I find mobile apps always conveniently neglect the important options. Get on a computer and give it a Google, because within PayPal you have the option to force PayPal to let your bank do the conversion rather than PayPal. They hide it well! I was stung on a couple of my transactions before finding the setting.

    LOL!

Cost me £30 in paypal fees and I am certain they are deliberately misleading and vague around these fees.

I have complained, and even thought I don’t expect them to help me, it made me feel a bit better!

Always let your bank do the conversion. PayPal exchange rates are hilarious.

Or if you can and have time - transferwise.com or equivalent.

Yes, that was the nub of my issue - paypal wouldn’t let me use my Halifax MasterCard to pay in Euros; it forced me to use their conversion if I used that card. I searched every option and menu. In the end the payment page in eBay made it appear very very very much like I was paying in euros but when I checked my paypal receipt later, they had done the conversion and billed me in £.

I’ve complained but don’t expect to hear anything.

It used to be clearer but they've since hidden it under a different section. It took me a while to find when I paid for something in dollars recently. I'll try and find it and post a screen grab.

There's a way to use the bank conversion rate instead of Paypal's but you have to have a Credit Card attached to Paypal, not a normal bank card and it's buried in the options pages:
