    Helmut Sinn RIP

Taken from Sinn Facebook page -

    Sinn Spezialuhren

Today we received the news that Helmut Sinn died following a brief illness at the age of 101 years.

The former pilot and blind-flying instructor founded our company under the name ‘Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren’ in 1961, and helped shape it over many years. We will always retain very fond memories of Helmut Sinn.

    Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH

RIP. Sinn is a brand I'd never heard of until I joined here. After seeing how much respect they have from pretty much everyone on here, even if not liked, no one seems to say Sinn isn't an excellent watch, it's a brand I'd definitely like to own at some point. Which is much more realistic than my dream of owning a Rolex or Patek!

Many thanks Helmut Sinn for starting me on my watch journey with the Sinn 156. Still the best watch I ever owned and my favourite brand.

    RIP Sir!

    101. That’s a good innings, and no doubt a lot to be proud of. I love a few of watch models, so I for one am happy he decided to put the effort in.
It's just a matter of time...

RIP...I've liked various Sinn's for almost as long as I've been looking at watches, and finally obtained one of my grails a few weeks ago (a U1). Certainly an interesting personal history and as a designer/watchmaker made some very interesting and unique/iconic watches!

RIP indeed, a very good innings and a varied life. Only have 1 Sinn now my UX GSG9 which is a great piece of kit and an oil filled keeper. Thanks for the great watches.

Good innings, but sad to hear this. I've had a fair few Sinns and have liked them all. Think I need to get my 656 sent off for repair so I can get back to wearing it.

Sorry to hear the news but he had a good long life and my first real mechanical watch was a Sinn 356 II which I still own but rarely wear.I mean to get it serviced one day as it's a nice summer watch.
    RIP,Helmut.

As said, a good innings, but sad nevertheless. He certainly made an impact. A truly significant force in our hobby.

Lets ensure his memory lives on.

Strangely I was wearing one of my Sinns yesterday, when I read the news.

As I said somewhere else, that's a good long life.

Hopefully the brand will continue on in the same vein and enjoy a long life too.

When I got into this hobby many years ago I all ways like the Sinn 103 but could not afford it. I finely got one years later made in the 1980' or early 1990's when Helmut-Sinn owned the company. He will be missed by a lot of us watch collectors who collected his watches he had a nice long life.

Have worn one of my Sinns for nearly ten years - H. Sinn made a great contribution to real world watchmaking, great practical watches with an emphasis on being functional and you didn't get your pants pulled down on price either - Guinand is one of the hidden gems in the watch world as well. What a great character, RIP.

I looked at my boxes this morning, and something drew me to the 656 I've not worn for a couple of months. No idea why. It's now on my wrist, and I've just read this.

    Weird.

RIP Helmut Sinn. I own a T2 and it’s one of my all time favourites.

Thank you for an incredible horological legacy.

Oh nice, I have had a hankering after the EZM1 for a while now. Long enough to realise they are very thin on the ground.

Herr Sinn appears to have had a long life lived to the full. What more could you wish for?

If he weren't off elsewhere, I would imagine Dave would be making an appreciative post on this thread.

Undoubtedly. He was the previous owner of that 103 LE so I feel a little bit that I'm wearing it on his behalf.

My first decent watch was a 757, that's long gone along with a UX however I still have a Mocha 556i and an EZM13 in the watch box. I hope to always have one of his watches in the collection.

We are very much in an age when the smoke and mirrors of publicity shout the qualities of a brand to fix them in our minds.
Herr Sinn relied on a totally different way of creating a market for his products.
He provided the best possible product to do the job, and did so at a reasonable price.
Less shouting, and more of the quiet insistence of pleased customers.
It is a laudable attitude on which to found a watch company.
It is not unique, indeed our own host here can lay claim to this method, with great justification.
But it is rare, and to applauded.

    RIP Herr Sinn
