Mmmmm beer. What beer are we drinking tonight?

Penultimate Putty 2020 came and went to end Friday nights session. BBE was 6th April and it’s nice and mellow now, no hop-burn at all.

Saturday was about gardening, cycling and rare bird spotting...

Oh to be getting on a Speedbird to a faraway destination and a beer on a tropical beach!

Highlight of Saturday night was Spur from Polly’s, my 1,498th unique beer since June 2014 when I joined Untappd...

Sunday came and went in a blur of car magazine, Internet fantasy car shopping, crap telly and before I knew it, Mrs S was making a roast.

I thought about cracking open my 750ml bottle of Saison Anniversaire 2018 from Burning Sky but reasoned that I will save it to share with friends once all this C19 awfulness is behind us.

Instead I had a glass of white wine and then, after dinner,
I racked-up 1,499 from Brew By Numbers, their 55 DIPA being one of the better beers I’ve had from them lately. Smooth, full-flavoured with masses of tropical fruit tang...

And with dessert, a sticky toffee pud with vanilla ice cream since you ask, I tackled a big, bold beer that I’ve had in the fridge since Dec’19.

    So, number 1,500?

I was recommended White Hag’s Festa Nuda in a craftbeer shop in Rome while away for a weekend. It’s a collaboration brew with Italian brewers Birrificio Lambrate and Carrow coffee roasters from Sligo. The recommendation came with a guided “drink this slowly, share with a friend”.

It’s a Barrel Aged Imperial Irish Coffee Pastry Stout, which some of you dark beer fans would love I’m sure.

Verdict? Wow. Everything on the can. Full, rich, roasty, sweet, silky-smooth. Really very good, beers like this aren’t for every day. They should be a special treat, sipped slowly and savoured. I enjoyed every last drop.

@ S Works - I was reading about PBC's 'Spur' a couple of days back, those flavour profiles sound gorgeous! I think I might try to track down some of that barrel aged stout as well, as a whisky drinker I'd love to give it a try though I have a feeling that it might be tricky to get hold of - got to be worth a look, though. If you like flavoursome darker beers then I'd recommend Wylam's Imperial Macchiato, it's gloriously rich and indulgent. One of those one can is enough drinks, in a good way!

1500 beers is good going! My brother averaged one different beer every day for a year as a personal challenge around 4-5 years back, and some of those he repeated. He also gained about 2 stone in weight

Well, this is the last can in the house - boo! The good news is that I've found a bottle of St Austell's 'Proper Job' at the back of a cupboard, that's now chilling in the fridge - hooray!

If my beer shop has it in stock I'll always get myself a couple of cans of NR's Passing Piranhas, I love the stuff.

Spur was nice, but if I’m honest, not all that remarkable. Don’t let that out you off trying it though. PBC make great beers as you say.

I think you’ll struggle to find that Festa Nuda outside Italy, but you never know. White Hag have some new ones due any day now though, usually available via Honest Brew if you don’t want to buy direct.

I’d love to try that Wylam, keep missing it! I’ve two or three banging dark beers in the cellar, including a 10.5% Left-Handed Giant vs Verdant collab and a 15% Goose Island Bourbon County... both of those will wait a while!

Not had any NR for a while, but that sounds like one I’d enjoy.

Thank the beer gods for home delivery!

My local beer shop had everything that I looked up on their online menu that I liked the sound of in stock They're a little short on the normal range, I think that they've taken a hammering over the last few days with the good weather and it being Easter weekend. Very happy for them, it's good to see that they're maintaining decent sales without the takeout and sit-in trade they had prior to lockdown.

    https://myhopsters.com/chelmsford-beer-menu

So, what do we have here, then?

Burnt Mill's barrel aged 'After Earth' Imperial Stout
    Amundsen Brewery's 'Weapon X' NEIPA
Burnt Mill's 'Great Bitter Lake' WC DIPA
Burnt Mill's 'Gardens of Green' series Idaho & Wia-Iti duel hop IPA and a DIPA
Left Handed Giant Brewery's 'King of the Woodland' Imperial Stout (12.5%, I think I'll wait until the weekend for this one!)
Totally Brewed's 'Why So Cereal' Imperial Cereal Stout

    Hmmm... beer...

I think the most I've spent on a single 440ml can was about £13 It was absolutely worth it though, honest!

For some perspective I wouldn't say that I'm a big drinker even though I'm one of the more regular posters on this thread. I might have only the one or two cans a week and I'll only do so if I'm in the mood for it, for me each drink is to be enjoyed and not gulped so a single can is enough for an evening. There's also no difference between, for example, a £7 beer or a fine wine or spirit, in my opinion - sure, you can get some lovely examples at more reasonable prices however sometimes it's worth the extra for the next level of quality. It's also a rabbit hole of styles and it's fun picking out favourites within each theme, be it a stout, sour, IPA, DIPA, NEIPA etc etc.

I'm not much of a drinker at home, but in this last month of lockdown I have sampled most of the William Brothers stuff stocked at Aldi, and some Brewdog gear from Asda and (of all places) B&M bargains!

The William Brothers is totally new to me, but after a glance at their website there are quite a few on my list. The "Rubus" grapefruit infused IPA they do is bloody lovely.

I've probably overdone it a bit, two or three cans most nights. I'm having this week off then I might just stick to weekends after that.

The cost is related to the inputs. Producing a very heavily hopped beer with adjuncts pushes the cost up, and of course they’re producing less of each batch, so all that’s reflected in the cost of the end product.

+1 to what Cardshark says above too.

That said, you can get some pretty fantastic beers in most styles for >£4 a can of you know where to look, with many supermarkets stocking some fantastic stuff at £2-3 a can.

I've seen some canned stouts and porters that I'm sure I'd like in Tesco, but there's no way I'll pay £3 or more for a 330/440ml can when I can buy Hobgoblin for £1.25, or Black Sheep Stout / Old Peculier / King Goblin etc etc for £6 for 4x500ml bottles. I've got half a dozen Mud City stouts in for £1 for a 500ml bottle from Home Bargains. Speaking of which after a thirst inducing 7 mile walk I'm having another HB purchase I found lurking at the back of my stash, £1 for 660ml!

I’m a Verdant investor, can’t wait for the new brewery to really get going. Neal Gets Things Done is my fave.

    Just direct from their website

I wss a regular at their old site, once a month dropping down to the portacabin for some beers, I'm only 90 mins away

Love Allen , Howl as was . This batch of Gis though is sensational.
