Steve you had dodged a bullet there. Just take it easy over the next few days and if you feel unwell get checked out. Your body has taken a fair old hammering looking at the bike.

MCN's Neevesey raves about these. Probably goes to show that while it's easy to gravitate towards superbikes and hypernakeds, the fun and the opportunity to max out our abilities, with a massive grin on the face, comes with smaller, lighter bikes. Wouldn't necessarily take one of these around Mallory, but B roads and mountain passes, hell yes.

Andrew I was in Woods on Monday lusting at the Scramblers. Left at 5:30 and rode through three rainbows on the A55. Must be a record for me, plus Im glad I put my wet weather gear on.

The owner rang me tonight to check up on my well-being.... I’m hoping Ash comes around to show me his new bike tomorrow.👍

Fitted a tail tidy and LED indicators front and back to my MT09 on Saturday.

Got a break in the weather early Sunday morning so got out to Horseshoe pass.
    Great mornings ride.

Getting out on more longer journeys on this bike than previous bikes so I feel like I need a quieter helmet.

I like the look of the Icon airflite anyone got one?
    Any other recommendations?
I have a Bell SRT modular now which is convenient but I think a fixed face would be quite a bit quieter.

Thanks Andy, and thanks all who have expressed concern. The bike is a CAT N write off and I'm now in negotiation with the insurance co. to see what they will pay out and how much I can buy it back for..I know a couple of Ducati guys who will break it for parts etc so am waiting to get their offer before hoping to get a lower bid accepted. I believe I could make another £500 on top of the pay out which will cover the excess on the policy.

On a bright note it was great to see Jack Miller take his Duke over the line in 1st place at Le Mans yesterday...

  9. #9759
wow Steve to walk away from that.

It's a shame when the bike you have is not easily replaced, that the gutting part for me. Glad to see you are well

Many people will tell you that modular helmets are actually quieter than full-face because they form a better seal around the neck area, although it's always a matter of personal judgement.

In the end, I think good earplugs are the most effective solution, particularly if wind noise is the main issue.

I've started wearing ear plugs on my way to meet up with the guys I ride with on the motorway.

    They work great.

The problem with this is when I do meet up with the guys. I cant hear them over intercom with the plugs in so I take them out.

We tend to stay off the motorway so it is less of a problem but I would like a helmet which was generally quieter.

Never even got out of the car to check how I was..partner got out, looked and walked away. When I tried to take her details she couldn't talk as was "on the phone to her insurance company" despite the car being on trade plates..

Luckily I walked away...the bike has been written off this morning. Fortunately I never ride in anything else but full kit..leather trousers, zipped to leather jacket, Daytona boots, Arai lid and full length gloves with finger armour.

I listened to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 a couple of days ago..apparently 170,000 "cash for crash" incidents were believed to have taken place last year...be careful fellas and make sure you're fully suited and booted too..

Some advice given to me by a couple of motorcycle police who's bikes i look after.... Don't get up, stay on the floor and get the police involved.
I took their advice back in 2012 when a minicab driver pulled across the road in front of me. I was ok, but saw it was a minicab, with a foreign driver so stayed down.
Good job i did as the car wasn't his, but he was insured to drive another vehicle. The following day the police who attended got the CCTV footage from a building overlooking the accident spot.
The driver was prosecuted and received 9 points and an £850 fine.
Unfortunately he never did attend court in two canceled hearings. The third hearing was held in his absence.

The police and the crown prosecution both said if i hadn't of stayed down and got the police involved he'd have simply disappeared and i'd have had to claim off my own insurance.

Do you think she was from the
    dealership that owned the car?

The insurance assessor who saw the bike this morning said the insurance company will do all the checks to see if she had a history of similar events...I had my mate behind me as a witness but the insurer won't argue the case and just want to pay me out...I will however try and by it back as the parts I can salvage are worth a few £'s.
That explains things. Glad to hear there's no libility issues and hopefully you'll get a fair settlement sorted - and quickly too.

...quick update. The insurance company called me yesterday. The bike was insured for £4k (I paid £3100 in Sept 2019 and knew I got a great deal).

They have offered me £5k with the option to buy the bike back at £1400

I have spoken to a couple of Ducati specialists who will break the bike for parts and so far I've been bid £1600 (sight unseen) I reckon I could get £2k for it and make £600, so I'm quite pleased. At the moment I've yet to accept their offer and may well try for a a little more as I really fancy the 1098 listed last week on SC

Sounds good. But if you've got evidence of similar spec bikes for sale for more then it's worth pushing them for more.

I can't figure how this would be a crash for cash. Aren't most of those a case of the person that was rear ended claiming for personal injury usually due to whiplash? How do you possibly convince anyone you suffered whiplash when a biker bounced off the back of your 2 tonne truck?

I think the person's just an idiot. And an inconsiderate one at that.

I think the explanation of a driver new to automatics and braking with his left foot is the most plausible. Personal experience from my father when we moved to the US in the early seventies, and from a Renault 16 TS and Peugeot 204 to a Ford LTD may mean that I am biased though...

