    BBC2 The Repair Shop

Apologies if this has been discussed before. I am really enjoying this series on BBC2. It's a cross between Antiques Roadshow (without "do you have any idea how much it might be worth") and Shed and Buried (without Henry Cole going "hmmm?" to camera).

There's some clock repair for an extra TZ-UK interest.

I have registered to have my 1902 Rudall Carte flute repaired.

Got an email reply that they've had a massive response and that I might not hear from them for ages, but fingers crossed.

It would be great to get it back in usable condition... I've struggled to find anyone who will touch it.

I'm both amazed and delighted in equal measure at the people who can fix old things back to working condition.

Just watching an episode of this on BBC 1 just now. I have to say I love watching Steve the watchmaker at work - just fascinating!

  5. #5
Been watching it for many weeks now. I used to think myself very good at repair / restoration but these guys are top Pro`s.

FYI one of them wears a Rolex and im sure i spotted a couple of other high end watches.

It's one of the few programmes I watch regularly. The chap with the Rolex is Will, the wood/furniture restoration expert. He impresses me as he's young but a truly skilled craftsman and artisan. All the rest of the team are equally skilled and all of their work is truly extraordinary.

A very nice, almost soporific programme; I just wish I could watch it in peace!

The clock Steve Fletcher worked on today was a Dent Charles Frodsham. Amazing to think the friction into the leather, the self winding, the precise distance, etc all worked out. Brilliant, wouldn’t want one, but what an indulgence.

I too love this program, but the ratio of people crying to craftsmen working really frustrates me.

love the program they are all very skill-full and sometimes the story that people tell about there item is very touching and sometimes water comes out of my eyes.don't mind admitting this.

It's one of my favourite tv shows, in fact the only time I use 'catch-up' is if I missed an episode.

Flipping heck - it's more than 2 years ago that I emailed them about my Grandfather's flute (not a euphemism) !!

The flute is now 118 years old and has survived two World Wars (as did my grandfather) and was used in numerous concerts in the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra between 1950 and 1980.
At one point, my grandfather was the oldest living (and still working) member of the Musician's Union - there aren't many professional musicians who still perform regularly in their 80s, let alone 90s.
He taught me to play the flute (to grade 8) and I'd like it in working order so that I can continue playing it.

    Apart from that, no.

I love the programme. I find it strangely relaxing. The clock on this weeks programme is something I have never seen before, I would love one but have no where to put it.

Don't tell the ladies of a certain age but Will... Wears an Invicta not a Rolex!

Its nice to see Steve wears one of his Meridian's.

Steve runs a family business in Witney which is not to far from me. He specialises in repairing Elliott clocks and can make any part in his workshop. These Elliot clocks were popular in the 1920s/30s and were the sort of thing your Bank Manager would have on his mantle piece. A bit like they drove Rovers etc. Elliotts made the dial and mechanism and fitted it into any style of case that the customer wanted.

I bought one a few years ago and it's fitted in a solid brass case about 9" high with glass sides. I took it to Steve and he declared it to be in perfect condition and told me that I was wasting my money having it serviced but to come back in 5 years when it would benefit from a once over.

    A very nice man.

Great, heart warming tv, I love the time and effort they put in to repairing something that has no real value to anyone other than the owner.

Looking forward to each episode has helped make lockdown more bearable.

    Is it a Rolex though?

I've been straining to see it in detail as they keep doing that soft focus thing.

It looks like it might be a bi-metal Sub, but there have been a couple of almost close up dial shots where it doesn't look quite right.

I watch it for Sonnaz, Mrs Gyp watches it for Will. Excellent all round family viewing.

    The clock-on-a-slope was excellent

They've probably chucked out your enquiry.

Lovely back story but not enough crying involved.

That said, I have given up watching the show now. It all seems rather samey and the bonhomie from the repairers and the "edge of tears" stuff from the owners got a bit tiresome for me.
    Cheers,

Marvellous programme, but I wouldn't trust Jay Blades to re-cover my old schoolbooks with wallpaper. Those of a certain age will know what I mean...

Yeah, that's what I assumed... I certainly wouldn't be bawling my eyes out at 'the reveal', but it would be lovely to have it playable again.
As with many programs of this ilk (and I include shows like DIY SOS, which I think is an amazing idea) the sensationalism of the back-story is a bit much.

I've just zoomed in on a recording of the programme in which he repaired a small box with a hidden compartment containing a key and you're quite right, it is an Invicta Pro Diver 8927OB.

Great show to play "Drink along to .."
A sip of something every time somebody cries, mentions the war, touches their face on the reveal, or says "can i touch it?".

Always wondered what the guy outside has done that they never let him in the main shed..

.. and what happened to the Bear Ladies? ...

I watched the clock episode in Oct with interest. I'd dearly like a Dent Incline Clock, if anyone sees one...

    Boring thread update
Watching an episode this afternoon and the chap who repairs music boxes looks to be wearing a Seiko Gen2

I am sure nobody care’s but I quite like watch spotting and this is quite a good series to indulge in this strange past time.

The lady repairing the gloves is wearing an IWC pilots watch. Possibly one of the new MK11 reissue.

One of the episodes (10th March 2021, I think) had a good story - It featured the repair of a family heirloom piece that belonged to WW1 British soldier. I'm not sure what the watch was but there was a great back story to how the watch was stolen and found again. I'm a romantic old soul and love stories like that!

I would have liked to have seen a bit more footage of the actual repair but I suspect that would have been really boring to other viewers who are not into this hobby! Worth searching for though.

I'd like to see more of the craftsmanship as well, but agree that it doesn't make as 'good' TV as middle aged ladies crying.
