    Sub £4K chronograph

I’m thinking of adding a chronograph watch back into the collection and am quite keen on the IWC petit prince Pilot, but have doubts with it being 43mm diameter and quite thick. Anything else worth having a look at?

  2. #2
Maybe the Sinn 358 pilots chronograph or th 757 but that's a bit chunkier.

A Zenith El Primero would be my first choice.

If you don't mind the manual wind then can't go wrong with a Speedy

Maybe a preowned Zenith Heritage 146? Maybe tight for the budget but worth every penny.

Do you want new, newish or old? There's a very nice Mk2 Speedy Racing on SC or a new one in the sale in Burrells in Winchester for £3k or so. That Zenith on SC is very nice but for £4k you could get a nice Heuer Autavia Viceroy. If a Speedy can you get close to a Tuesday?

Ideally second hand, a few years old. I’m a bit of a flipper so don’t want to loose crazy money when the inevitable happens and I move it on. Don’t buy into the speedy Tuesday hype so will stick to the regular one. What’s the going rate for a normal speedy second hand?

I thought there is one on SC right now?

Speedy is a great choice and you won’t go wrong with this one

    https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.p...ht=Speedmaster

Ive bought plenty of watches from Dave over the years and when he says mint, he means mint. And at a grand less than retail and you still have £1500 to play with.

iconic watch, easy resale should you not bond and so versatile strap wise it can feel like a new watch every week. Bracelet, NATO, leather etc etc

    Totally agree

The Speedmaster is an iconic watch and perfect size

I reckon you’ll struggle to beat this one. I’ve had speedies and navitimers, but there is something about this one. In my opinion it has a perfect look, strong heritage, limited edition, water resistant, and dresses up or down. Something like £6.5k new but very lightly used = sub £4k. Don’t look anywhere else.

Now that’s a good looking chrono and perhaps, dare I say it, not as common as a Speedy?

    Sinn Arktis :)

Personally I'd have that Zenith on SC, but it's a personal favourite of mine.

Pre-owned this one can be had for a lot less than 4K and is incredibly well made, 600m WR too with excellent lume.
Any Zenith El Primero would also be a great choice.

  24. #24
Some interesting watches in the thread, some interesting suggestions.

shalako's Omega is an amazing watch, but try before you buy - it's a thickie.

No offence, of course, but the PVD Tudor looks a mess to my eyes. Had the badge had said Invicta, others would agree. (And if challenged, I'll rouse myself to explain why.) The Zenith is nice, but very flat - very dull. It reminds me of Damasko chronographs in that it's a very immediate watch - no hidden depths, no surprises. Wear it for an hour and you'll have seen all it has to offer.

May I suggest the Longines Avigation Big Eye? A budget buster, and a damn fine watch.

    How about Tudor BB chrono?
The best watch I've tried at last year Basel.
200m WR, Breitling B01 with 70h reserve inside, goes great on bracelet/leather/nato, I see no reason not to put even rubber on it.
Second hand are under 3k if not mistaken.

Zenith El Primero would be my choice all day long. Brand new from an AD would be over £5.5k, but grey dealers will probably be slightly over £4k. Second hand these can probably be had for sub £4k.

  27. #27
I would vote for the Longines Big Eye - great value watch.

Off the wall but how about £2k Field Engineer by Marine Chronometer Co and with 4year superb warranty. Plus a second hand Omega?

Buy x 2 - firstly 2nd hand Speedmaster at 2k. Get it on a bracelet and then have fun with a variety of straps. Then either a 2nd hand Tudor heritage Chrono (blue dial) or a Tag monoco

You'll be able to get into vintage Speedmaster Pro with this budget, a 145.022.71T with step dial will be in this range and if you do flip chances are you'll come out on top if purchased wisley..

Adversary - that Tudor is nice, but damn that hour hand would obscure the minute counter (only the one damn reason for owning a chronograph) for about 6 minutes every hour. I mean, I like it, but I wouldn't own many things that wouldbe unusable for 10% of the time I owned it. Maybe SCUBA gear? A parachute?

Some interesting suggestions, so thanks for the input. So initial questions on the Omega speedmaster moonwatch...how big is it? I’m reading that it’s 42mm...I thought they did a smaller one? How thick is the case? Are all these models manual wind...what is the power reserve? Is the movement in-house?How much are these new retail. How does it wear on the wrist. I’ve got a Pam392 (which will be going if I find a chronograph I like) and is fine on my smallish wrists, how does the Omega feel in comparison?

    Sorry for all the questions.

    Cheers
    Mike

I find that I use Chronos for timing things in the seconds, not minutes, but different people have different requirements

I was looking for something similar recently, ended up with a Field Engineer which has it's own thread.

Others that were on my list
    Sinn 103 TI Testaf
Bremont Alt1-P2 or another Bremont alt, but maybe not if you're a flipper.
Laco Kiel if you fancy something similar to the IWC.
Muhle Glasshutte Lunova or similar to the IWC but thinner the Terrasport chrono
I was really keen on the Sinn EZM10 but not sure about size so would want to try it on first. Not sure you'd find a used one.

Surely it’s got to be the Speedmaster pro. Can’t even see this being a debate.

Go used and you’ve got 2k for something else.

    Absolute no brainer.

    Not necessarily though.

I have the Pro and find it wears big at 42mm. I think the FOIS is around 40mm and wish I'd have gone for that now. I never wear the bracelet either so another win for the FOIS.

So, to clarify, do you still have the Pro in the collection or has it gone?

Agree regarding the FOIS, prefer it to the normal Pro and felt better on the wrist when I tried them both. Bit harder to read the time though, not quite as clear due to the different hands.

If you don’t have a Speedmaster anymore perhaps a Reduced is another option? Auto movement rather than manual wind and 38mm I believe.

I still have the Pro, was wearing it when my son was born so can't be sold, whether I think it's too big or not!

Has to be a Speedy Pro. Has to be.

  47. #47
    Speedy pro is so predictable

Zenith El Primero much better shout given auto movement, lovely AR crystal and better presence having owned both.

Breitling navitimer is also a lovely watch especially a vintage one

I really love the IWC petit prince chrono and have tried it on several times (wanting to buy one ) but it’s just too big for my 6.5 inch wrists , the watch wears big as not only is it 43mm but it’s also very thick at 15.5mm.

As other have said try the speedmaster moon watch, It’s a great watch.

Also check out this Zenith el premerio it’s a beautiful watch and wears well on a slim wrist .
