websites “previously unknown to Google Search” will be indexed using mobile-first indexing starting on July 1. Older web sites that are still not being indexed using mobile-first indexing will not be switched yet to mobile-first indexing on July 1st but be moved when those web sites are ready to be moved to mobile-first indexing.

Google’s statement. Google wrote “mobile-first indexing will be enabled by default for all new, previously unknown to Google Search, websites starting July 1, 2019. It’s fantastic to see that new websites are now generally showing users – and search engines – the same content on both mobile and desktop devices.”

Only new sites. To be clear, only brand new sites Google is not yet aware of, will be indexed using mobile-first indexing by default. Other sites that have already moved over to mobile-first indexing will also continue to be indexed using mobile-first indexing. But older sites not yet migrated will continue to be indexed the old-fashion way, desktop-first indexing, until those sites are ready.

“For older websites, we’ll continue monitoring and evaluating pages for their readiness for mobile first indexing, and will notify them through Search Console once they’re seen as being ready,” the company said.

No notifications. Unlike old web sites that get notifications when they are moved over, Google won’t send notifications to new web sites because that will be the default state. “Since the default state for new websites will be mobile-first indexing, there’s no need to send a notification,” Google said.

What is mobile-first indexing? Mobile-first indexing is simply how Google crawls and indexes the web. Instead of looking at the desktop version of the page, Google looks at the mobile version of the page. In more simple terms, Google is crawling and indexing your web page based on how it renders on a mobile phone versus a desktop computer. Now over 50% of what Google indexes is indexed over mobile-first indexing.
