I did a decat, and a booster plug on my Bobber, and did the same on my mates Thruxton R.... both bikes run much better..

Before the booster plug the bottom end felt quite flat and unresponsive, especially in traffic. After the mod the throttle response on both bikes is much improved...

Love it - sounds a bit counterintuitive with all this global warming don't you think.

So CAT removal has no impact legally - wow!

I shall bear that in mind.

Why do they fit them then ? Legislation I guess but with no MOT feedback loops - a bit numptyish

The legislation covers what manufacturers need to provide on their motorbike in order to sell them and Euro 3 (2005) tightened the permissible limits on carbon monoxide/hydrocarbons/nitrogen oxides within the exhaust gas to the point that catalytic converters were needed.

    Hey Hey its a Monkey!

Well screaming two stroke sold last week so I decided to replace my nine year old Suzuki Van Van with a bit of Honda fun.

10 hp, 185 mpg, 27” seat height. And best of all the IMU out of a 2016 Fireblade to control the ABS ( front wheel only) and prevent all 100 kgs doing a stoppie!

You are spot on, it feels like a normal bike stability wise, it only has four gears so its lazy through the box, but its soooo agile. It turns on a sixpence and at 105 kgs is just thrums along. 40 miles from new and Im still smiling!

There’s a classic bike restoration workshop near me where they also buy the Chinese ones and fit a 20bhp, 150cc kit.

They sell them at about £1500; that’s a lot of fun for not much money!

Did a European tour on my F700GS last year. Looking at mid week rides around the Dales probably no more than 100 miles. Plus to and from the shops as a beer taxi :)

Just got back from the Ardennes, Eifel and Nurburgring where the 1250 performed faultlessly (other than a punctured tyre that was thankfully replaced by a very efficient BMW dealer). Super conditions and could not have asked for better roads...

Nice photos Spareparts, its nice to see riders doing sensible distances. When we tour Europe on the bike or the missus MX5 we aim for 220/250 per day.

Doing that there is plenty of time to stop and appreciate the places you travel through.

A pal of mine did an Alaska guided ride with BMW , some of the days were 600 milers!

To be fair you can easily do 600 miles in Alaska and the scenery will be exactly the same!

I used to equate monster miles with a good day's riding (I've done Lands End to John O'Groats in one go twice) but now a day out riding on interesting roads, appreciating the views with a couple of tea stops seems to work well.

Mind you, telling the BMW Nav VI to route using "curvy roads" means that I spend a lot of gravel strewn single carriageways with grass up the middle, so even a long day in the saddle won't result in massive distances

But would you need to inform your insurance company? Isn't there normally a presumption that all modifications should be notified, whether or not there is a subsequent alteration in premium?

Absolutely - I do not do motorways at all, so 220-250 is spot on to enjoy a full day riding plus always enjoy a proper lunch somewhere nice. Passing through villages and small towns is always a pleasure to see real life going on. I can never understand why some bikers sit on motorways in a straight line, sometimes paying extra toll money for the privilege, watching petrol service stations go by!

Glad you had a good time Spareparts! Loving the can. Totally agree that 250 miles a day is about right to really enjoy it and avoid boring roads.

I've got an original 1970 Monkey bike, one of the very early low exhaust models.. use it quite a lot around central London, always makes everyone smile.

It has fold down handlebars so it fits in the back of my car.

Quite rare with the low pipe Neil. Always thought they looked more balanced like that. The latter cross frame zorsts like mine have a function of warming your right leg, but thats about it.

I have some idea of my speed by revs in case the speedo breaks.

Top gear 4,000 revs spot on an indicated 70mph.

I’ve got speed on the TomTom but can’t see it when I am riding so I have set red speed warnings on screen.

No annoying blue tooth I glance down.

I’ve also used Tip ex on my speedo housing to indicate 30,40,60 and 70mph.

Ah the joys of old analogue instruments with poor close sight.

So... i missed the sound too! Having sold my last Akra to Matt, I picked up another EU3 Akra and fitted it just yesterday. The bass has returned! I also did not appreciate until fitting it how much better it looks as it matches the finish of the front alu panel...

Just about to commence the biggest DIY job I'll have done so far - removing the exhaust link pipe containing the flapper valve, and then removing the associated servo/actuator; and replacing it all with a flapper delete pipe and servo eliminator (and replacing the silencers, obviously ). First time I'll have put a bike with a single-sided swing arm on a stand, too.

    Slowly and carefully...

Thanks - the Akra really is the best zorst option for the GS. There was an independent German article I saw a while back that tested a range of different 3rd party zorst options for the GS, and only the Akra came out with a performance advantage.

No, I’m replacing the stock exhaust for now - just removing the flapper. I’ll be changing the end can too, though, probably for an SC Project.

    Your bike looks lovely, btw!

Can you not just modify the flapper valve actuator to keep the flap permanently open?

I'm thinking about a motorcycle lift and that one looks nice. Any advice on what to look for? My heaviest bike is a T120 Bonneville @250kgs but I also have a couple lighter bikes with side stand only (XL250+TR6R).

Yes, by disconnecting it and using a servo eliminator to avoid false display warning lights and ECU faults - that would be even more reason to get rid of it though, as it’s an ugly thing.

My advice having bought one a couple of years ago, is buy the longest one you can find.
Mine is too short really; I can just about get it on the centre stand but couldn’t use a paddock stand (which you’ll need for the ones without a centre stand).

I’m contemplating putting a longer top on it but then that just adds to the weight.

I was thinking disconnect the linkage from the servo to the flap shaft, so the servo still operates and the ECU is fooled.

Oh, probably but it would still be an ugly and unnecessary lump of plastic.

Mine is too short really; I can just about get it on the centre stand but couldn’t use a paddock stand (which you’ll need for the ones without a centre stand).

I’m contemplating putting a longer top on it but then that just adds to the weight.
Hmm, I wasn't thinking of paddock stands having assumed I could leave the bike on a side stand on one of these.
