Organic Porter apparently. Sounds like the title of a '70s Genesis album!

A well know beer that seems to have passed me by. First time drinking it (that I can remember anyway). Not bad at all.

OK I couldn’t wait until midweek! This is also nice, not as nice as the 5.5% version, but nice enough...

Haven't tried this yet, but had to bring one back from Home Bargains at 99p for a 660ml bottle. Back for more if it's ok.

My quest for the perfect pint of Guinness (at home) has led me down this road.

That looks epic! I don't suppose getting a decent pint of Guinness is easy at all.

    Building it wasn't really difficult.

Getting the gas pressure and the flow set properly was more involving, but a friend owns a bar and he was able to give me some pointers.

Well worth the hassle if you like a pint of Guinness though.

The only down side is, I have three mates hassling me to build one for them!!

^^ If you search for 'keezer build' on YouTube, plenty have done it.

    But a basic run down..

    For this build I needed
Chest freezer big enough to fit a keg into (40x40cm absolute minimum)
    Keg (obviously)
    Temperature controller ( like this https://bit.ly/2CcnifB )
Gas for the beer (Guinness uses a 30/70 Co2/N mix)
Gas regulator (uprated one for the mixed gas in Guinness, standard one for CO2 beer)
    Keg coupler for the keg
Beer line, faucet (stout faucet for Guinness), shank (threaded thing to attach the faucet on the outer frame and beer line on the inner frame) and some push fittings

You just screw off the lid and fit a wooden 'spacer' which then doubles as somewhere to mount your faucet/tap

I ended up using 2x4 on their edge and doubled, dowelled and glued together.

Just to make it look a bit better, I filled the joint with filler and sprayed it black.

Then glue the frame to the freezer.

To make it more airtight, I got some insulating strip from Homebase and stapled it to the top of the black frame. Then refitted the lid.

As its a freezer, you need a temperature controller to keep the temperature correct, and to stop the beer from freezing.

So a hole drilled in the rear of the frame allows it into the freezer, and I've discovered the probe is more accurate in water on top of the keg (see photo)

Then another hole in the rear for your gas inlet, and a hole in the front for the shank/faucet assembly.

I got a flow control faucet as Guinness is fussy as regards the speed it flows into the glass at and it's easier than messing around with beer line restrictors etc

Hook it all up, gas on, leave for 24-24 hours to chill and away you go.

(I added an on/off tap into the beer line just in case I wanted to remove the faucet to clean it etc)

One thing I would do differently is buy a slightly bigger freezer (the keg is a very neat fit) and avoid a freezer with the controls on the lid, as you'll end up having to lengthen the cable going to the buttons, after you fit the spacer.

It was tasty, quite smokey oddly enough (and not in a bad way). If I could find it local to me, I'd have it again.

A quality drink for catarse! A new Lidl opened this week @ ¾ of a mile away from me, so no need for a 6 mile round trip across town now for their ales and breads. Today I defaulted to my regular haunt . . .

Not sure where you are staying, Alan (given Whitman’s have a few sites), but a couple of tips if you’re into your beers and want to try a few different styles and breweries.

Ginger Man and Blind Tigers are pubs and have lots of taps and alway a great selection of draft and bottled beers from across the US. Top Hope is a bar and bottleshop. I always visit when I’m in the city as they have hundreds of beers from across the US, and many from NY’s smaller less well known breweries. Super helpful and friendly staff who’ll make suggestions if the selection’s too bewildering! Stick a few tins in your luggage home

Thanks for that we're staying near Penn station so The Ginger Man fits well. Today we went to Katzs deli and had a couple of pints of Brooklyn lager (with a modest sandwich!!)

Is there such a thing as a bad stout or porter? I've yet to try one.

Forgot to mention, re my recent report of selection/choice in Fenwicks beer department. All is good now, they must have just put the new shelves in and been stocking them. An even bigger selection now, four of the Sam Smith's porters/stouts now, rucksack required for next visit!
