My second T120 (another one of those on the list of 'bikes I regretted selling') and it'll nicely fill the gap between sports bike and trail bike, as well as providing a 2-up tourer.

My Bonneville-into-a Desert-Sled customisation is slowly progressing. So far I have

Cut down the seat base, built the foam up and re-sculpted it to emulate a Bates seat. I have re-edged it and it is ready for a new cover.
Bought and fitted Burly Scrambler Handlebars, they look good and only needed a re-route of the throttle cables to fit.
Bought a used rear fender, chopped it down and drilled it for a new tail light (also bought). It is near ready for paint.
Bought a used front fender, cut that down too and prepped for paint. It is now primed. I was shocked how bad a state the fender bracket/fork brace was under there, for a 2013 bike it showed massive corrosion pitting. the only part of the bike that has done so.
Removed and stripped the tank for paint, now acid etch primed
Removed the side panels, fixed one, prepped and primed them both.
Removed the exhausts for custom alternatives (I have chopped the fitting heads off the pipes to re-weld onto the new one)
    Removed the O2 sensors
Got the new spots to make into headlights, I hopefully will have linear diffusers on their way to spread the beam for use as such.
Cut the rear spars back on the frame and fitted a kinked round tail loop, like the originals had. It needs welding in.
Bought a few other things too, I am enjoying the journey.
As the thing is mostly strpped, I am not sharing so many photos yet.

It’s a 1995 R1100GS with 9,000 miles on the clock. To be honest it looks brand new. I’ve been hankering after a nice oil head GS since I got my R9T and I’ve paid a premium for the unbelievable condition of this.

Now I just need to decide whether to liquidate some watches, the R9T or keep everything. There’s just enough room in the garage!
John nice bike, get yourself on ukgser, it a great resource for oil heads, with lots of advice and some nice bits for sale

Back in the game thanks to Matt8500, I’ve been waiting to take some pics of my own but it hasn’t stopped raining since I picked it up! I got a couple of hours on it on the journey home after collecting it and I must say, it was a great ride home and I’m really impressed with it, I’m looking forward to many more miles. So a nice pic from the sales advert and a sorry looking one from my garage, just waiting for a break in the weather.

I like the seat! Very 90s.

I’ve already bought the last NOS BMW 1100GS top box in the UK dealer network, new roundels and ‘Touring’ badges for the panniers and various other bits and pieces to return it to as original as possible.

Sadly the R8 and the carpet belong to the dealer and not me. I just need to squeeze the GS in here...

    I’ve also joined UKGSer ;)

Is that the one with the electrical brake servo? I had one with that system and was advised that, irrespective of any other servicing, regularly replacing the fluid in the ABS (which required BMW equipment) was imperative to keep the system working properly.

The BMW fluid change wasn't cheap but the replacement servo was very pricey.

TBH there are so many conflicting opinions online about the ABS on these bikes (remove, don’t remove, it’s good, bad, indifferent...) that I’m just going to make sure it’s been seen to before I take delivery.

We’re having new tyres as part of the deal as the ones on it are ageing now even though they look new. My priority is a safe bike I can ride as well as something that will appreciate as an asset (hopefully).

I’ve had two R1100’s with abs. First one broke at 110000 and I removed it. ( easy job )
my second one has 48000 and is fine. Keep the battery strong and change all fluids often. No need to remove it... it will likely work for many years yet.

Great! This has 9k so hopefully some legs in the ABS unit for the foreseeable.

    New incoming

bought this today, always wanted one.

    Can’t wait to get it.

Also, for those interested, I had an eBay code of PRICEWIN which got me 10% off a nav 6 and the vario panniers, happy days!

Saw this today on my first proper ride on the new GS- weirdest ‘bike’ I’ve seen in a while!

  30. #2730
I'm sure I'd be really impressed if I rode one, as (probably unnecessary) fear of losing the front end is always a worry.

The reviews I’ve seen say that they ride really well once you forget about the front end, there was a mag article where three riders took one out, one of the riders was a racer and I’m pretty sure he said that he was quicker on the trike than a two wheeler - there was just bags more confidence.

There’s 11 different linkages in the front suspension, though, so best invest in a decent washbrush and shares in wd40

  32. #2732
I know someone who owns one (among several other bikes) and he is massively impressed by its front end grip...

  33. #2733
I’m intrigued by it, but it’s under-powered for the weight and very wide!

When the Tour De Yorkshire bike race came through about a month ago the camera teams were using Nikkens as the camera bike. I gues it might be a bit more stable. As stated above if you see the front end without the fairing / screen on its like a meccano set built by an Aerospace engineer

    It's a bag of arse, a trike.
All the disadvantages of a bike, with no advantages of a car.
Sitting on it, it's like being on a quad bike.
Looking at it from the rear, it's like an MT09 trying to mount a quad bike.
What on earth were Yamaha thinking?

It's not actually that wide, it's just the width is not where you're used to seeing it. It's only 6cm wider than a standard MT09 and it's 10cm narrower than a BMW R1200RT for example.

Underpowered? Possibly, but I suspect this one was more about proving the concept and getting it accepted in the market than making an R1 beater. It's unlikely to make inroads into the full on sportsbike market as, whilst it provides a lot more grip for "normal" riders in everyday riding, it won't be capable of the same angles of lean and, at the extremes of lean may actually provide less grip. Max lean on the Niken in 45 degrees and on the R1 it's something like 60-65 degrees.

Where I think they've gone a little wrong is that they could have fitted bigger luggage to the GT version and actually made a properly capable tourer.

Interesting Gyp, still think it’s solving for a problem that’s not really there. I do like manufacturers that push the boundaries though, and the engineering on that front end is something else.

Weather's awful so it's farkle time.

De-catting, not a simple job on the Bonnie as Triumph build their frame around the engine - a long way away from the pre-unit days.

I find a coffee machine and some favourite music tracks help though.

Blimey, they don't make it easy do they?
I too spent some serious shed time yeaterday. lol
Pre units....wow....giving your age away now! I remember working on those. My mate used to make up plates to allow engine/gerabox mix and match. Great days.

I was going to say you should have bought a Scrambler as the cat is on the side, but after the nightmare I had separating the header pipe from the cat on Friday to fit the dresser bars, maybe not.

Do you think the decat will make much difference?

And are you fitting anything to fill or cover the hole?

The de-cat makes quite a difference, both to the flow of the exhaust gases and the sound too (I did it on my previous T120). The cat is replaced with an x-pipe, you can see it sat on the bike lift in the 1st photo.

Have you tried the booster plug on any of your triumphs ??? ( I often refer to it as the other type of plug by mistake).

Yes and on most of my bikes in fact.

I think booster plug and de-cat are the best you can do on the 'improvement' scale; re-mapping/K&N filter/modded air intake etc, are diminishing returns after that.

Fitted new bar end mirrors and went for a ride out in a rare gap in the weather. Stumbled across a classic car meet with a fantastic 1947 Triumph 1800 on show....

    A tale of 2 Triumphs....1947 vs. 2018..

Agreed on the booster; Have you tried a powercommander ?

    I've not tried the decat.

What is the impact, legally, of the decat, if any ?

What about emissions on the MOT ?

Emissions on bikes are not tested at an MOT
