I used to have one and they are quite good but nowadays I use one of these. Also
Their baseball caps are quite good value.

tilley hat did help me survive a rather nasty bonknon the head from a boom . The top is padded quite will (like a trainer) for that reason. It does work.

My beat up old Tilley is getting on for nearly twenty years old. Now spends most of its life in the boot of the car ready for emergencies.

It's a shame that it seems the site won't even let you see the products unless you give up your details to be used for marketing. I'm out, as the saying goes.

With you on that one. My 15 plus year old Tilly is starting to get frayed around the rim so I thought I'd go and have a look at the offer but no....

Out of interest, what kind of emergency would require you to wear a hat?

I tend to wear Akubras all the time, of one sort or another and have for years so I suppose I'm fairly OK for hats at the moment but would probably have a go if the site didn't want me to sign up for a lifetime of spam.....

Say for example you break down on the motorway. It's a hot day. There is no shade. Appropriate head gear could save you from dehydration and then staggering into the path of an oncoming juggernaut.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

Perhaps the kind of emergency that may occur when you pass middle age and still don't have anything to adorn your car's rear parcel shelf?

For style and sartorial elegance you can't beat a Tarp hat, as evidenced by this handsome young chap.

I have to say that I'm rather more comfortable with the prospect of being run down by a juggernaut than being recognised wearing a Tilley hat,

I left my T3 at the top of a hill, and didn’t realise until a mile and a half later. There was no way I was cycling back up the hill on a fully loaded touring bike to get it, despite there being a £20 note stashed in the secret pocket along with a card with my name and number on it. If luck was with me the hat and I would be re-united. We weren’t.

Later I recounted the tale, and it was suggested I contacted Tilley. I did, explained my forgetfulness and idleness. As I was able to prove that I had bought it in the previous two years they offered to replace it at half price, but I had to have a T3. Having found the T3 too warm for summer biking, but needing some shade for my eyes I would have bought the lightweight version LTM3? at a lesser discount. I now wear a Weird Fish baseball hat, bought because it was cheap, but it does the job well enough to buy a second.

Tilley make great hats. Just make sure you get the model and size right. An eighth of an inch makes all the difference.

wearing a balaclava as well will considerably diminish any chances of being recognised . hth. dave

Tilley - one of Canada’s main contributions to civilisation. Bought mine in Victoria BC and the guy in the shop sized it and set it up properly. As has already been said, getting the size right is important.
Not the most glamorous headwear but, with a history of melanoma, I’d prefer not to have any more of my bonce cut off....

They look great! I’d like to try one. Do they vent and shed water like a Tilley? Are they crushable and comfy?

Tarp hats are crushable, not over waterproof but I Nikwax mine every year.

They have the benefit of looking equally stupid with all styles of attire, from shorts and string vest to dinner suit.

They complement perfectly a patinated bronze watch and Rayban Aviators that are losing their gold plating.

The interior of the hat has an interesting script that you can allow amazed onlookers to read following their question "where the f**k did you get that hat!".

I am very fond of mine and call it Enrico.

I refer to the Beanie version; I have also the more sartorially acceptable Tilley-style version that I call Henry. That is not crushable.

I also have the baseball cap; this too is not crushable; I have no name for this as it is usually sported by my present wife, and she would think I was referring to her.

As you may gather I am enamoured of these hats; they match perfectly the tarpaulin that I use on my car trailer.

I have been carrying these with me on film shoots for years . I’m also in the habit of buying them for colleagues as gifts.

I would say they are crushable but over time the rims can bend (mine usually hangs off the back of my rucksac).

Thats not to say they still don’t look decent even when banged up.

Mine usually get a coating of rain guard and function well in monsoons.

Recommend the chin strap lanyard if you are in windy conditions and I prefer the heavily patched versions for character. Note that you can buy the stopper toggles off Amazon for considerably less .

Get the right size . I don’t consider myself a big head and I’m a medium. Everyone else I’ve gotten hats has been small including grown men.
