    World Cup 2018 discussion thread

Following on from the Spain Portugal match last night, we don’t seem to have a thread for the tournament in general.

So here we have a thread to discuss everything going on in Russia fir the next few weeks.

Starting in 30 minutes with France/Australia; lets go!

My prediction for this one is France by the odd goal.

2:1 to France. I can’t see either team doing much going off that performance!

A pathetic dive, and even with replay. - the ref doesn’t see it.

Just watched ‘The Impossible Job’ not a bad show about the England managers since 66, Christ the Keegan admisssion still gets me to this day and the fact he still doesn’t talk about it or any other England boss is admirable...

It made me think how many penalty shoot outs we have lost, dodgy decisions and a couple of goalkeeping stinkers that have costs us. Strangely it has generally not been about being outplayed as such.

Still - worth trading all those for one dodgy Russian linesman surely

Not being able to win on penalties cost us massively in the 1990s when we probably deserved to be in 2 international finals and could've picked up 1 or 2 titles. And we had a great team in 98 too so who knows how far they could've gone?

It's very hard to win anything in international football if you can't win the odd game on penalties and I think our record is 1 shootout won in 8 or 9 attempts.

Saying that the more recent losses on penalties have probably been deserved based on the performance of the team in normal time.

Iceland may be at it again, currently one a piece against Argentina.

Just noticed that Peru are managed by César Luis Menotti (minus the fags).

Watched Spain Portugal last night good match just watching Denmark Peru but in truth only the England games mean anything just as for me only the Chelsea games really mean anything in the EPL.

Watching Denmark against Peru in a pretty rough bar in Denmark. They’ve just gone mad!

Spain against Portugal, although a MUFC fan, I’ve grown to detest Ronaldo. His gamesmanship is effective, but unappealing.

Think the implementation of VAR in the World Cup where the referee goes over to view the evidence and then makes the decision is a better implementation than what we suffered in the FA Cup.

Currently watching the Peru vs Denmark game. The ref has been great (so far)

Well done to Iceland. They did well against Portugal in 2016. Could this be an omen for Argentina & Messi to improve and go on after that result?

Portugal vs Spain has been the stand out game so far.

Messi just never turns up for Argentina. They should have had a pen tho, rhe VAR seems good but someone must have picked up the pen near the end. Seems a bit pointless if stuff still gets missed

I think that Argentina as a team would be better off without Messi: The players would be forced to think for themselves, become creative. Now, all 10 players are focussing on Messi. However, the creativity is lurking beneath the surface. E.g. when Argentina scored (Agüero). Messi was not included in that attack. Every time Messi plays for the National Team, his performance is poor compared with his performance with Barcelona. Simply because Barcelona has more fantastic players.

I didn’t realise he’d already quit playing for Argentina before coming back, just does not seem to be able to do it when it matters mostly, like yesterday when he missed the pen and cost me my treble bet!!!

If Argentina had won (like they should have) I had a bet on that would have paid out a few hundred. To say I was slightly miffed may be an understatement.

So far all the games except Spain/Portugal have been pretty dire/boring.

That’s par for the course though but if you think the matches so far have been dire, just wait until Monday night’s game!

Has Ronaldo already won the golden boot? If not who can catch him.

Five or six goals often gets it so he’s well on the way. It’s far too early to be a given yet though.

The bookies still have someone other than Ronaldo to get golden boot. He is showing 2/1 at the moment.

Costa is one goal behind and Spain look to get further in the tournament.

    Brazil yet to play.

    Kane yet to play ;-)

Ronaldo is 2/1. Costa is next at 7/1. Neymar 9/1.

Ive got Costa/Spain double and Aquero/Argentina double among a few other long shot bets.

One happy camper here! Not a fan of Germany, so this is wonderful. (Although I still expect that they're going to win the Cup...). Dutch comment on forehand: "...the Mexicans expect the Germans to be positioned far away from their own goal, leaving space between the players and the goalie." How right the comment/prophecy was! And... Lozano plays for a Dutch team.

Catastrophe! Except for Neuer, none of the players has convinced me. The centre is wide open, as is the back.

Only good news is that they only conceived one goal so far... Could have been three.

With the exception of Spain (and Ronaldo on his own) I've not seen a team yet that I would think England would really struggle against. Brazil started well but look vulnerable at the back. Appreciate it's the early games and teams are more reserved but this looks to be an open tournament.

Been impressed with most of the refereeing sofar, particularly the fact that they seem
to be not giving free kicks when players fall over when an opponent just closes them
from behind. Think players already catching on to this so trying to play rather than buy the
    free kick.
