    1958 Rolex GMT-Master Bakelite

This one's a bit special, for the rare Bakelite bezel insert :

    Under UV light :

The hour and minute hands have been replaced and the dial, while original, has had relumed indices. Despite that, I find it one of the most charming, visually attractive and interesting vintage Rolex.

"I must be dreaming," as Connery said.

Mistakenly thought I could buy one of these as it’s a birth year for me, that was a few years ago, but don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

    Beautiful.

It would be interesting to see that alongside the current version to see how tastes have changed.

Yes - this please if possible

I once read that Bakelite is really hard to make and work with if you don’t have special kit, which is why Breitling uses it for watch boxes as it’s hard to fake. I wonder if Rolex used it for a similar reason, or simply because it represented technological advancement at that time.

    Either way, really cool piece!

Always lovely to see the underrepresented Coke bezel, and even more so in such a rare type.

I would not care I would wear that dam my birth year when that watch was made. What I am hoping is the radiation and radon gas scare will make the prices go down so vintage watches can be affordable again for us who don't care what type of lume on the dials.

I’ve always wondered if a white sweep seconds hand was a 6542 original or something that was put on them during a service visit to Rolex. It’s highly functional and stands out.

The "Pussy Galore" promotional shot would be for 1964's "Goldfinger" and clearly shows a white seconds hand on that 6542.

    Original.

Wow, that bezel is incredible. You don't see many of those in that condition.

    Lovely watch.

It is said that Bakelite is the only substance on Earth more fragile than Elton John in a Hall of Mirrors.

    😂😂. Must remember that one.

Lovely looking thing (the Rolex, not Elton John).

I love the fact that the Bakelite insert colour doesn't seen to suffer the same colour degradation as the metal inserts. I bet that colour isn't that different to when the Watch was new.

Indeed; look at Ms. Blackman's in the photo.

Interesting to see the GMT hand extending beyond the minute track. A few folk (including me) raised eyebrows at the length of the GMT hand in the Tudor BB GMT and so it is great to see the historical precedent that perhaps teed up that design decision.

p.s. Lovely watch by the way.

When Felix Leiter warned James Bond about wearing a watch with radium in Thunderball (1961), it is assumed 'the watch company' Ian Fleming was referring to was Rolex and the 'air-pilot's watch' was the GMT Master.

'You're still wearing that old wristwatch of yours with the big phosphorous numerals....Put your watch right up against the counter. See! The sweephand is getting all excited. Move your hand away and it loses interest. It's those phosphorous numerals of yours. Remember the other day one of the watch companies withdrew an air-pilot's watch from the market because the Atomic Energy people got fussy? Same thing. They thought this particular pilot's watch, with the big phosphorous numerals, was giving off too much radiation to be good for the wearer.'

If it's not too greedy/rude, would it be possible to see a couple?

I am not sure I have the designations 100% correct, but it would be lovely to see the 6542, 1675, 16750 and 116710 in a group shot, in release date order. It really would be fascinating to see how the case shape, dimensions and dial proportions have developed, for example with regard to the earlier comment about the length of the GMT hand.

If this is too much, perhaps just the 6542 and the 116710?

    Thank you!

Me too, the Mk II homage to the 6542 retained that smaller GMT hand's indicator. Not hard to see at night with the lume shining as it's the only thing outside of the perimeter of hour markers. :) https://imgur.com/R5dF2bv

My understanding is that the longer/smaller 24h hand was used on early 1675s until replaced with the bigger indicator that was used for a couple of decades.

Apparently I can't link an IMG tag from my domain. Post count too low, I wager. http://chromejob.com/rltforum/projec...sad_detail.jpg

Rare watch made even rarer by its Original Bezel. So many cracked and were replaced.

    A lovely watch indeed

Part of the collection or something going in the shop window?
