    Ghetto Cold Brew coffee advice

    Available items

X1 bag columbian coffee , freshly coarse ground.
X9 plastic bottles of drinking water with screwtop lids
    X1 fridge.
X1 tube super glue. (Locktite cyanoacrylate)

Put coffee in empty bottle , fill bottle up with clean water. Put in fridge overnight.

Take another bottle , glue the two lids together top sides , use needle /swiss army knife to punch many small holes through both lids .

Screw glued seive caps onto bottle with coffee, screw empty bottle on top , invert after 10 hours and let cold brewed coffee filter through caps into empty bottle.

Opinions (and yeah I could have bought a cafetierre but it was 25quid.).

    Discuss???
    Improvements?

Would look for a cheaper cafetiere in Tesco or Asda. But I'd be interested to know how it turns out, certainly.

This will produce the bitterest most under-extracted coffee known to man.

Look forward to the taste test! Full marks for innovation though.

Why? Cold brewed coffee seems really easy to make and the ones I've had tasted extremely smooth.

The grind was done specifically with cold brew in mind.

Ah...no tesco or asda here my friend . I'm in Mumbai. Although to be fair Amazon do deliver to the hotel.

I also have a juice cup with a big straw if that makes any other more efficient options over the two water bottle technique ( actually I have a steel water bottle and cup here some place too).

Many and myself included don't believe the best flavours of a given coffee can be fully extracted using cold water, better option imo would be to extract using a hot water method (cafetière, drip, espresso etc) and then cool rapidly to make a cold coffee drink.

How is the air going to escape from the lower bottle through the coffee grounds resting on the glued together caps?

I think that both bottles will need a vent. The lower one to release air and the upper one to admit it.

Can you buy filter papers and a plastic funnel (any type will do if the size is right)?

I like to have cold coffee drinks when I'm out in the week. Mrs buys me ready made ones in the weekly shop. I've often thought about making up my own but I would probably use hot instant or filter then let cool.

You need a 7:1 water/grounds brew ratio and only need to brew overnight (6-8hrs). That’s what a friend of mine recommends, he was head roaster at Monmouth and now has his own roastery/cafe.
I would try and drip slowly into a filter cone rather than immersion as that will keep it from being overbrewed and muddy.

    Lol at the cold instant

Well actually it seems to have been quite successful . I filtered it through a clean face cloth and then some paper towels. I did consider an old sock but thought better of it,

I only got about half a bottle out of it even though I’d used a full 500ml bottle of water in about a 1:4 ratio. I didn’t think it wise to squeeze the grains so I assume thats where the bulk of the lost liquid ended up.

Small sip and it seems very good and smooth. Stuck it in the fridge for later.

I think a cafetierre would make the whole process easier and cleaner.

Just returned and have sampled a bit if the brew and I have to say its pretty damn good.

Given how it was prepared I’m quite pleased with myself . Now I need to scale it up as I only ended up with 250ml from a 500ml bottle of water .

I was expecting it to take a bit of watering down but it tastes great as it is. I’ll be getting myself a cafetierre and some filter papers rather than the face cloth and toilet paper method I employed.

Thanks for all the encouragement 👍

I must be missing something. Why do you need a cafetière please?

Its bound to be a lot easier and cleaner than pouring it through a face cloth.

Sure, but you said you were after "a cafetierre and some filter papers". I would have thought that a funnel and any old jug/bottle would do the same job, as in:

OK, I'll admit that I don't really like cafetières...ending up with a jug full of grounds that may block the sink isn't my idea of fun. I much prefer a straight filter so that I end up with the grounds in a paper cone that goes straight into the compost bin.

Easy to use and clean. Wonderful range of flavours come through from cold brewed coffee.

This coffee is excellent for cold brew. IMHO

I also picked a Hario. Seems to work well. Got a red one from Amazon Warehouse for £10.56. Bargain compared to the normal prices.

Another hario user. Makes very nice cold brew, although if you leave it too long to brew it can get a bit bitter. I find loading it up in the evening it's really nice in the morning

Probably a dumb question: what's the benefit of cold brewing over making it normally and chilling it?

Its easier when you live in a hotel room.
I can get nasty instant or even filter coffee whenever I want.

However I wanted something easy and good.

Also it does taste less acidic to me and the higher caffiene level is good. (Notjing wrong with caffiene in my book).

Its goid just opening the fridge and pouring out a good clean tasting coffee .. esoecially when its 40plus outside.

Fair enough! I really like the idea of nice coffee gently infusing for a few hours. Might give it a try!

Just started drinking cold brew this last couple of weeks, and I prefer it over hot coffee, especially sugar free.
