    Goodwood Festival of Speed

Starts Thursday. So which watch? Instead of Chronos, you could argue that you want the equivalent of a great sports car.
So, great precision, no frills, top engineering, big power reserve, classic looks.
The nearest I have is this....but there will be better.

Where this does score is in the 100 hours power reserve from a single barrel. So some serious 'performance' engineering, along with very fine precision. And, for once, no need to worry about water resistance. No lakes to fall into at Goodwood.

Surely a Chrono is needed though and the Speedy Pro seems obvious

I’m thinking more along the lines of a vintage Heuer!

I started by thinking of a Chrono, and as this is my only one.....
But people don't 'time' races these days do they? A good watch could just echo the engineering skill and sheer performance of a great sports car design.
Watches and cars have always had a sympathetic link; many watch guys are also car guys. But does it have to be a Chrono?

Looks like it's going to rain so I'll wear one of my watches that doesn't mind getting wet.

I'm not sure why I'd wear anything different to what I'd be wearing anyway.

I live about a mile from Goodwood; no sign of rain, and the forecast says plenty of warm days to come.

I’m there on Sunday, wearing my very understated Rolex Explorer 214270, I love this watch and mostly because it’s so discreet but laden with class.

    Going on Friday wearing this:

IWC are in their fourth year as Official timing partner of Goodwood members meetings and David Coulthard will be launching the new IWC Schaffhausen historic racing team.

Last year was really good because the weather held out. Hopefully will be the same this year!

We're going Friday too. That's rather a nice IWC. Very tasty shade of blue.
Should be a great day; all those fantastic cars.

Haven’t got a photo to hand but it’ll be my vintage Heuer as always. Bought it from the event and it’s been with me most years

We went yesterday; really good, as you'd expect. Didn't see many interesting watches, but then I wasn't really looking. Too many fascinating cars.
It is a good day out. Oddly enough, if we could walk across the fields, it would only be ten minutes from where we live.

The Cartier area was brilliant, a collection of rare and quite fabulous old cars. You'd not see them anywhere else. Well done, Cartier.

Another cracking Festival of Speed (I refuse to call it ‘FOS’).
I’ve been several times and if you’re a Petrolhead it is absolutely a must-do.
Always plenty to see and do, we spend the full Four Days there and still don’t get round everything, but then we do spend time relaxing and having a Cold One, or even Two.
Lots of Wrist Candy too, saw plenty of Tag, Breitling, a couple of Audemar Piguet and lots of Rolex. Mostly Subs, but a couple of Deepseas and TT Daytona.
Despite my post on another thread I saw 4x Monacos.
    (2x ‘Originals’ and 2x Re-issues).
A few Speedies, but with Vendors not on Wrists
Speaking of which, there was a Trader with some vintage and modern pieces and One of the Auction Houses with some display pieces.
Tag Heuer used to be the official timekeeper and used to make quite a splash at the event.
Now it’s Mont Blanc, who’s Sales Area I fell upon accidentally, hidden away with very little fanfare.
Some good Watch Shops in Chichester too, if you’re in the area for a few days including an independant Rolex/Tudor AD.
(And no, they didn’t have any SS Sports or BB GMT/58s !

The Chichester Rolex shop, Austens, put out a platinum Day Date, complete with price, in the hope some wandering rich guy bought it on impulse. It's still there.....
Many people who like watches also enjoy cars, which is why Goodwood is such a treat. As for 'greed'...the vast majority go to have a look, not to buy exotic motor cars. It's just a nice day out.

Has it gone downhill a bit?

I've only ever been on a Saturday and in the past, it's been a pleasure to watch the old Gruppe B rockets boot it up the course.

I keep meaning to do the Sunday but life seems to get in the way.

Indeed - I suppose the food stalls costs are almost as eye watering as the value of some of the cars, but you can always take a picnic (or if you get lucky Mazda will feed and water you all day - I won a competition on the Goodwood website a couple of years ago and drove up the hill behind Lord March in an MX5 on the thursday!).

For a family, I guess it's an expensive weekend out, but so much better value than a grandstand ticket for the British GP, for example!

I've not been for a few years now, but it's always a sheer joy to be standing inches away from epic motors from various periods - Ickx and Bell's 962, Paul Newman's 935, the '88 LM winning XJR-9, James Hunt's championship McLaren, chain driven GP cars, Tony Pond's TR7 V8, F40s, Paganis, classic one-off Ferrari specials - If you like historic cars (or the history of motorsport) then it's something to do now and then!

I like the Thursday, myself, always quieter (although busier by the year) and whilst none of the historic stuff goes up the hill, you get plenty of opportunities to look around it with a bit more space and time!

I watched it on YouTube this year

Its definitely more commercial than the Revival but it what it is. I've been a few times and enjoyed it,as has my son,but I do like the Revival more because it has a much less commercial feel and more relaxed atmosphere.

Why? Is it because you use up all your capital letters elsewhere?

    Thanks, V.

I think I'll take my son to the Revival next time.

Pack a cool bag and it’s good value. Wander in with nowt but a handful of £££ and it’s very easy to leave a lot of it in there.
P.S. Thursday was a proper Festival Day this year, no Moving Motor show but still less of a crowd. Saturday’s usually the busiest day.
I’d do the Revival too, if I could think of a way of working less and earning more.

Went for the first time in 10 years or so, and wow how big is the event now. Very very commercialised.

For a petrolhead it was a great experience, and highlight was seeing Steve McQueen's Mustang from Bullitt.

If I am honest, I do prefer the Revival :)

Good to give the 1133b an airing also.

+1......... or a cool 60s Omega Seamaster Deville chrono. There’s something v. appealing about these Omegas.......apart from the prices thesedays.

Interesting - I'll be aware of that if I go in the future.

The Revival is a great event, too, but very different - I don't think it's a case of either/or (except, possibly, in terms of cost).
