We still lack that magic free kick taker. Not Trippier (his corners were good though). Ashley young was redundant.

It was fine the performance for Game 1. A few things though - Young was very poor; against better opposition our defending needs to be better; Alli was injured and should have been subbed at half time.

I raised before how I felt we lacked the quality to finish in front of goal (bar Kane) to progress far in this tournament and not seen anything to suggest otherwise. This tournament has been characterised by a LOT of goals which have been corners, penalties, free kicks or long range efforts. The winners will be the ones who can finish clinically from open play - Belgium and Lukaku were very good at that today.

Agree, not much to complain about. Substract one penalty on one side and add two on the other side and the result would have been there to support that view.

Brasil, Spain, Belgium my top teams, with France, England and Portugal still unknown quantities and too early to discount Germany and Argentinia.

Nah. They won't be able to pull that trick off against a top team.

England's performance could and should have been better. That aside; World class tournaments require world class officials and the referee and his team tonight were piss poor.

It's funny, because up until this game I've been thinking the officiating has been pretty good this WC. Maybe a bad egg and hopefully this ref won't see another game this tournament.

Mexico play well but can they sustain that intensity? I agree that no team will want to face them in the knockouts (much like Portugal) for different reasons.

Reflecting on this, 2-1 is the best result. If we had won 3-0 or more then the England Expects machine would have gone into overdrive. As it is, a result against Panama means we qualify and still hold the cauldron/pressure cooker off for a bit longer while the team settles.

Hopefully Gareth starts chopping the dead wood sooner rather than later.

    Escape to Victory to come...

Awaiting the breaking of Kanes ribs, but he scores an amazing bicycle Bale/Pele goal before being taken off in the final. Ashford scores the Ossie goal...

Exactly so, last nights incompetent and blatantly biased refereeing was shocking and the way things seem to be, that bugger will likely get the final! Also, what’s this crap with linesmen having a few words and virtually climbing into the shorts of corner takers when they are setting up to take their shot?

Latest news from the German camp: Everything sorted, Jogi Löw just sent a few boxes of booze to the Swedish camp to support their midsommar party on Friday.

Not bad by England. Terrible ref (the obv penlaty on Kane and the one he gave against Walker). Took too long bringing on subs to change things and I can't see us winning anything with Jordan "sideways pass but gesticulate forwards to the CB" Henderson. Young was bad. Plain bad. If either of them played for a side outside the Top 6 they wouldn't even be in the squad.

Agree re Young and Henderson. Dier and Rose in for those two and we’ll be sorted.

It’s hard to see how Vardy plays in this team given Kane’s position. Teams like Tunisia being so deep gives him so little space to run into. Yet I feel he would have buried some of those chances. Probably would have had a crafty penalty from the Lingard’s chance that hit the post too.

I think group H is going to be the tight one.

Senegal weren't half bad. Whoever wins will be competitive in the next round, so I think there is incentive for England to win their group to avoid the H winners.

Not really one for conspiracy theories, but after yesterday refereeing against England I do wonder if the "fix" is already in. I certainly hope not, but given the amount of corruption in the world game, it would not surprise me. I am not sure it would take that much money.

Anyone else disappointed by ITV's policy of have as many foreign ex players as possible as pundits? Not impressed.

Why? I think he's settled in to punditry in the past year or so after a shaky start.

Whilst what he says may be positive, the way he talks and delivers the information is what I find grating.

He’s not alone, a lot of the pundits talk in the same way.

I genuinely think Russia look quite tasty. They are fit strong play in an attacking positive style with real pace, got height and of course the home support. Can see them going reasonably far with a rub of the green.

Pundits are IMO a total irrelavance just wind and the yellow stuff tend to turn them of either at half time or at the end.Nice job for retired players.

That’s pretty good when the pressure is on and your whole country expects. They will only improve too, and nothing is so empowering as the confidence that knocking in 8 goals gives you. Their self belief right now will be off the charts, but then..... that’ll prob end up being their downfall