I bought a DSG S3 about 10 years ago. First time my wife drove it she merged on to a dual carriageway, slammed on the brakes and pulled the gear selector back in to neutral while stepping on the accelerator. We stopped dead in the middle of the lane. Thank god there was nothing immediately behind us.

Probably a good argument for not having a selector that looks anything like a manual gear stick in an automatic.

Many moons ago, my father has 2 Citroen CX 2400; one manual, one C-Matic. The C-Matic worked like an auto in that it had a torque converter, but it was up to the driver to change the gears with a gear lever. The biggest difference was that the manual made a crunching noise when you forgot.

Sold my CB750 that I built over winter. Chap collected it on Tuesday and messaged the following day to say the 70mile journey home went well.

The cash only lasted 48hrs on my fireplace... as I went out yesterday to pick up a 2007 Bonnie to keep my Speedmaster company. Needs a right good clean up now though as it was chucking it down all the way home.

I passed the theory today. Haven't ridden since the CBT on Easter Monday so I'm looking forward to getting back out, under more instruction.

Slow and steady wins the race.

And in all honesty, I'm still quite terrified...

Lad went out yesterday evening to ride the roads around the test centre.

Despite having new RST kit, he returned a few hours later completely soaked through, and an all-night drying session hasn't resulted in lovely dry gear. His Gore Tex boots have done a great job of keeping in the water that ran down his legs inside his suit.

Not sure if him squelching into the test centre will earn him extra points but we'll see :-)

Dont know if its the same on the RST but my suit has so many venting zips, if you leave one open or the collar slightly loose, the Gore Tex Pro accounts for nothing. Good determination though and at least he knows the roads better around the test site. Good luck to him, and start hiding the keys for your bigger bikes:):)

The suit has loads of vents but all were carefully closed. In the 3 hours he was out in it yesterday he'd have been better off on a jet ski I reckon. I've only once had a properly waterproof set of waterproofs, which were Triumph branded Gore Tex about 20 years ago (I'm guessing); very simple 2 piece, no liners, no vents, minimal armour with matching gauntlets. Not much crash protection but they did the job of keeping the wind and rain out. Shame they shrank.

Regards my bigger bikes, it may be a good thing that I've nothing above 65bhp at the moment.

I was pretty sure, but with the current system and zero hours of tuition there was always a worry that there was something he'd miss

Nothing for the moment. This pass is only A1, so it really only means that he can now ride his YBR without L-plates. On a motorway. And abroad. And <gulp> with a pillion.

It does mean no repeat CBT in July, or ever, and no need to do his theory again when he looks to move up to an A licence which he's likely to do later this year.

But for now, in reality it means no L plates. And a smiley boy. And a proud dad.

Any mechanically minded members out there who might be able to shed some insight to my latest hiccup?

I have a 1990 BMW K100 which on the way home over the weekend started spewing white fumes and began to run quite rough.

Upon looking down at the gauges I realized I had no electrics (but engine was still running), for I don't know how long.

Seems a very slim chance both these would happen randomly at the same time, so one must have caused the other.

    Any thoughts would help!

Looks like I got a busy (and greasy) weekend coming up

Yep I forgot how complicated getting a full license is these days, best feeling ever as a biker getting to throw the L plates away, a great right of passage for a young guy

    More bike related stuff

Well done to your lad Gyp, another proud moment as a father!

WRT the problem K100, the white smoke and rough running sounds like a blown cylinder head gasket and unrelated to the no electrics. There must actually be done electrics or you’d not get a spark, precisely what if the electrics isn’t working?

If it’s oily smoke then it could be piston rings or valve stem seals. Test the smoke by putting your hand over the end of the exhaust, the colour of your hand will tell you if it’s oil or not.

Looking back, the realisation that at 17 I went from never having ridden a motorbike to full licence holder able to ride anything I wanted to in less than 6 months is quite terrifying. That in an era when jumping on a 100mph 2-stroke 250 with L plates was the norm. It was only financial constraints that meant I didn't get a litre bike for a couple of years.

As much as it's an expensive hassle, having a tiered licencing system does seem like a sensible thing to do.

Looks like I got a busy (and greasy) weekend coming up
I work on these for a living, have done for 34 years.... need more info. Are the electrics working now ? what do you mean by "no electrics" ? instruments, starting/turning over ?.... you must have had some electrics, even with the engine running rough otherwise it would stop dead as the fuel injection, fuel pump, ignition etc all need electrics.
Remove coolant cap and engine oil filler cap and look for a mayonnaise type of gunk.
How many miles on the engine ? Does the engine rattle and rumble ? could be the output shaft rivets are loose or a couple have disappeared.

I've a couple of low mileage K100 engines if needed, 38/45K miles.

Worn starter motor brushes can cause all sorts of electrical problems.

Agreed it's definitely a smarter idea to let people rise the ranks of bhp gradually

I remember when sticking a sidewinder with L plates on any bike legally transformed it into a Trike and you could ride a 1000cc bike on a provisional license, to make matters worse the sidewinder made the bike an absolute death trap, I remember people running a bungee cord to lift the wheel up so it was never in contact with the ground when riding upright.

Amazing this many of us survived the 80's really.
