    UEFA Champions League 2023/24

Going to be a strange Champions League not seeing my club involved, not even Thursday night football this year. So I doubt I’ll watch it so closely.

Some interesting draws and a real “Group of Death” for Newcastle.

    Group A
Bayern, Man Utd, Copenhagen & Galatasaray

    Group B
    Sevilla, Arsenal, PSV & Lens

    Group C
Napoli, Real Madrid, Braga & Union Berlin

    Group D
Benfica, Inter, Salzburg & Real Sociedad

    Group E
Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid, Lazio & Celtic

    Group F
    PSG, Dortmund, Milan & Newcastle

    Group G
Man City, Leipzig, Crvena Zvezda, Young Boys

    Group H
Barcelona, Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk & Antwerp

Arsenal got a good draw, and Arteta said we are winning it so that's one cup in the bag

Newcastle got a hard draw, Dortmund will be the key match, Milan are pretty average these days, PSG should win the group.

City Favourites for the tournament, Bayern 2nd Favourites, Madrid 3rd Favourites and Arsenal 4th favourites. That's with the bookies.

I can't see past Madrid or City winning it. I'd love to see Bayern win it though with Kane being top scorer in the competition.

I wouldn't disagree with that other to say that very often the best team does not win it, luck (both good and bad) has a big say once you get to the knockouts. Red card, keeper plays a blinder etc etc

Question on a hypothetical situation. As it stands PL clubs get 4 CL slots. Based on UEFA coefficient this season 3 extra CL slots are provided to best performing nations in UEFA club competitions so we could get another slot for 5 in total. The winner of the Europa League gets a CL slot, say Liverpool or Brighton win that and finish 6th. So that's 6 slots. And the winner of the CL gets a slot. Say Arsenal win that and finish 7th in the PL.

Am I right in saying we could have up to 7 teams in the CL next season if the above unfolded?

At what point are Newcastle going to realise they are basically playing Fulham away? Milan are terrible, it is just that Newcastle seem overawed

Absolutely couldn’t disagree more. Comfortable in possession and not taking unnecessary risks. I’d have coached this in exactly the same way. I think we’ll take Murphy off for Wilson with 20 mins left and try to nick a goal. Wouldn’t that make it the perfect away performance?

No because Milan are pony and if Newcastle had played properly they could have spanked them

Eddie Howe unbeaten in the Champions League.

Told you he was good enough at this level.

That was a tough watch to be fair. I'd imagine Dortmund and PSG will both take 6 points off Milan. But if Newcastle can win all 3 at St James' then that San Siro point may prove to be a point gained as opposed to 2 points dropped.

Are you Glen Hoddle in disguise?

On a separate note, why are Scottish fans booing earthquake victims? First at the England Scotland game now the minutes silence in the Celtic game seemed to have a few making a noise.
There was some crowd noise at the Etihad during the silence as well - don't know if it came from City fans or Red Star fans though

How biased against Man City are the commentary team?!!? Talking about getting 'punished at this level' as if City are rookies. McCoist was creaming his pants when Red Star scored

United had not started too badly but that goalkeeping mistake has clearly taken the wind out of their sails.

Arsenal pumping PSV. Hopefully we can take some players off and rest them for Spurs.

Shame for Ramsdale but Raya looks a much better keeper on the ball.

Gunners the best team of round 1 so far, aside from City I'd fancy our chances against anyone else however it is early days of course!

Haavertz played pretty well tonight I thought

Bellingham's the darling of Madrid again tonight, has any Englishman made an more impressive start to their career abroad when the big clubs come calling?

Future Ballon d'or winner right there...

Good game, Bayern deserved winners. Great to see two teams slogging it out. One team in transition, the other solid and strong. Big clubs nonetheless. History, emotion, tradition, always on view when teams like this meet

If you think he deliberately handled the ball there then I think you are sniffing something, he had no chance to move his arm out of the way...

Both were terrible, I'd love Arsenal to get either in the knock-outs, we'd pump them.

Want to avoid City until the final, Real will come good, the rest of the teams weren't impressive at all. Can't see past City although if we got them in a one-off game (ie the final) then you never know.

Reality check time. Arsenal aren’t getting to the final and aren’t beating City if they meet at any stage of the tournament. Real and Bayern beat Arsenal for me.

It doesn’t have to be deliberate hand ball. Most aren’t these days.

Ah, I didn’t realise you have no idea what the rules are.

Have a read buddy, you’ll realise it’s a clear penalty.

Yeah I don't expect us to get to the final and Bayern for sure have the players to hurt any team but they were a bit rubbish today. What I meant was playing City in a one off at Wembley would give Arsenal a better chance than over 2 legs however whilst everyone was watching Bayern/United tonight Arsenal pumped a team that was on the longest unbeaten run in Europe (26 games) and we looked pretty handy.

PSV looked very average and didn't offer anything after about 60mins. Best player was probably their full back Dest.

Want to avoid City until the final????

I dont see Arsenal going past the quarters, you beat a PSV side who arent scaring any of the elite in Europe, Munich would beat Arsenal for me,

the 4-3 loss feels like a moral victory for me take away the gk howler, and the stupid handball rule and we won 3-2

No way would last night's Munich have beaten Arsenal.

Re getting past the quarters well if we avoid City (and maybe Madrid) I'd fancy our chances against any of the others. We are talking about the 2nd best team in the best league in the world.

I'm guessing that would be the same stupid handball rule that gifted you a penalty against Man City in the FA Cup Final? :)

Good performance from Arsenal, but PSV are pretty average. CL is a lot of luck, if we get a easy draw we could make the semis, but once we come up against City, Bayern, Real, I can see us struggling over 2 legs. Good to be back in the CL and winning matches.
