    American Elgin Hunter Repair

I love the superb quality of vintage American watches and always enjoy restoring them.
If not for the depression and importation of cheaper Swiss watches, who knows what great technological heights the American Watch Industry would have achieved.
This particular example was made in 1889.
14ct case. Gold balance timing screws, gold collar jewelling. Nickel plates.
It had minor damage to the balance pivots and dried oil on the wheel pivots.

Fine regulate by turning the screw between + and -. Lovely idea !

Wind and handset are made by pulling the curved lever. The arrangement for engaging each, under the dial is unique:

Lovely tool for removing hands without pressing on the enamel dial:

    Sorry the photos are jumbled.

    That’s truly magnificent

it’s a long time [no pun intended] since I owned a pocket watch that’s made think I should start looking again.

When I was researching my Elgin pocket watch I came across this video of the factory - this bit showing how they decorated the back plates.

What an incredible find ! Thank you.
To me that film is absolutely priceless.
Imagine if not for the crash what heights American watches may have reached.
I never realised, the balance wheel rotates the equivalent of 3665 miles per year !
    Amazing !
    Thanks again.
PS: The subsequent film about Waltham is just as intriguing.
