    How to Spend It

Just wondering which members read this carefully (sadly,I am not one of them).

A nice gently socialist article as you'd expect from The Guardian.

I occasionally browse How to Send It (and have featured in it in my blogging role) and agree that it has to be taken with a slight pinch of salt. A similar print mag - The Rake - is also one to not take too seriously but is an entertaining read.

While both HTSI and The Rake focus on real quality the overwhelming impression I get is that the higher the income the lower the standards of taste. Being super-rich offers opportunities to patronise real artists and crafts people, but most buy horrid overpriced junk instead [rant over].

Sadly I am far from the 1% but I would probably enjoy a good read of this just for the dreams!

Judging by some of the watches I've seen round here somebody must be close to that 1% club!

That's kind thanks - it's be too easy to take life too seriously which is why I think there's a place for HTSI etc if they're taken with a pinch of salt! I suspect most of the readership can only dream but it's quite possible to find a genuine style without paying over the odds.

I often wonder if How to Spend It is satire. Some of it is absolutely hilarious or obscene. It's sent up nicely by the Wry Society column in the supplement itself.

Methinks the 1% is a bit off the mark more like the 0.1%

There aren't that many Sunseeker owners around IIRC

Apparently earning more than $34,000 a year puts you in the 1% globally. I think it is more like £150k in the UK, and that doesn’t account for people who are wealthy but not working.

I like magazines like this, reading them is escapism. It’s as much fun being horrified by the price of a bad taste item as it is musing on whether you would prioritise range or comfort in your choice of private jet.

Someone once said to me "the only really happy boat owner is the man who has just sold it "

I once put the annual costs into a spreadsheet for mine - that was a shock !!!

Seems reasonable - My dive club owns a RHIB, we spend a fortune and untold hours on it and it hardly ever goes in the water!

I was always told if it floats, flies or fornicates, rent it. It's cheaper.
