Nothing which I can report yet, sorry, but I shall pick up the thread just as soon as there is!

The material in post #76 has incensed certain people in the industry...

    I can’t imagine who!

The question is, are the auction industry incensed at the behaviour of one of their own or at you for raising the issue?

The disbelief and anger of which I am aware is reserved for the auctioneer.

Anyone unhappy with me for raising the matter could expect a full, loud and public response!

Out of interest, kudos to one auction house well known to tz-uk. This one on occasion lists incorrect watches in ignorance.....but without hesitation withdraws them upon receipt of relevant information.

It has been claimed that the buyer of this watch had read the comments about it on a watch forum, but still chose to proceed with the purchase. Members may find this hard to believe, but it is possible.

Even if he did, I don't believe it changes the position.

May I thus extend the invitation here (as I will elsewhere) for him either to engage with the forum or to message me directly (with his identity protected, if desired). My real name is Haywood Milton and I may be found quite easily in the UK using Google.

Interesting. Buyer of fake watch read comments confirming it as a fake watch before purchasing but went ahead and bought it anyway, just for the lolz of it all.

Perhaps he thought all the advice was wrong and he'd get a bargain, or perhaps the auction house are trying to discredit the advice given here, either way I'm glad it's not my £20k!

  24. #124
What the buyer did or did not do is something of a vermillion mackerel....

It is the auction house’s actions are at issue, as we know. This will certainly be most interesting.

I don’t think so, the watch will surface at some point and then the truth will out, perhaps the old trick of selling to the back wall (or the modern internet version) was played here? The fact is the auction house knowingly ‘sold’ a fake Rolex. The seller may even have bought his own watch, oh what tangled webs we weave...

    Double Red 1665 for £2-3k?

I’m no expert and kudos to HM for his expertise on the vintage Rolex’s along with other members . Ok it’s already established it’s probably a Franken but is it possible in other cases the genuine thing is sitting there at an auction and the fear and scaremongering of the thousands of frankens out there puts a buyer off a genuine opportunity.

Mind due with the money they are asking I would want double red double assurances . If alarm bells ring - it’s time to walk . Such a minefield .

    Genuine Steinhart btw ^

This certainly hasn't fizzled out....only what is currently reportable.

There are plenty of people capable of identifying a genuine DRSD and a fake or otherwise incorrect DRSD.

There are some whose knowledge is not sufficient that they should bid, but that will always be the case.

Lest there be any doubt, yes, this matter rumbles on in a number of ways.

Until yesterday the Facebook account for Humbert & Ellis Limited showed reviews from third parties.

I added [another!] one star review expressing my brief thoughts on what had happened here, inviting any visitors to the page to google "tz-uk drsd humbert" whereupon they might read much more here.

Less than a day later, it seems that reviews are no longer visible on the Facebook page. I understand that the feature can be turned off.

I have now added a review to the company's Google listing :

Let us see if that remains public for long! Other tz-uk members are of course allowed to add their own, if appropriate.

It is amusing to note that one of those who has given the company a five star review goes by name of . . . ah, um . . . Jonathan Humbert.

Dog / bone . . . yes, but so we should be with people like this in the trade.

Oh dear......google Humbert Ellis and then click on the Google Reviews, currently 20 of them with an average of 3.6 stars.

There were no reviews for months, then immediately after I posted my stinger about the faked up DRSD a "Victoria Ivanova" has posted this five star recommendation:

"I bought the Rolex watch of my partners dreams for him in a recent auction. It has now been fully restored and I think is now more important to him than I am! Everyone at Humbert and Ellis were so mega helpful, a truly great auction house!"

    What's that I'm smelling?

This has just become even more interesting.

Overnight, a chap using the name "David Worrow" tried to put two shocking reviews of me or my businesses online. The first was under www.miltonsdiamonds.com, referring to me as its boss and saying that I was an "axxxhole of biblical proportions." The latter is arguable, but the former is not --- that's not my website! His second review was against one of my businesses' Google listings, as follows:

We do not appear to have any record of Mr. Worrow having done business at that shop.

However, look at the name of this chap, blowing smoke up Humbert & Ellis nine months ago:

The same David Worrow? Yes, according to Google.

Who could question any of the reviews of Humbert Ellis? I am sure that he is no more "connected" than any of the other reviewers......he says, eyes drifting to the name of the chap at the bottom here...

So while no-one from Humbert & Ellis seems to wish to engage with my communications about the bad watch they sold, one of their champions wishes to make up fake reviews of my businesses and me?

Is there something wotten in Whittlebury? This nonsense does nothing to diminish my intention to keep working on the case...

No, surely not a coincidence --- and there is a Victoria Ivanova among his Facebook friends as well !

One could almost think someone's plans of the last 24 hours had rather back-fired....

Quick, check Milton's Diamonds on FB as well, for false reviews.

I'm sure many of us can check a profile for you if you're blocked by the Monty Python Shill Circus.

Disappointing, but not shocking in terms of their actions. Plenty of companies who operate a less than, ahem, "customer-centric" sales model, are not beneath such unbiased reviews.

What separates these clowns is their absolute stupidity in trying to exact revenge. The problem with thick business people is that they can't tell when they're beat.

My concern for you, Haywood, (if I may be so bold) is that this goes from the proper skewering of an auction house that engages in dodgy practices, to somewhere between a pain in the backside and a genuine distraction to your business, depending on their level of idiocy in escalation. While I applaud your actions in drawing attention to what amounted to fraud (in my eyes), I also believe that the buyer themselves must beware, and that little additional good comes from arguing with idiots. Let others pick up the banner to expose these clowns in future auction of dubious provenance, perhaps?

    Thanks for your concern, noted.

A little more digging this morning shows Facebook friendships link Jonathan Humbert, David Worrow, Victoria Ivanova and Shelley Scribbins.

Five star Google reviews of Humbert Ellis have been submitted by people with the names Jonathan Humbert, David Worrow, Victoria Ivanova and Shelley Scribbins.

    Go figure.

The more cynical among us might consider the reviews to be those of shills and stooges or even made under some kind of quid pro quo arrangement.

Others might just think how nice it is that friends and/or acquaintances have been happy with Humbert & Ellis services and wish to share this information.

Perhaps Humbert & Ellis go the extra mile for their friends and/or acquaintances?

No reviews for nine months and then three five-star reviews in 24 hours.

    Could be coincidence. Could be.
