    Prague recommendations

So its my wife’s big birthday and I have arranged a little trip to Prague. We are there for 3x nights. I have booked a hotel at the base of the Charles Bridge, Pod Vezi.

I have pre-booked the Prague Food tour which gets great reviews

    http://www.prague-food-tour.com/?gcl...SAAEgJZVfD_BwE

I was calling on the experience of the forum as I wondered if there was anything else (trips etc) that other people have done that they would recommend whilst in Prague or any restaurants etc? My better half is pregnant so I don’t want to plan anything with too much exertion.

Look forward to any good ideas and thanks in advance for your help...

    Prague is a cracking city and fantastic when it comes to food and drink. The old city is a complete tourist trap with many sh*tty restaurants, but scratch the surface and you'll find some gems. Here are some of my favourites;

Field restaurant is superb - http://www.fieldrestaurant.cz/en/. I've been there three times in the last three years and it's been consistently excellent.

Sansho is good for something different, it serves some wicked Asian dishes - http://sansho.cz/.

If your or your good wife are vegetarian, or just fancy a veggie meal, Etnosvet is very good - http://etnosvet.cz/en/.

The best burgers are in Prague are to be found in Dish - https://www.dish.cz/.

The Hemmingway Bar is good too if you fancy a whisky or a cocktail, quite touristy but it's a proper old school bar with proper table service - https://www.hemingwaybar.cz/bar-prague/.

If you're into beer then try Pivovaraky Klub - http://www.pivovarskyklub.com/. They're not bothered with a social media presence, flashy marketing etc, just beer. They always have great local beer on tap and about 200 or so bottles in the fridges.

As for things to do, the usual sights are well worth a look...old town, castle etc. One somewhat unusual place that I really like is the Heros of Heydrich memorial - https://www.prague.eu/en/object/plac...u-heydrichiady. If you're in anyway interested in WW2 history, it's well worth a visit.

    Enjoy the trip!

Take the funicular railway up to the mini Eiffel Tower

    https://www.pragueexperience.com/places.asp?PlaceID=604

and then take a stroll across to the Castle.

Lovely city although it was a good few years ago that we went.

I'm a big fan of the cafes in Prague - the best are Imperial, Slavia, Obecni Dum (an art nouveau masterpiece) and my favourite Louvre. It was here that Kafka and Einstein amongst others would drink coffee & chat in this Austro-Hungarian influenced long room.

Cafe Lucerna is also a stunning art nouveau space in the Lucerna passageway just off Vaclavske Namesti. Only 5 mins away from the busy tourist trail it's a fascinating quirky place to grab a coffee or beer.

I love Prague but have not been sadly for a few years.

I did a quick Google search and my favourite Pizzaria is still there. It in the heart of Vaclavski Namesti (Wenceslas Square) and is tucked away in a courtyard off the main square. http://www.vaclavka.cz/

But as others have said there are some great cafes and restaurants, just try and avoid the typical tourist trappings.

There used to be some nice cafes heading up Vinohradska, this is just beyond Vaclaski Namesti and behind the Museum. Vinohrady is one of the major nice affluent residential areas so you have some lovely cake shops and cafes. If you continue onwards seemingly out of the city you come to Namesti Miru which is a small square with some nice typically Czech restaurants and cafes. Further on again is Zizkov. Here you'll find the old TV tower (Televisni Vez), which has a lovely bar/café up the top which given its height and the fact its on top of a hill offers great views over the city.

Appreciate some of those suggestions may be a bit far out, but you can always take the trams which are great; as too is the Metro system.

There was also a nice little café/bar on the River at the Karlov Most (Charles Bridge) with a nice patio area which seemed a nice place to chill out looking across the Charles Bridge back to the Castle (St Vittus). Then there are the myriad bars and cafes in Strrametski Namesti (Old town square), nice pavement bars/café culture but you'll pay nearly twice as much for a Pivo (Beer) here, if you can find a nice traditional Pivovar (pub), often in basements with brick vaulted ceilings serving fine beers, pork knuckle, sauerkraut and dumplings.

The Castle/Cathedral is worth a look, but the whole city; and its Parks are all lovely.

    Enjoy!

If I was going back, and could only make a quick commando stop, it would be the picture gallery at the Strahov Monastery:

    https://www.strahovskyklaster.cz/en/picture-gallery

The library is meant to be worth a visit too.

Bear in mind, that in some of the places you visit up in the castle district, if you are packing a piece (or two) you will have to hand it in at reception.

All I can say is that I stayed at the same hotel in October although in the annex Pod Vezi and location is perfect for the castle side and then a short walk over the bridge to the city.

I’d have a stroll down to the cafe in the Municipal House for a bit of Art Deco history. The Communism museum is close by which is also worth a look if you’re that way inclined.

