Wow, what an opportunity! I suppose the obvious ones are,
How did you get interested in watches, and why?
Enjoy the experience!
I have been asked to interview M.Edmond Capt, designer of the ETA 7750 automatic chronograph movement, for an English luxury magazine.
My brief is to discover more about the career of M. Capt and the design, evolution and development of this extremely popular calibre, used by many marques.
As I'm not a journalist, would any members have any suggestions as to what questions could be interesting ones to ask him ?
I will be in CH mid July.
I hope I can expect good ones, bad ones, funny ones and silly ones !
Thanks.
Brendan.

Suggestions (‘cos I don’t know the answers and the readers are presumably non-WIS. For the most part):
1. Did you know you were on to something special when designing the movement and if so, why?
2. What were you aiming to achieve with the movement? That is, what was lacking in what was available at the time?
Not suggesting plagiarism and you may know this stuff already but am sure you could draw some points from this
which would make interesting questions and hopefully answers.
You always tend to get some slightly different answers when you can bring up things which are supposedly well know facts
with the actual person.

Has he followed the work of Richard Habring evolving the 7750 and, if so, what does he make of it?
see, for example, https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/in...e-man-who-inve
Where do you start when designing a watch movement from scratch?
What problem where you trying to address by designing a new watch movement?
What is his view of the Chinese blatantly replicating his movement? Is it annoyance or flattering?
What other chronograph movements does he admire? Does he see the ubiquity of the 7750 as a bad thing? What one thing would he change about the movement given what he knows now?
What is his favourite watch using the 7750?
Was it a commission or did he design it first then ‘sell’ it. Might be a crap question if he was working for ETA at the time I guess.
I've just been told by a JleC watchmaker that the 7750 is shortly to be archived !
Not sure if this is true yet, but it begs the question what will replace it ?

This is going to be fun ! My French is a bit rusty and M. Capt doesn't speak much English. And I only have one day to get this done so selecting relevant questions is essential.
I'm going to ask Philippe Dufour to come along. He lives nearby and I have known him for years. Doigts croisés !

It would be good to see the end result, is that possible?
Amazing questions guys, I couldn't possibly suggest better.
Good luck with the interview Brendan, I look forward to the results, you lucky devil!
Bonne chance
One thing I just thought of: I will ask him if he has Huguenot ancestry.
Since many early artisans/residents of the Vallée Joux, were !
