    Holiday help

I have a gap in July from the 13th to the 30th (inclusive) during which I'll have no wife, kids or any other commitments.

My original plan was to go to France with my bike, golf clubs and camera and follow the tour de France as I've done many times before.

But, I could do anything, anywhere. Money almost no object.

I like: being outside, driving, photography, sports (watching and doing) fishing (all kinds) and wandering around. Places I can learn stuff all the better.

I dislike: lazing on beaches, package holidays.

    Ideas so far:

I thought about going to the F1 races in Hockenheim and Budapest, but I don't think I can get back on time from the Hungaroring.

A mate said why not try to go take pictures of every type of penguin in the world as a joke, but that's right up my street.

    Rugby 7s in San Fransisco.

    Got any better ideas?

Managed to do that on my honeymoon. A trip back to Pompeii without my wife whining about being tired and bird might be a good idea though.

wow - world truly your oyster so infinite number of things you could do

have a think about South America

    Trek to Machu Pichu
and in Colombia do the Trek to the Lost City
for me Medellin would give you some amazing photographic opportunities
    then Galapagos

pop into Trailfinders as they are great at helping you put together an independent trip

Machu picchu has always been on my list, but never made it so far.

Another idea is an archeological dig holiday
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

    Learn to sail.

Can be done all over the world, in any climate. You can learn it in small(er), more demanding boats, or larger boats that are easier to handle. You can learn it on lakes or on seas. Kids and parents together or separated. Fishing is optional every other thing you mentioned is included. And it is a perfect start for future family holidays (bareboating in Greece, the Carib or Vancouver Island just to name a few). Contact the RYA.

Over the last 30 or so years, I must have had hundreds of men and women on my boat, wanting to learn to sail. The last few years, I teached/trained people who attended a family week: grown-ups on my boat or my colleagues; the kids on oppies, or surfboards, leaving the holiday homes around 9AM, returning a 5PM. At night a program for the kids and a program for the parents. Nice thing to do. Not this year; I'll be manning a 75 HP RIB as 'rescue vessel' near Plymouth when my son and a few mates will attend the UK Laser Open.

Couldn't you try teaching penguins to play cricket? How about Somaliland (as opposed to Somalia); I think that's where I'd go?
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

Regarding some suggestions, it’s the wrong time of year for penguins in Falklands, Patagonia, etc. (expect you knew that) and too late to book much worthwhile in Galapagos (I’m working in Ecuador at the moment and this came up whilst I was finalising arrangements for a cruise in a fortnight that we booked about eight months ago). Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley are fantastic but get very busy these days which takes the edge off a bit, however can be easily tied in with peaceful Lake Titicaca and on to Bolivia, cycle the ‘death road’ and visit Uyuni Salt Flats. Bolivia is like another planet.

Walk the Camino de Santiago - roughing it or staying in boutique hotels.

Not quite as exotic as penguins or Peru, but since you mention you like fishing how about spending some time in Slovenia?

Easy to get to, the fly fishing there for trout, grayling and marmorata is superb - mostly glacier-fed rivers that are gin clear with fish in nearly every puddle and pothole.

Although it was a few years ago, I can thoroughly recommend the services of Rok Lustrik: http://www.lustrik.com/en/

Lubjana is also worth exploring, and quite different to my expectations at least.

You also mention photography - one that is on my personal bucket list is to catch the Great Migration, and the wildebeest should be hitting the Grumeti river in July.

That's a really good suggestion - as long as he doen't need to break a pair of boots in beforehand.

A bit of a trek and an outside choice maybe but have you thought about the Zambezi Valley?
    Great game fishing and photography.
Easy flights to from London to Lusaka or London jo'burg Victoria falls.
One of the few places left in Africa you can go on game drives on foot as well. Not jet lag either!

    I am biased though.

This is the obvious suggestion. A week long bender in Amsterdam with deep pockets.

That would be a holiday to remember.

He's got 18 days. So presumably that's a week long bender plus 11 days in either hospital or jail.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

Which reminds me of advice I once received when planning a trip -

'Don't add to the population, don't subtract from the population. Don't do anything which will put you in the newspaper, the hospital or jail. And if you do end up in jail, establish dominance early.'

18 days probably not long enough for a PPL, but a gliding course would work and you'd be flying solo by the end.

I met a guy once who was a paramedic. I asked him what did on his holidays. He volunteers somewhere hardcore doing paramedic stuff. Places like Mexico City etc. He's ex forces so i guess he's addicted to the adrenalin. I asked his wife what she does (she is also a paramedic) and she just likes to do the lying on a beach with a book thing. Horses for courses. Volunteering though is a nice way to spend time in a another country, finding something that matches your skills /what you want to do in the time available might not be so easy
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

You've probably thought of this already, but you could buy a watch from SC, sell it on eBay at a profit, then spend a few weeks on the internet arguing with middle-aged men.

Some brilliant suggestions here. Some I've done, some bucket list stuff that my wife would kill me if I did without her, and other ideas I'm really considering.

I'd like to avoid jail on a foreign country. Done that already.
