    My Grand Seiko arrived about two weeks ago. My first experience of the brand. A humble watch compared to many of the delights I've seen posted here, but I'm loving it

    What's this forbidden magic you speak of! Looks awesome, I need to learn to do this. It's one of the things that annoys me about macro photos, either they're dark or half this pic is blurry! (see above!! )

    Not the best picture, took this for the watches in the sun thread, but thought I’d also put it in here...

    Look at that dial; that is absolutely stunning. Somehow I have never really looked at Grand Seiko and think I am going to need to mend my ways....

    Indeed, they have some absolutely fantastic dials. The snowflake is excellent.

    Sbge201?

    Nice. I hummed and hawed about this one for a week or two recently but, not having one available to try on, bottled it as felt it might be too big on my wrist. How does it wear? How's the bracelet finish?

    I went for another grand seiko and there is a considerable gap where the bracelet mechanism closes, eg it doesn't sit flush if that makes any sense, it's so bad that it catches on clothes and anything else....

    Old (better) branding, so it's the 001. The 2..'s are the dial branding change ones.

    Yes sorry of course! I can only see the power reserve when I look at these! (not slagging, just bought a brand new spring drive and trying to accept it!)

    Has anyone got or had the SBGA293G?
    Saw this in a Boutique in Sydney and was quite taken with it.
    But there doesn’t appear to be too many around.

    (Cross post from the new arrivals thread)

    New arrival for me, possibly the first in the U.K. (first I’ve seen referenced anyway) and second in Europe.
    It’s the next in the US only seasons watches, called S?k? for the first frosts of the season, they are inspired by a Kyoto bamboo forest, a light model (SBGA427) and a shadow model (SBGA429 - this one).
    I’ve pondered one for a short while, they were released earlier this year and it went up my list straight away as a smaller (39mm) steel Spring Drive, a technology I’ve always wanted to own. Cost of importing put me off, but I just came to the conclusion it made sense, especially now I’ve visited the very Kyoto bamboo forest, that inspires the watch.

    Over the many years!!
    I have learnt to recognise watches by their model numbers, for example Rolex and Patek.
    But I have never quite got my head around all the letters that proceeds the numbers on a GS or what they stand for.
    Would any member be happy to explain, or attach a link, from which I can glean this information?
    Many thanks.

    Lifted from elsewhere so not my own knowledge and can't stand over the accuracy....

    SBG first 3 letters, followed by :

    B = Spring drive chronograph, date:, 9R84
    C = Spring drive chronograph, GMT, date: 9R86, 9R96
    D = Spring drive manual wind 8 days, 9R01 (upcoming)
    E = Spring drive GMT, date: 9R66
    F = Quartz, date: 8J56 (discontinued)
    G = Quartz, date: 8N65 (discontinued)
    H = Hi-beat automatic, date: 9S85, 9S85 Special
    J = Hi-beat automatic, GMT, date: 9S86, 9S86 Special
    L = Automatic, PR, date: 9S67 discontinued
    M = Automatic, GMT, date: 9S66, (9S56 discontinued)
    R = Automatic, (date, 9S65, (9S55 discontinued)), no-date 9S64, (9S54 discontinued))
    S = Quartz, no-date: 9581 (discontinued)
    T = Quartz, date, day: 9F83
    V = Quartz, date (larger calendar): 9F82
    W = Mechanical hand-wind, no-date: 9S64 (9S54 discontinued)
    X = Quartz: (date, 9F62) (no-date, 9F61)

    This was a birthday gift to myself. On Sunday I took it out for a walk in the Welsh hills for it's maiden voyage. Most of you already know, but it really is superb, the dial is amazing, it's dressy, but not too dressy with that chunky date font and the huge hands. A great weight too. Not as light as some reviews would have you believe, it has a definite heft, but it just melts onto the wrist throughout the day. To say I'm impressed would be an understatement.

    Put another pic of this on the watch /strap thread, but it looks like a black dial and back strap, bad lighting. It's actually a blue dial and grey strap.

    Don't particularly like the look of the watch with the strap, I think the proportions are wrong, the 19mm strap looks and feels too small for the size of the watch, to me at least. I've given it a try for a few weeks but will be putting the bracelet back and leaving it that way.

    It's an alligator from ABP by the way.

    I am really interested to read your thoughts on different strap options.
    As I always like to add variety to a watch which would change its appearance.

    Incidentally, the watch actually comes fitted on a black strap, but I prefer brown straps, so the Boutique gave me both, along with some trinkets.
    No, discount but a free service in 5 years time and I think an additional years warranty.

    Very nice, I do like that case shape with the rounded lugs. I know how much the more 'famous' case shapes are loved, but I don't like the angled or squared off lugs.
    Same case as the blue Snowflake which really interested me, but just a bit too big for my (small) wrists!

    Is it the first of many, as a lot of us find?

    Thank you

    No this will be a one off. I needed something with a date on and have always wanted to get a GS, but never committed.

    Like you I would have preferred it to have been 39mm, but in this case, I think that the curved lugs just about fit my 6 ¾ wrist.

    Absolutely, I think one would've come back from Japan with me last year then!
    I have my 39mm Spring Drive now anyway, the Soko edition at the top of the page. :)

    Looking for recommendations/suggestions.

    The Seiko Boutique kindly sent me a pin buckle for my SBGA293G

    So, looking to try a different colour strap, initially thinking Burgundy, though happily open to other colour suggestions.

    Could members please offer advice :-)

    Catching the reflection of the markers, off the inside of the crystal. It’s a shame this one can look a little dull when the light isn’t just right. But it really pops when in bright light!
