You not suppose to inhale methinks, it's more ahem a process
I've smoked ciggies on and off for years preferring roll up to tailor mades. Never been a heavy smoker and can take it or leave it to be honest but recently I've been toying with the idea of a pipe. Anyway the other say I got hold of :
A viking waxed classic 21 pipe and 25g each of rough shag kendal mixed cherry and vanilla along with some black cherry. All from uktobacco.com
Now I know it takes some practice but so far I've been pretty underwhelmed. The tobacco has quite a harsh taste to it and I'm not smelling or tasting any of the aromatics apart from off my beard for a few hours after I've smoked.
Is anyone else here a pipe smoker and does anyone have any tips for getting the best out of the tobacco? Also what's a good aromatic tobacco that's mild on nicotine.
Thanks

It makes your clothes stink, will give you mouth cancer, oh and one other thing it will shorten your life.
A new pipe won’t taste great until it’s broken in by formation of a layer of carbon lining the bowl. And it has to be smoked gently until that carbon has built up, otherwise the bowl itself can burn, which won’t do the pipe any good and will taste vile. You also need to rotate at least two pipes if you’re a occasional smoker and more if you intend smoking daily. Ovesmoking a pipe without letting it dry out between smokes will shorten its life and again won’t taste good.
Gap in the market for a ‘vaping’ pipe.
Idiots could surround themselves with even larger clouds of smoke.
I used to go out with a Dentist and in her training book were photos of various common problems - leaving aside the mouth cancer, if you smoke them you can make a groove between two of your teeth creating a hole...
I love the smell of a pipe.
^^^ This...and ignore the holier-than-thou crowd...
Like most things, pipe smoking is an art with a steep learning curve. It can also be a faff (for some the rituals induce a Zen-like calm), so lots of patience needed. Youi're right to take it easy at first but be prepared to spend a few quid finding the right tobacco (there are thousands - bit like finding the right watch strap). It will make a world of difference.
I'd suggest trying Clan, Holland House, Gold Block and Capstan Ready Rubbed (very cig-a-like) for mild aromatics to get you started. All available (and more) here: http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/index...TOBACCO&cat=69
I can’t smoke for toffee... thankfully!
But my uncle used to smoke one and I LOVED the smell of it, If I recall correctly I think it was a tobacco called drum?

My Grandad used to smoke 'Mahogany, ready rubbed' or something like that. It always smelt absolutely lovely.
If he couldn't get hold of that tobacco, he wouldn't smoke at all.
Not a smoker myself though, so this isn't a recommendation based on my own smoking experience!
Stay off the aromatic/favoured tobaccos — they smell nice in the pouch, but they burn harsh and are the worst for "tongue bite".
My father used to smoke Sobranie reserve blend in Peterson pipes.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but a friend of mine asked me to make him a pipe a few years ago for smoking some "herbs".
I enjoyed making it so much i went down a pipe making rabbit hole. Not sure if they're any good for tobacco, but some of them are still kicking about if anyone wants one?
^mate. You have worked on the set of 'the hobbit' and i claim my five pounds
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Thanks for all the comments and to those showing concern for my health. I'm fully aware of the dangers of smoking and as said before its only an occasional thing. I like the idea of the relaxing process of filling the pipe, the smoke and smell. To be honest I'm looking at only smoking it maybe once a week anyway. Thanks for the tips and advice so far folks
Must say #EchosevenNine they are some fine looking pipes you've made there but a little hobbit of the glen for me.
Off to look at silk dressing gowns now to go full Coward
Yeah theyre mad looking things. They'll be going in the bin next clear out.
My uncle, when I was a kid, smoked a pipe. My biggest recollection is him constantly relighting the bloody thing all the time!
