Cheers Gyp, every day’s a school day. Knowing that the SE is a tourer, I’d wrongly assumed that the SX was one of the originals.

The Kawasaki naming convention doesn't make it easy, especially as there are both the H2 and the H2. It's a bit like Honda reusing the Silverwing name; originally for a faired CX500 and later for a scooter.

Agree with your comments on the Z650RS and Z900RS. And of course things are confused as there's a Z900 and Z900SE. Oh and Z900RS SE...

Some of the best roads I've Iver ridden are in Portugal. Beautiful twisting tarmac and very little traffic. I did the ACT this year. 750 miles off road and absolutely spectacular scenery in the mountains but not for the faint hearted.

Highly recommended so long as you're not to sensitive about your bike...

If I'm on a tour and the weather is variable I wear full technical gear (Rukka or Richa depending on how hot and wet it's likely to be) but if it's a day's riding (or going to be hot all tour) it's the Klim Marrakesh which is not only well vented but has decent protection and Rokker jeans...always with footwear that provides ankle/shin protection.

    Tuono woes

Been riding the Tuono for 6 weeks or so, had great fun and decided to get a custom map for the power commander that was fitted as the previous owner had just downloaded a generic one. Took a call from dyno guy that all was not well, strange noises towards end of set up session.

long story short, it’s done a big end, confirmed by horrendous noise above idle and a lovely metallic look to some oil I dropped from the filter.

2010 bike, last of the v twins, 14000 miles and serviced as per schedule, oil pressure fine on dyno run so just unlucky I guess, it would have happened sooner or later on the road.

Repair is not economical so picking up a used engine at the weekend for fitting and will take it from there!

Generally thought to be reliable motors. As you suggest- just unlucky?

OOC - how much does a used engine cost?

Speaking to AP workshops it’s not an issue apart from some 2008 bikes, checked my engine number and it’s 2008, so late registered on a 2010 plate..

Got a late 2009 engine advertised as 18k miles for £680, won’t get a gen2 one for much less and many are stripped, this one has throttle bodies, hoses, connectors etc. 30 day warranty so get it in sharpish and fingers crossed.

Ragging a Rotax on a Dyno is never a good thing.
    I was paranoid about mine.
If the motor is fitted with the 'long' oil filter, you need to be really careful to avoid oil starvation esp when the oil is hot.
Most dealers just throw in 10-40w oil, as opposed to recommended 15-50w...and then tell you there's no difference.....which there isn't of course. until the engine shits the bed.

Yep, bought a later one thinking should be more reliable as more development, but managed to get the year that has occasional "issues" and would imagine failure rate is one in very high number. Should be capable of taking a dyno run though regardless, googled the long v short filter debate and lost the will, hopefully the replacement engine is fine...

A place in Pool had a Superduke RR, I missed it by 30 minutes, I would have bout that just to look at, it would never have been ridden anywhere near what it could do

Very nice. I was very tempted by the KTM but they are just too tall, whereas the S1000R with the low seat and modded side stand is fine.

Yesterday I spent the day greenlaning around the Surrey Hills

Although I used to ride MX, I don't know where to start with green lanes - particularly because many lanes seem blocked or don't appear on OS maps.

I booked a guided tour via Henry Crew (youngest person to circumnavigate the world by bike). It cost £55

We met at Bocketts Farm and had 5 hours of awesome trails including river crossings, sand and chalk trails.

I managed to keep the bike upright the entire time but my buddy Luca dropped his 790 Adventure. Only a few scratches on him and the bike

    Thoroughly enjoyed it

I`ve made a mental note of that for wheni get it back on the road probably next year.

Went for an early boat this morning, all the usual north Essex places, know the bike pretty well now, the things I like, the things I don’t like and the things I’ve got to get used to

Fantastic day out, took my father in law and one of my mates, was in the No Limits box for a large part of the day and then spent some time with the McCams team and watched the last race in their garage with the riders families, was excellent, then back to the box to watch my mate Bob take 6th in the Tri Options Cup, getting grid access was the icing on the cake.

Yep, that was my old SP1. I chopped it in for the 1198S, and the dealers hadn't removed the plate when they filmed it. A little naughty, but I guess the film wouldn't have looked so slick if the Honda was wearing trade plates.

Got a call from the lad...

"Dad, I'm wanting to ride the bike at the weekend"

    "that sounds great"

"but the MOT is just about to run out"

    "that's not so great"

    "Daaad, would..."

"yes ok, I'll get it MOTed"

Done for another year. Couple of advisories (slight perishing of the front tyre and new chain needs tightening a little) but that's it.

    Expect rain at the weekend

After lots of miles on the GS, the R was feeling neglected. So took her out on a date to warm her fluids and she was a happy camper.

Back in 1995, I drove from Munich across the Alps down to Lake Garda.

The next day, I decided to drive around the lake and after a little while stopped to admire the view.

In my UK registered Rover 220, I was a bit of a novelty and got chatting with a German on a bike who commented I was a long way from home.

As we chatted I asked where he was off to and he explained he worked for BMW and was on one of his regular long run trials on the latest model.

I've never been a motorcyclist, but that did seem a rather idlyic job.

Gold FTW! No, they are forged ally. Glad that they are not magnesium as they are not suitable for road use imho, requiring x-raying after time being susceptible to moisture soak.

The crankcases on my Honda XL250 were magnesium, and they looked OK after 50 years. Probably due to them being about 15 mm thick and non load bearing :)
