    First Panerai....

My first Panerai and I absolutely love it!!

To be honest I simply didn’t ‘get’ Panerai for years but having tried on a few I’d been on the lookout for a ‘beginners Base’ model for a while when a friend decided he was selling his 390, so it was a no-brainer.

At 44mm it sits perfectly on my 7.75” wrist and I love the simplicity of the two hand/no date dial, and the coffee/cream dial and gold hands just seem so much softer than the black and white.

Only thing is now I’m coming over all Panerai Fan-Boy and lusting after 944 among many many others!!

Hi Dan, been a while since you first tried on my 111. I have been looking at Pams again recently, either an 8 day Luminor or a white dial 655 have caught my attention, I just can’t work out what I would sell to find one.

Eurgh, everywhere I look over the past week or so there have been these bloody Panerai threads, flaunting the latest oversized wrist carbunkle.

I'm hopefully within a few weeks of my own...

Good choice, was looking at the 390 over the last few weeks.

On a slippery slope, as above now you need straps, and no doubt another couple of Pams to keep this one company!

    Enjoy.

    Congrats. A slippery slope....
(NB these straps are only a modest representation, and I'm not even going to start on the number of additional PAM watches I've bought since the 233 arrived)

My OCD is loving that case!

Lovely watch OP, the more I see these pop up the more interested I get, though not seen one in the flesh and they'd probably swamp my 6.75" wrist.

The 655 is one of my all time favourites. Micro-rotor movement, no date, funky 1940s case, and a manageable 42mm case.

Thanks for all the comments Gents, and while I'm now embarrassed to admit it "all Panerais looked more or less the same to me" a few years ago!!

I've already bought a four new straps and three buckles for it (I fancied a deployent but couldn't get it to sit comfortably on my wrist) and I'm already sensing it's very much the start of a slippery slope!!

Thanks again Gents, and if anyone's selling a 944 please do let me know!!

Blimey Phil, that must've been six, maybe seven years ago now?

    Hope all's well mate....

I’d like a Pam myself but the ones I want the most are out of my price range atm.

    Very nice. Enjoy!

My first. PAM 49 bought in 2009, small for some but I still love it. Been round the world with me and bears the scars.

Oh dear a very slippery slope once you loose your Panerai cherry you suddenly realise that though you thought before they are all the same with ownership you discover those individual nuances, just enjoy the ride.

Despite being a bit of a marmite brand I think Panerai make wonderful watches in the main, and the base models have a particular appeal.

Congrats on yours. My 512 is well inside the inner sanctum of those I have at the moment.

Tony, do you have a preference for the 512 or the 337 you used to have? Thanks.

Tony, can I ask about the strap on that one, please?

Good question. They're both beautiful (and very similar in the obvious ways) and both incredibly wearable, even on smaller wrists. On balance I'd probably go with the 1940 case of the 512 but it's a close call.

Yes, it's a Hirsch Heritage in golden brown. One of these.

Thanks Tony. Interesting to hear as the 337 is high on my list but have been considering the 512 and 574 as they are easier to source. I think I prefer the lume colour on the 337/574 to the 512.

Brilliant - thanks for that. Is the buckle removable so the Panerai buckle can be used instead?

    Lovely watch! Congrats.

I seem to blow hot and cold with Panerai. I'm leaning towards getting one at the mo, but there aren't any dealerships near me. Would be nice to try before I buy.

    Cool

Great watch, I certainly think that Panerai models looks best with a 'clean' dial. I'm sure a strap collection will soon follow!

Love that strap on the watch, may I ask who makes that one ?

  36. #36

    First Panerai....

Love the 390, almost bought one before I picked up my 560. Was a tough choice but the ‘in house’ movement and sandwich dial swayed it for me. Saying that I still gravitate to the 390, seeing as I can’t pull of the 372!
