What vintage chronograph to go with a classic car? :-)

What vintage chronograph to go with a classic car? :-)

I’m fortunate to own a lovely red 1950s Italian classic car. It has a beautiful wooden Nardi wheel and I’ve always thought I should have a vintage chronograph to complete the look.

    I don’t want to spend a packet, so £3,500 max I think.

I quite like the idea of a black or salmon face and the AP Jules Chronographs looks a lovely option but it is a bit dear: https://www.chrono24.co.uk/audemarsp...-id8273911.htm None of sales in Sales Corner either that I can see.

I would like to stick with a leather stap, not cloth.

The AP is a relatively new looking watch, but I’d be quite happy to consider something with a patina, etc. I have quite small wrists, so I could wear a 35/36mm watch which means the lovely older stuff is open to me as well.

Would be very happy to see some links and have some discussion. I don’t know much about chronographs so very happy to learn more.

    Any suggestions?

I’d go with a Heuer Carrera..loads of variants, but I’d guess you’d get something nice within budget.

I'd go for a Heuer Carrera reissue. You could also find an Autavia 1163 Viceroy for that but they are 42mm.

You could, however, save a lot of money and find a good Seiko Bullhead:

    Or maybe a Speedy Mk2:

    Heuer Montreal?

    Or something like this:

Something about a 2-subdial chrono at 3 and 9 is so classic to me.

Logic dictates that the watch should be a similar age to the car, so that rules out anything post 1959 and choice will be limited.

A sensible reply and that would be a fun piece of research and purchase. Perhaps we can "cheat" a bit and move into the 1960s and maybe even the early 70s?

Personally I’d look for a really nice Montreal, or perhaps a Mk II speedy (vintage, rather than reissue).

How about a vintage Roamer Mustang Electronic, particularly if its a German classic...or indeed something like a DS.

Italian 1959, I'm guessing an Alfa spider or one of those very pricey Ferrari's.

I googled 'red vintage chronograph' and this popped up as looking suitably 1959-ish and with a similar lightweight construction look to the cars.

    Something like this:

Enicar Sherpa or Jet Graph would fit the bill but I m not sure what prices they currently command. Alternatively a Heuer Autavia re-issue, which can be had within budget.

What vintage chronograph to go with a classic car? :-)

Given it’s a classic Italian car, what about an Everhard Tazio Nuvolari?

If it really is a Fiat, look no further than the Gerard Perregaux edition for long service at Fiat, the model code 49480

I think they look rather nice

    Several on Chrono24

The OP already gave a pretty big clue in this other thread yesterday:

    https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.p...CH-not-the-car!

So it's possibly a Lancia Aurelia B24 spider, like this:

Universal Geneve Compax? Here's a period one on Chrono24 that fits your criteria:

    https://www.chrono24.com/universalge...-id8586748.htm

They also did some vintage looking re-issues in the 1990s which can be picked up for a reasonable price, for example this black dialled one here:

I think this is a great choice, classic vintagesque styling would go great with a fifties classic car.

Well, he’s studiously ignored the question each time, so he clearly ain’t sayin’. An Aurelia crossed my mind too - certainly fits the era (I think they stopped making those in around 1958). Could be a coupé model too. Either way, nice car.

Girard Perregaux would fit the bill. They make some superb looking chrono’s, both genuine vintage or in their modern “vintage” series. Great quality for sensible money (pre-owned).

Here’s my 1976 Olimpico as an example...

Very nice looking GP there too. I will look into them as well.

Just came across this, which I think I like the look of (though not sure about the numerals?) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STUNNING-....c100040.m2060 Any thoughts on this chrono? Looks a little pricey for what it is?

Thank you. Now just to find a "matching" chronograph. My car is red...

Would have been happy with this, but can't locate one.

Your budget is quite tight but if you wanted new you could get the Junghans Meister Telemeter or the Longines 1973 reissue.
Or I found thus omega which would go quite well with your car.
