Milton Keynes for a night or two out

I'm off there with a few mostly mid to late 30s mates for a Friday (and probably Saturday) night.

We have the Saturday day's entertainment sorted fairly locally and we won't be doing it with stinking hangovers (it involves noisy cars etc), but need a nice, reasonably priced, place to have a meal and a few drinks on the Friday night. I for one cannot go mad on spending with a couple of stag dos and weddings coming up.

Is there much to do of a Saturday evening? It's a very split group and some will want a reasonable meal and a couple of drinks before an early night, and others will be looking for a strip club and a bit of credit card bill explaining to their respective other halves.

As a result, we will split in two following a meal, and it would be ideal if we could have a meal together, and then separate - moving on to a bar for those who want it, and entertainment for those that want more - all within a reasonable distance of each other ideally.

Feel free to PM me, but any tips greatly appreciated. Googling aside, none of us know the area.

Milton Keynes for a night or two out

The best I can say is Central London is only 40 mins or so away by train.

Or, Pink Punters up the road will make for an interesting night

That was my response when the location was announced!

    Thanks for the tips.

TripAdvisor has come up with what appears to be some OK restaurants, and t
wo of the attendees have come up with a gentleman's club - Garudaa. Interesting name...

I lived there for about a year - snowzone and xscape made it to my list of things to like about mk.

    it was a short list!

restaurant wise, jaipur was pretty good - curry house near'ish to the station and central shopping district - just down from a large open square (big fountain in the floor in the middle) with loads more restaurants (mexican, fish, french ones) and bars:

I worked there for a few months.

It has good points and bad points.

So it's swings and roundabouts really.

    More roundabouts to be honest.

During my career in the motor trade I’ve worked for VW, Audi and Mercedes for a cumulative 13 years. All 3 have their head office and training centers at MK, and they all tend to do “soft launches” of new cars around there, including some LHD stuff before it’s UK ready so I’m down there 3 times a year on average.

For the first few years, I used to try and find something to do in the evening when I was there. There’s always a few blokes on the training who like a beer and go into “town” for food and maybe go to a late bar and dance with a mutant.

Nowadays I just sit in the hotel room staring at the wall, as it’s less depressing than going out in MK.......

MK's not too bad - there are some very nice areas on the outskirts (woburn, etc.) and driving through the place is a doddle
I no longer live there though....

Your best bet is 'The Hub' which is a little way out of the 'city' and has some OK bars and eateries (Las Iguanas, Brasserie Blanc, Loch Fyne, GBK, etc.).
The 'city center' (central milton keynes) is a bit of a wasteland unless you want a night out at the theater, or fancy snowboarding, food there peaks with 5 guys, wagamammas and jamies italian.
There's the area around the MK dons stadium where the Imax is, food there peaks with TGI Fridays

There are or were some hidden gems scattered about but I've not lived there for 4 years now and rarely go back for nights out and the one that I would recommend and can remember (smoke shack in stony stratford) seems to have gone out of business.

Good luck, oh and pink punters? probably one of the safer clubs you can visit, obviously for the more broadminded but from all accounts a good laugh of a night. Never been myself though.

After visiting MK a few times on business, I arrived at the conclusion that many HO's are based there due to there being few, if any diversions for those attending training courses.

The Hub! that's the one - and a better description than mine.

(embarrassingly, we spent our honeymoon in mk - no budget for an extravagant holiday, and it was on the way back from dropping the relatives at the airport!)

Hmm, not a massive amount going for it then it seems...

Curry sounds good, so Jaipur it is for me on one of the nights.

The Draft House at the Hub has a reasonable selection of real ales if that’s your thing.

I recall being a bit late for a meeting in MK once and at the fourth roundabout my brakes being so overheated that the car only just slowed enough for it!

All I can remember about MK...

Oh, wait, a woman did once invite me back to her place there once, but it was a long drive, so I passed...

If you want a good curry, I’d be more inclined toward here:

Good pubs in Stony Stratford too

If you want a really outstanding Indian restaurant come a few miles south to The Drover’s Arms at Steppingly. It’s pretty famous, and you’ll get proper dishes you won’t get in the vast majority of Indian restaurants. It’s the real deal and a little bit posher than your usual curry house.

There's an Aspers casino in the snowdome, I think. I don't know if that would be of any interest, but I just thought I'd put it out there.
