    Alternatives to the usuals

Like many I’m mostly drawn to Rolex and being honest having owned maybe 10 or so in the past including my current hulk and gmt2c I have never been disappointed. The current faff in actually getting your hands on one at retail has put me off a little . What do folks see as the best quality watches in the mid range that tend to be a little overlooked by joe soap ? Some of the gps maybe ? Something else? Preferably something that’s reasonable value second hand !

    Alternatives to the usuals

Second hand, Zenith, the ones with the El Primero movement. And Grand Seiko.
Also, remember that superb watches like the Rolex OP/ Explorer/ Milgaus and Datejust are available. I see them as good as the 'sports' stuff. Just less fashionable.
Me.....probably a Zenith El Primero-based Chrono at 40% below retail.

Breguet Type XX Aeronavale (not my photo)

Gorgeous chronograph by a top-tier brand, and great value on the pre-owned market

I met Rob for a coffee on Thursday and have to say after wearing his I would have a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 5015-1130-52 in a heartbeat, oozes quality and wears way smaller than its 45mm would suggest. Would have one over a Sub.

    Chopard, particularly the LUC ones.

    Ulysse Nardin.

    Some Eberhards.

    Some Corums.

They aren't for the people who worry about residuals on a daily basis,though...

    Another vote for Zenith EP

Although, Chronoswiss also have some nice, interesting pieces, if residuals not an issue...

    40th anniversary 1969 Re-issue of El Primero.
This is what they call the New Vintage 1969 & this is the first series "The Originals".
I believe there was a limited run of 500 in each design.

Some good info in this thread & here

How about a Piaget Polo S. Super movements in them and can be had for a pretty reasonable price second hand. There is at least one owner on the forum.

I feel like I was in similar boat as you flipped a lot of Rolexes both 5 and 6 digit, but every time I ventured into the unknown I ended up telling myself should have just sticked to Rolex. Maybe I was just unlucky but none of the JLC were perfect, the Panerai had issues too and at end I just thought why bother.

I keep seeing photos of this watch I am convinced I am going to buy one day.

Personally I would rather have any other good watch than a Rolex particularly a IWC portugeiser or one of the other classic watches they make.

What I don’t understand is why someone hasn’t bought that Heuer viceroy.
it stands head and shoulders above any recent release,in looks, history, value and it has a certain something you can’t define.

Must admit that I'm in the camp of reverting to Rolex all the time. I've had loads of different brands and when I've consolidated it's always back to Rolex.

In the last year or so Panerai has joined the stable and I can see it being Panerai and Rolex in perpetuity. The two OP had are all you need (or not)...

Another one for the zenith EP. I love this watch and for the money it can be had for it’s a bargain.

Certainly not a mid range brand but as the invisibility of any Sports Rolex within the AD network at present and with Grey and secondhand dealers charging a minimum of 30% mark up even on years old models from the Hulks to GMT etc. Pre owned Audemars are starting to come into range.

With brand new Hulks and BlNR costing close to £10k in the secondary market you have to question value for money on spending such a mark up over the original RRP on what is a £6k watch and was astounded to see WF charging above RRP for Explorers, Milgauss and Yachtmasters but with preowned Audemars offshore models ranging from £11-14k, they do start to look a much better alternative to an overpriced steel Rolex.

I have a Panerai as well just a 510 but I really do like it and it’s a nice contrast from the Rolexes

also so have an iwc Portuguese Chrono so it’s a nicely rounded little collection which is perhaps why I’m looking for what else to get rather than it jumping out at me

I have the plain gmt ceramic which I prefer to the blnr being honest !

anyway blnr is hardly not one of the usual suspects :)

I was using it in the ‘usual suspect’ category - as a useful comparison (on price) for an FF

If you like Rolex sports then how about the Planet Ocean or the new datejust 41 ?

The perfect pair in my opinion; Portuguese (my fav watch) and a Roex sub/gmt

    Nomos Tangente Neomatik 39 silvercut

  41. #41
Nomos! Innovate in-house movements, cool styling and totally under the radar. But when someone spots it and mentions it, you know you have a great conversation coming

  42. #42
I'd echo the views on the El Primero. It's hard to say no to an iconic movement cased in 18ct gold for a little over £3k:

Yeah agreed: I had a Nomos Orion 38 Weiss. Great watch with lovely movement showing through caseback - but got bored of the bland styling (well made though it is). But the Tangente shown above is beautiful - If I had gone for that I might still have a Nomos.

Anyone non-German spotting that on your wrist, you know they really have an interest in watches.
