    Help needed : 20th anniversary :)

    Hi,

I was looking at buying a good bottle of something for the missus as part of our 20th anniversary.
I am not a drinker as such - though she likes wine, champagne, a bit of ginit seems as well.

Can anyone recommend anything which has a 20 year vintage ? And if not any good recommendations in general for a bottle of something that you have found to be fantastic ?

    cheers

    matt

The obvious answer is a bottle of 20 year old vintage port. Around 25 to 30 quid will get you a decent bottle.

^Port would be a good choice.

You could also consider some armagnac.

I much prefer the Armagnac suggestion but it's worth remembering that some vintage ports are better than others and it typically varies from year to year.

    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

If you want something a bit special, and have reasonably deep pockets...

1998 was a particularly good vintage in Champagne, and a number of houses have done/do a new release of these wines. One of the best ways (certainly not the cheapest) to buy vintage Champagne is directly from the house, where they have aged the wine "on the lees" (yeast remnants) and disgorge to prepare them for sale many years later.

But, what I would buy from 1998 is a Pfalz Riesling. Older Riesling is beautiful wine, ages gracefully, and is available for reasonable money.

Personally I'd go for a bottle of bubbly which is more suitable for the occasion imo. If you decide to go for a vintage stuff I'd suggest to buy a bottle of NV of the same brand to fully appreciate the taste difference and do a mini side by side testing thing which could be fun.

As suggested and budget permitting 1998 Dompi and Krug would be a fantastic present and bubbly to remember, I'd also suggest Bollinger RD 1998 if you could source a loose bottle from a reputable dealer.

That fails, Bollinger Grande Annee 2005 is a fantastic drop available for basically newt, so a champaign breakfast to start the day with and then you can piss the rest of the money in a Michelin starred eatery which will work out roughly the same money plus minus as a bottle of fine vintage stuff and will be thing to remember.
