Rogue one is worth a watch after 7 as well.
Hi,
I notice the original film is on telly tomorrow. It's the only one in the series I have watched, back in the 80s.
I have been meaning to check out the rest of the series for a while.
Should I start with the original ones and watch in order of release or start with episode 1 ? ( sounds like a stupid question when I read it back !)
Cheers, Mark

I disagree.
I think there are some low points in the films, but many of them are near perfect. I am a massive fan, and I think this qualifies me to say:
1, then 2, then 3, etc etc
You should now see them in the chronological order, even if they were made higgledypiggledy.
Anakin, Ben Kenobi, Vader, Luke, Leia, etc etc they have and order and family history, so that's how they'll make sense.
Also: write on a bit of card the following, and refer to during your marathon:
The Phantom Menace 1999
Attack of the Clones 2002
Revenge of the Sith 2005
A New Hope 1977
The Empire Strikes Back 1980
Return of the Jedi 1983
The Force Awakens 2015
The Last Jedi 2017
I’d watch them in part order now - it should make more sense of the saga overall. You just have to accept the modern CGI is better than the originals, but it’s still impressive.
It's just a matter of time...
I disagree with the part order brigade. The reason for this is because there are two important plot twists in Empire that are completely spoilt by watching them in 'chronological' order...(obviously not mentioned so as not to spoil it for the OP)
I definitely think you should watch them as made i.e IV,V,VI,I,II,III,VII,VIII and make sure you watch the original versions rather than the versions George Lucas tinkered with later. It's not a perfect order but I think it's important to experience the original trilogy as was. Leave Rogue 1 and Solo till after watching them all.
Definitely this, it also removes most of jar jar thankfully

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Oh aye good point, definitely do this. I really enjoyed Rogue One, and it is a good intro..

Watch them in the order they were released, only sensible way imo

It’s also worth watching The Clone Wars animated series which sits between Ep 2 and 3. This is every bit as good as the best movies. Rebels is good too. That sits between Ep 3 and 4, just before Rogue One.
I’d watch them in the order of year they were released as intended .
It’s like watching godfather 3 first or jaws 4 . All spoilt . I watched John wick 2 first :( I’ll never get over that

I’d watch them in release order tbh. Also a massive fan - might be worth watching Rogue One first which is a brilliant film imho. I’d totally avoid ‘The Last Jedi’ which I found incredibly disappointing. There’s just so much wrong with it on every level, do t get me started!.............

Both Johns Wicks are great fun, anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong!

I love the machete order. That gets my vote.
Whilst trying not to de-rail this thread too much, I had a slight peep over my shoulder and saw that you've had a little pop at me before which I really hadn't paid any attention to at all...
However, I'm now beginning to wonder if you're developing what appears to be the start of some kind of fascination with me ??
Don't spoil it for yourself will you, I'm really not worth it son and I'm married too....
Have a nice day now, run along.
I am talking about everything you have written since then. Read it though and tell me it’s not aggressive both in tone and language. I cannot imagine I am the first person to mention this over the years.
Sarcasm is a useful tool against bully’s I find.
I will back out of this now and leave you to it, last thing I want to do is get into a virtual argument with someone. I am sure we both have better things to do. Sorry to the OP, I rarely get caught up in forum shenanigans!

These aren't the movies your looking for.
As a kid the first couple were good, but the recent (The Phantom Menace onwards) efforts have been dire in the extreme.
Seriously soend your time watching good movies.
Rogue One
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Ignore the rest , I struggle to stay with any of the others longer than 30 minutes. Even as a kid I walked out of Return of the Jedi feeling a bit cheated.
I’d rather watch Star Trek : TMP and Wrath of Khan than any of the other Star Wars movies. Even the rebooted treks are better.
Stick with the release order. I did the same way with my kids. It’s how we have all seen them so easier to discuss. Also the newer ones have better graphics. Watching those first and then moving to the older ones makes them look unnecessarily old (especially for recent generations).
The argument about the ending of ROTJ doesn’t hold if you watch proper versions. I found the Despecialised versions which are basically the old movies, as they were in the theatre (no extra edits) in the best quality possible taken from various sources.
So watch it like we did :-)

Release order and maybe stop at the second?
The films are good fun and there are some excellent special effects, but even as a teenager, I felt it wane after the frankly stunning first film.
My son is 21 and loved the more recent films. I saw them, except Solo so far.
Technically they blow the originals away, but like so many modern films, they lack characters you care about and interesting plot development.

Breitling Cosmonaute 809 - What's not to like?
You coulg always seek out "The Phantom Edit" which is episode 1 with JarJar Binks removed. Or there are other fan edits, such as "Fear, Anger, Hate", which is episodes 1-3 condensed into a single film (with all the crap bits removed).
Definitely don't watch the prequels (first) as they spoil all the mystery of the original trilogy.
I'd even put off Rogue One as Vader is as hard as effing nails in his cameo and it makes the original Vader a bit weedy and ridiculous.
What's the consensus of the best bluray versions to buy of the films? Although I assume a 4k version will be on its way at some point?
A think it's vital to set the scene with this first....

The Despecialized Editions by Harmy are the best versions IMO
As close to the theatrical release as you can get & all the better for it, no weird add-ons, no weird music or voices & most importantly no Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ, they even have the original opening crawl at the beginning of SW
I've got the complete Bluray set of the 6 films & the extras are good, colour is a bit off though, but they are still the messed with versions that GL thinks are OK & I'm going to say it again, Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ, why George why???
This is wrong:
This is right
Will there be restored 4k versions with Atmos etc. at some point do you think?
It's only a question of when. I've little doubt Lucas will supervise it himself. It'll look glorious.