Wife and i were in Prague the weekend before last, food tour was great. If you can get tickets for the Estates Opera you should, even if you are not a fan. The production of the Marriage of Figaro we saw there was stunningly good and almost as cheap as a tour. You can book online.

If your can't get into Hemingways they have another bar nearby called the "Cash Only", too small for stag and hen do's so good for civilised chat. Seats upstairs are good, i'd resist if they offer you something downstairs, its a bit of a dungeon . It is cash only so take plenty.

My recommendation would be to stay in the hotel until you can get the next flight home, I have never had a worse experience in any European city than I did in Prague, everyone was out to shaft the tourist, even the municipal workers!

Make sure you see an opera or ballet or both. I had no interest in either but they are good value in Prague and the theatres are impressive. There is a really good cocktail bar called Hemingways which does some amazing cocktails. Gets very busy though.

Do the Charles Bridge and the main square as early as you can in first light of the morning!
It is utterly rammed with people otherwise until the early hours. Unpleasantly so.

Prague is a fantastic place to visit.

I used the TimeOut city guide on my iphone and it was great for moving around and recommendations to eat/visit etc.

We used the 'Prague Airport Transfers' to get from the airport and would do exactly the same again for our next visit.

Yes on this note be careful of the taxis picking you up on street most of them will rip tourists off (and even the locals when i was living there!)

It is very easy to use the public transport, its amazingly efficient, clean and safe - the night trams take over when the metro closes. There is a bus 119 from the airport to the end of the metro line which goes straight into town/Mala Strana etc. Some of the 1970/80s metro stations on the network are interesting to see and the older rickerty 1970s Skoda trams fun to ride. At the airport there are machines or during daytime a kiosk where you can buy tickets. There is a useful 1 or 3 day transport pass, the 3 day works out at around £10/11 so good value. Stamp the ticket once when you enter bus/metro/tram to validate it.

Whilst obviously not a nice experience for you, I've just come back from 5 days in Porto having chosen it over Lisbon - reading your post, I'm glad I did.

Went to Prague in 2003 before it got really busy. Want to go back and do it properly though. We got ripped by a taxi driver even back then. It ended up being funny as we drove over the same bridge for the 3rd time. When dropped off 20 mins later we were genuinely one street down from our apartment (our first night out so didn't know where we were going). Charged us the equivalent of 8 quid.

Was still covered up as of 10 days ago. Plenty of other stuff to see/do. I took a trip out to Terezin concentration camp - about 30 minutes outside Prague, heart breaking but worth visiting if you're into your history.

Avoid the railway station. Within 2 minutes of arriving, my wife had her backpack opened (whilst wearing it) and her iPad nicked. Rather put us off Prague really, we won't be going back.

Been to Prague a few times, but the first was 12 years ago, and the last two were trips with the boys so not the most cultural or culinary in nature. Beautiful place, and zero hassle with the locals. It sounds odd, but they have/had quirky little sex & torture museums which are amusing / grim respectively, but interesting (my wife enjoyed them, for what it's worth). Apart from that, all the usual places - Castle, Bridge, Old Town etc. - mentioned so far are worthwhile. The Astronomical Clock is very underwhelming, so if it's boarded-up you aren't missing much. The Jewish Cemetery is notable for Kafka's grave. Try some places away from the tourist traps on the main squares - there are some cracking little basement bars around, and much cheaper too.

But what do I know - I've also been to Lisbon twice and really enjoyed it...

If nobody has mentioned it yet the Palffy Palac restaurant is worth a visit, both for the food and decor although it's quite a few years since I last visited.

Hotel Pod Vezi is an excellent choice, as you say ideally placed for the Charles Bridge. Make sure to have a meal in the hotels own restaurant one evening, also check out Café Crepery Pod Vezi just around the corner for breakfast.
Already mentioned is the mini Eiffel Tower , we walked up through the park to access it rather than the funicular, took about 30 minutes.
We also enjoyed an evening river cruise.

Yes spent lots of frustrating time here in the 90s, giving plenty of time to admire it. None of the counters had signs on them and it was a Kafka-esque nightmare being shouted at and sent from one queue to another for no apparent reason, not helped by my shakey Czech. Thank god for the internet!

A lot of people seem to think that the Astronomical Clock is all about the animated figures. It really isn't, you may as well skip the show and the crowds and visit when it is quieter to take in the stupendous work of engineering that it is.

Many thanks, I have booked the Hotel restaurant for the night of my wives 30th, my logic being we don’t land until 7pm and I hope the hotel will help make a fuss of her as we are residents.

Interesting, given the horological interest it would be good if it is available for a viewing...

If you get the time, the 'Parachutists Church' crypt is worth a look (St Cyrils and Methodius Church). It is not on the main tourist drag as it is a quite understated building and frankly there is just SO MUCH in Prague to see and do, but the story from WW2 is very moving.

You’ve got to try the chimney, ice cream in a funnel shaped cake, they are big in Prague.
