People have to fill their time with something. I guess it's relatively harmless compared to some of the other options available.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

My wife complained I have too many watches so I countered with "You have too many handbags" but got in return , "No I don't and you have more watches than I have shoes and not pairs of shoes just shoes !"

    Fair point :)

To further the discussion, how does one respond to the accusation "You can only wear one at a time" ?

I am defiant. It's neither possible to have too many watches nor think too often about them.

    I only have two.

    But think about them often.

Not too much though as I have a number of other things that occupy my time and need my attention.

We need a variety of things I think - focusing exclusively on one partiular thing isnt that good for most of us in my opinion.

The problem is on this forum - many of us own more shoes than our wives!

I'm going to have a real go. I've got a suspicion that you enjoy a smaller collection because they get worn a lot more.
This is a theory, about to be tested .

I think it’s time for the OP to weigh in.

For my part, I plead guilty and am considering what to do about it.

At the beginning of the year I decided to reduce time spent on watch forums, stop visiting ADs, unsubscribe from watch related emails, sell watches I no longer wear. So far it hasn’t worked, but at least I have managed to stick to not buying any more watches. Progress of sorts.

I guess this means I still have too many watches and spend too much time thinking about watches.

Too many watches, too many jackets, too many jeans, too many shoes, too many cameras & lenses... I'm beginning to think that there may be a pattern developing here.

Well at this exact minute, I'm revising for an exam. There are three watches sitting beside me and I'm replying to this thread and browsing watchshop.

Beginning of April I told myself no more new watches.

Since then I’ve ended up buying 4 more.

Let me know how you get on.

My issue is that I still have a number to try before I commit to 3. Only 2 watches out of my collection I would say are keepers, as such they get worn the most. That said, if I had to decide on 3 only maybe only 1 of my collection would get in.

    You have me thinking!

I don't think about watches all that much.

    Hang on.

    That's not true.

I log in here at least five times a day to read threads like this, so I suppose I must think about watches quite a bit.

I hate threads like this because it forces me to be self-reflective. So here goes...

Do I have too many watches? Yes and no, I guess. I currently own 14 watches. Realistically no-one needs 14 watches. However, I have cleverly constructed (self-)justifications for why I own 14 watches, and at least it’s a rather more manageable number than the 25 I owned 4 years ago.

Do I spend too much time thinking about watches? Well, let’s see... I log on to this forum 2 or 3 times a day. I’m currently selling a watch on SC. I’m selling another watch on eBay. I’m thinking about which watch I’m going to sell next. I’m considering the watch I’m going to buy next when I’ve accumulated the funds. I’m in e-mail correspondence with the owner of the company I’m buying my next watch from. Oh, and I’m continuing to steadily rack up my post count engaging with threads like this one...

So yes, I think I’d have to say that I do spend too much time thinking about watches .

    I remain unrepentant...

    Simon

I have too many watches for me, but a small amount compared to collectors.
I think about them around 50 hours a week on average. I suppose that could be considered too much to someone who doesn't think about them at all or not enough if you're JC Biver or Thierry stern.
    It's all relative.

Too many watches although Seiko and G-Shocks don’t count. Think/hope three ‘real’ watches will be the magic number for me but as for time spent thinking about watches, too much.

However do find comfort in he fact there are worse things to put your energy into and everyone is into something so let it be.

When my wife tells me I’m sad etc I tell her it could be worse. I could be collecting stamps or spending my days outside Heathrow plane spotting. That usually works for be time aspect just not the money!

42.5 hours at work mon-fri with around 30 mins each evening (45) plus a couple of hours a day on the weekend (49) with an hour added on to round up to 50 because I suspect my numbers are conservative. :)

Way, way too much. I own over a dozen watches witg several being rotated out every few months. Sad yes but my wife, while she deplores what she sees as wasted time, understands that there are worse addictions to have!

I’m a little envious. A dream job for lots of us, and the best excuse to be thinking about watches.

I recently sold a couple of watches, reducing the count to two. I was intending on putting the money aside, towards a more expensive purchase later.

Nope, all I did was think about what I could buy RIGHT NOW. Placed a WTB post and got a response ten minutes later. It is waiting at the RM depot for me, having missed the postie today. I have had several days of “new watch” anticipation, awaiting its arrival.

I recognise that I need to find other pursuits to divert my attention. I have sidelined into pens, but that is just as addictive and also involves spending money acquiring a “collection”.

    Yes

Yes I have and I do!

Now I’ve come to terms with my condition can I get some more please?
As far as I’m concerned the only way to feel less obsessed is to buy more, so my brain becomes used to seeing that many watches, which in turn desensitises and reconditions my thought pattern into thinking I’m normal and the world is just full of watches 🤪🤪

I only have 5 expensive watches (1 more being added this year), but I can't even use clothes or shoes in my defence to my wife, as I trump her in all areas of my wardrobe. It really is ridiculous - especially as I am now running out of space, even with 2 houses.

And it's all your fault !
