My youngest is busy working on a school project. With his friends he's writing, filming and editing a 'trailer' for a movie. A really fun project according to him. We discussed the project at dinner last night and we decided to look at some videos from famous movies. Especially the opening scenes and the way the camera shows us (learns us) the situation. Enter 'Once Upon...'! We noticed that the movie's 'birthyear' is 1968! 50 years old. Half a century old. Still an amazing movie. The opening scene and the shoot-out are epic! Morricone's music helps a lot, of course.
Was my favourite film for quite a few years.

Look at the way Leone has filmed the duel scene. Frank and Harmonica are opposite of each other. Frank turns and turns, looking up at the sun. He's trying to gain advantage of his position: the sunlight in his back. But Harmonica doesn't move. The first half of the whole scene is without a single word. And still, our attention is drawn to the screen. Capturing the attention, nearly at the end of this looooong movie.
I watched the film for the first time when I was 14 y/o or so (72/73?). I still know in what cinema that was and I can even recall the seat where I sat (. Only a few other movies grabbed me like that. One was Taxi Driver in 76 I think (I did show my son the 'Are you talking to me'-scene). And a few years later the opening scene of Starwars.
There must be a separate thread in this, somewhere!

Masterpiece. Everything was right about it: direction, sets, casting, music, acting, dialogue. It's a perfect film for my money.

Wow, no I did enjoy that, surely some of that is Monument Valley though.
Made me want to watch what I consider the Greatest Western ever made all over again.

Remember studying this film at A-level 20 odd years ago. It’s liek all the best bits if every western that cane before it.... great film and even better scire
