    That looks awesome.
My equal favourite GS to its less complicated brother.
Love the mix of the dial colour with the blue hand

  2. #252
A few of mine, past and present:

An automatic. Not sure why I sold this one, it was just about perfect in every way:

    Detail of the above:

A quartz with the 8J56 movement, 200m WR and <shock> lume:

Another 8J quartz. Excellent, this one. Capped second hand. Sold to a friend, who mocks me with it regularly:

A 9F82 quartz. Capped second hand. Another daft sale:

Same on its croc strap and GS deployant:

    A quartz day-date, movement 9F83 (released in 1993)...

I still have this one. Capped second hand again. A feature that seems to be missing on some of the newer GS quartz.

    Wearing it today in fact:

I should hold onto this one I think.

    How common are capped hands?
I remember some one complaining about the lack of capped hands but I have never seen one myself

Showing my ignorance here but what are 'capped hands'? Tried to google it but just came up with a lot of omegas for sale for some reason. If anyone has the time and inclination to explain I'd be interested.

If you look carefully at the quartz GS shown above, the seconds hands have no visible hole in the centre bit! It just looks neater.

Love it for being a little different in the GS line.

Just noticed that this is 25 years old (the 9F83 day date pre-dates the 9F date-only movement, if that's not too many dates) and the rather nice and upgraded commemorative re-issue SBGT241 is on SC!

You really should hold onto that 9F83. Capped second hand as well as the bead of rice minute markers are just not made anymore.

I see. It annoys me that they make the GS so unnecessarily thick!

Yeah, I don't mind the thickness of the snowflake but this thing just seemed ridiculous; it was the weight that I really noticed. The Credor was heavy too but it was much more special. Apparently that platinum 8-day GS is one of only 8 in the world. and judging by the fact it is unsold and two years old, I can't be the only one who felt unimpressed

That's a shame - but I would love to see it in the metal nonetheless. Anyway, back on topic, and back to the nice, slim world of JDM grand seiko:

^ btw, the case isn't rough, it's just the focus and the reflected light doing funny soft things at f/1.4 ;)

I love Grand Seiko but they are generally very thick.

I am surprised the GS Engineers do not have the technical know-how to make watches with better dimensional balance. Ultra-thin watches have been made for 50 years now.

I agree, and I do hope they are reading! This is the next stage for GS, and for certain other brands too. In my opinion it could make or break them. While we wait, at least the 9F quartz models have the right proportions and give them something to aim for with the autos. As you say, it’s odd that the world collectively forgot how to make reasonably thin watches.

My 3180. It was produced from 1960 to 1964, mine is from January of 1962.

The first ones were made by engraving the Grand Seiko on the dial. It was difficult and dials were often messed up by bad engravings or breakage, so they started putting the raised logo on the dial. Mine is raised so it’s like the second version of the first.

They came in platinum and gp. I would love to get a platinum, but they are pretty hard to come by.

When I was looking for this I wanted a perfect dial and lion. Some are polished so much that there is no texture around the lion in the circle and some even have the lion worn down. I got both, but there is an engraving on the back. Something about years of service at a store in Japan.

Wow. I saw some in Japan but at astronomic prices. How did you find yours?

Yes, Seiko Caliber 68 was produced in 1969...

Calibre 6800 is tonneau-shaped, measuring 19.7 mm by 16.9 mm and just 1.9 mm thick, making it one of the thinnest watch movements ever produced. By this measure, it is even thinner than the famous Piaget 9P movement of the same era. [...] complete watches of just 4.4 mm were produced using this calibre, remaining some of the thinnest mechanical watches ever produced.
Generally found in the Credor line today, not much seen outside Japan.

My first GS. I bought it as part of a downsizing/consolidation exercise. Very very happy so far. I just I had the photography skills to do this justice.

My first ever GS - the classic Snowflake. I am absolutely in love with this thing, the dial is a work of art in itself and the perfectly polished indices and hands just add to the overall effect. I love the depth of detail that has gone into the watch, right down to the polished edges on the dial cut-out where the power reserve sits, and the two textures on the power reserve register itself. The bracelet is similarly stunning and maintains the contrast of polished and brushed surfaces, right down to the polished bevel on the edge of each link. As an aside I find it amazing that they've managed to polish titanium to such a high shine, my other Ti watch (an X-33) is a grungy dark grey by comparison.

To cap it all, the movement is a beauty and it's currently running well within Seiko's stated accuracy of 1spd: it's gained 1.6s in 23 days, which is pretty damn impressive. I also find the smooth movement of the second hand and the steadily-spinning wheels mesmeric to watch. Basically, I find myself having to check it twice whenever I need to know the time: once to be blown away by the watch's beauty, and a second time because I've distracted myself and forgotten to note what time it is... Some pics from the other week:

Spring-drive and quartz are my preference. This is my only quartz, the SBGT 241. I thought the 'beads of rice' bracelet just a bit too 'shiny' so I got this Hirsch Heritage.
I tend to prefer Grand Seikos on a strap. GS bracelets are rarely up to the quality of the watch itself.

I think we've both tried on the same watch :) Platinum is heavy.. but they are trying it on a little with the price. It's cheaper to fly to Japan and pick one up and tax it properly.

Does anyone know if Seiko makes something similar (i.e. 42mm ish, three hands and no date and a sweeping seconds hand)?

Show us your Grand Seikos THREAD

My partner with the 37mm 061 quartz; when she realised I was selling it, she grabbed it. Which is fine by me. Although she is petite, with slender wrists, it looks good.
And for comparison, her 34mm Rolex OP.

She doesn't usually wear two watches....
